  • Bobby Schuller: Good morning and welcome.
  • 00:00:09.220 --> 00:00:11.020
  • Thanks for joining us today.
  • 00:00:11.030 --> 00:00:12.270
  • For all of you who are on television,
  • 00:00:12.280 --> 00:00:14.070
  • we want you to know that we love you and that if you're ever in
  • 00:00:14.080 --> 00:00:17.100
  • this area, we're pretty close to Disneyland.
  • 00:00:17.110 --> 00:00:19.150
  • Come visit our church.
  • 00:00:19.160 --> 00:00:20.250
  • We'd love to meet you here at Shepherd's Grove.
  • 00:00:20.260 --> 00:00:22.240
  • Friends, would you hold your hands out like
  • 00:00:22.250 --> 00:00:24.040
  • this as a sign of receiving?
  • 00:00:24.050 --> 00:00:25.140
  • And we're gonna say this together as we do every week.
  • 00:00:25.150 --> 00:00:28.250
  • "I'm not what I do.
  • 00:00:28.260 --> 00:00:30.270
  • I'm not what I have.
  • 00:00:30.280 --> 00:00:32.240
  • I'm not what people say about me.
  • 00:00:32.250 --> 00:00:35.230
  • I am the beloved of God.
  • 00:00:35.240 --> 00:00:38.100
  • It's who I am.
  • 00:00:38.110 --> 00:00:39.260
  • No one can take it from me.
  • 00:00:39.270 --> 00:00:42.170
  • I don't have to worry.
  • 00:00:42.180 --> 00:00:44.150
  • I don't have to hurry.
  • 00:00:44.160 --> 00:00:46.170
  • I can trust my friend Jesus and share his love with the world."
  • 00:00:46.180 --> 00:00:51.250
  • Thanks. You can be seated.
  • 00:00:51.260 --> 00:00:55.140
  • Today, we're continuing our series on the Ten Commandments.
  • 00:00:55.150 --> 00:01:00.180
  • Anybody like Monopoly?
  • 00:01:00.190 --> 00:01:03.280
  • Yeah, I remember when I was a kid and,
  • 00:01:03.290 --> 00:01:07.260
  • you know, we really got into Monopoly.
  • 00:01:07.270 --> 00:01:09.170
  • I lived in Chatsworth and my next door neighbor Ian and I
  • 00:01:09.180 --> 00:01:13.080
  • would play Monopoly all the time and it was amazing.
  • 00:01:13.090 --> 00:01:16.140
  • And I realized something about Monopoly.
  • 00:01:16.150 --> 00:01:19.030
  • Monopoly brings the worst out of people.
  • 00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:23.060
  • Pretty much every Monopoly game ends in someone flipping a
  • 00:01:23.070 --> 00:01:26.090
  • table, or someone cussin' someone else out,
  • 00:01:26.100 --> 00:01:28.170
  • someone storms out of the room.
  • 00:01:28.180 --> 00:01:32.010
  • Monopoly seems to have an amazing power to bring the worst
  • 00:01:32.020 --> 00:01:35.130
  • out of the best people.
  • 00:01:35.140 --> 00:01:37.150
  • It's like worst than like getting together with,
  • 00:01:37.160 --> 00:01:39.140
  • you know, distant relatives or something.
  • 00:01:39.150 --> 00:01:41.080
  • Monopoly, it's the thing that really drives us
  • 00:01:41.090 --> 00:01:44.160
  • to the dark side.
  • 00:01:44.170 --> 00:01:46.080
  • And I remember when I was a kid, I had been saving up to buy
  • 00:01:46.090 --> 00:01:49.280
  • Legends of Zelda: A Link To The Past,
  • 00:01:49.290 --> 00:01:52.130
  • Super Nintendo.
  • 00:01:52.140 --> 00:01:54.020
  • And I'd gotten so close.
  • 00:01:54.030 --> 00:01:57.030
  • I had about $30.
  • 00:01:57.040 --> 00:01:58.260
  • And I was playing Monopoly with my friend and we were getting so
  • 00:01:58.270 --> 00:02:01.120
  • into it, and my sister and her friend--I was winning,
  • 00:02:01.130 --> 00:02:06.110
  • by the way, and we left to get snacks or something.
  • 00:02:06.120 --> 00:02:08.230
  • And we were briefly gone, mid game.
  • 00:02:08.240 --> 00:02:11.080
  • I can't even tell you, I had a whole Monopoly
  • 00:02:11.090 --> 00:02:13.040
  • on the green ones.
  • 00:02:13.050 --> 00:02:14.290
  • That's good, that's like even better than the blues.
  • 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:17.040
  • Technically blues are more expensive but there's three of
  • 00:02:17.050 --> 00:02:18.160
  • the greens, you do better.
  • 00:02:18.170 --> 00:02:20.130
  • Anyway, I was killing it and my sister just came without even
  • 00:02:20.140 --> 00:02:25.090
  • asking and took our board game, packed it up and took it to
  • 00:02:25.100 --> 00:02:29.040
  • Ian's house next door.
  • 00:02:29.050 --> 00:02:31.250
  • So we freaked out, right?
  • 00:02:31.260 --> 00:02:33.070
  • 'Cause I was winning especially.
  • 00:02:33.080 --> 00:02:34.170
  • He didn't seem to care as much.
  • 00:02:34.180 --> 00:02:36.000
  • But we went over and I was like pounding on the door,
  • 00:02:36.010 --> 00:02:39.190
  • and I was pounding on the glass, "Give us our game back."
  • 00:02:39.200 --> 00:02:41.160
  • And I broke our neighbor's window.
  • 00:02:41.170 --> 00:02:45.230
  • And I had to use that 30 bucks I had been saving up for Zelda to
  • 00:02:45.240 --> 00:02:49.180
  • make up for my Monopoly mistake.
  • 00:02:49.190 --> 00:02:53.100
  • And the reason I start with this, I think there's something
  • 00:02:53.110 --> 00:02:55.010
  • about Monopoly, the board game Monopoly began in the '30s
  • 00:02:55.020 --> 00:02:58.150
  • during The Depression.
  • 00:02:58.160 --> 00:03:00.070
  • And I think one reason it's been so successful is touches a
  • 00:03:00.080 --> 00:03:03.090
  • deep-felt need that all of us have,
  • 00:03:03.100 --> 00:03:05.050
  • a need for money, a need to succeed,
  • 00:03:05.060 --> 00:03:08.100
  • a need to feel like, "I'm doing something with my life."
  • 00:03:08.110 --> 00:03:10.150
  • There's these little plastic houses become so important in
  • 00:03:10.160 --> 00:03:14.210
  • this one-hour time span that we actually become rude to one
  • 00:03:14.220 --> 00:03:18.070
  • another because this board game becomes something
  • 00:03:18.080 --> 00:03:20.160
  • like important to us.
  • 00:03:20.170 --> 00:03:22.240
  • I think within all of us there's this kind of deep
  • 00:03:22.250 --> 00:03:24.120
  • need for money and for things.
  • 00:03:24.130 --> 00:03:27.090
  • There's this great story from John Ortberg I told before where
  • 00:03:27.100 --> 00:03:31.080
  • he talks about playing Monopoly with his grandma.
  • 00:03:31.090 --> 00:03:34.020
  • And he said, "My grandma was so good at Monopoly.
  • 00:03:34.030 --> 00:03:38.100
  • She would always beat me.
  • 00:03:38.110 --> 00:03:39.250
  • She'd destroy me."
  • 00:03:39.260 --> 00:03:41.090
  • And he said, "One summer I started playing Monopoly with my
  • 00:03:41.100 --> 00:03:45.020
  • friend every single day."
  • 00:03:45.030 --> 00:03:47.210
  • And he said, "I learned the game.
  • 00:03:47.220 --> 00:03:50.050
  • I learned the game, that the game is about total acquisition,
  • 00:03:50.060 --> 00:03:54.160
  • that money is how you keep score.
  • 00:03:54.170 --> 00:03:57.050
  • And one day I went back to play my grandma and
  • 00:03:57.060 --> 00:03:59.280
  • I just destroyed her.
  • 00:03:59.290 --> 00:04:02.210
  • I took everything, I took all of her houses, I took
  • 00:04:02.220 --> 00:04:04.290
  • all of her money.
  • 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:07.090
  • And she said, 'Son, now you've learned to play the game.'"
  • 00:04:07.100 --> 00:04:13.070
  • And he said, "When I took that last dollar from her and I was
  • 00:04:13.080 --> 00:04:19.160
  • glorifying in all of my money and all of my stuff,
  • 00:04:19.170 --> 00:04:23.110
  • she said, 'It's time to learn your second lesson.
  • 00:04:23.120 --> 00:04:26.160
  • Now it all goes back in the box.
  • 00:04:26.170 --> 00:04:33.070
  • All that money, all those houses and hotels,
  • 00:04:33.080 --> 00:04:39.170
  • all those deeds, they all go back in the box.'"
  • 00:04:39.180 --> 00:04:45.290
  • And as he was talking, he said, "This is true for our life."
  • 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:49.180
  • When we get to the end, all the material wealth that we valued
  • 00:04:49.190 --> 00:04:56.010
  • so much, that we've accrued over all this time,
  • 00:04:56.020 --> 00:04:59.230
  • it will all go back in the box.
  • 00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:03.130
  • All your bustling portfolios, all your designer clothing,
  • 00:05:03.140 --> 00:05:09.080
  • all your beautiful cars, all your trophies and all your
  • 00:05:09.090 --> 00:05:13.290
  • accomplishments will go back in the box.
  • 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:18.230
  • And at that point, you are gonna think about wealth
  • 00:05:18.240 --> 00:05:22.050
  • and treasure very differently.
  • 00:05:22.060 --> 00:05:27.050
  • Because we think money and treasure will give us
  • 00:05:27.060 --> 00:05:29.190
  • dignity and give us meaning.
  • 00:05:29.200 --> 00:05:32.160
  • But many of us will find ourselves at the end of that
  • 00:05:32.170 --> 00:05:35.130
  • road wishing we didn't waste so much time pursuing things that
  • 00:05:35.140 --> 00:05:41.080
  • didn't matter, but not you, not you.
  • 00:05:41.090 --> 00:05:47.000
  • You will finish well.
  • 00:05:47.010 --> 00:05:48.290
  • You will finish well, and you'll look back on your life and know
  • 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:53.280
  • that even if you accrued wealth, that wasn't the
  • 00:05:53.290 --> 00:05:57.170
  • most important thing, that was the second thing.
  • 00:05:57.180 --> 00:06:00.220
  • That God was first in your life, that your family came before all
  • 00:06:00.230 --> 00:06:05.220
  • that other stuff, and that storing up for yourselves
  • 00:06:05.230 --> 00:06:09.160
  • treasures in heaven was the thing that mattered.
  • 00:06:09.170 --> 00:06:15.110
  • Look, you deserve dignity and if your dignity is rooted in what
  • 00:06:15.120 --> 00:06:18.170
  • you wear, or what you have, or what people say about you,
  • 00:06:18.180 --> 00:06:22.140
  • or even in just your good deeds, you'll lose it.
  • 00:06:22.150 --> 00:06:27.080
  • But if you lose your dignity, and you trust your life to Jesus
  • 00:06:27.090 --> 00:06:30.090
  • Christ, and you make a decision to live for him,
  • 00:06:30.100 --> 00:06:33.270
  • you'll live every day in the dignity of heaven
  • 00:06:33.280 --> 00:06:37.020
  • and that's a very good thing.
  • 00:06:37.030 --> 00:06:39.190
  • Today, we're talking about the second commandment, which, in
  • 00:06:39.200 --> 00:06:42.150
  • the reformed and Jewish traditions, is paired up
  • 00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:45.020
  • with the idolatry commandment which says, "You shall have no
  • 00:06:45.030 --> 00:06:47.280
  • other gods before me."
  • 00:06:47.290 --> 00:06:51.020
  • And C.S. Lewis said it's the commandment to put first
  • 00:06:51.030 --> 00:06:53.150
  • things first and second things second.
  • 00:06:53.160 --> 00:06:58.170
  • Idolatry was a big deal in the ancient world.
  • 00:06:58.180 --> 00:07:01.030
  • Here in the west, we don't see a lot of idolatry.
  • 00:07:01.040 --> 00:07:03.160
  • You have to go to parts of Asia or Africa to really see idols on
  • 00:07:03.170 --> 00:07:07.010
  • a stand, but we still have idolatry today.
  • 00:07:07.020 --> 00:07:10.060
  • In fact, America might be one of the most idolatrous
  • 00:07:10.070 --> 00:07:12.120
  • nations in the world.
  • 00:07:12.130 --> 00:07:14.260
  • And it's poisoning many people's souls, and God
  • 00:07:14.270 --> 00:07:18.040
  • hates it because God loves you.
  • 00:07:18.050 --> 00:07:20.210
  • In the ancient world, I idolatry and pagan worship was a real
  • 00:07:20.220 --> 00:07:25.240
  • problem, even for the Jewish people, for God's people.
  • 00:07:25.250 --> 00:07:28.070
  • It was a constant temptation for them to be like their
  • 00:07:28.080 --> 00:07:31.250
  • contemporaries and put their trust,
  • 00:07:31.260 --> 00:07:35.280
  • and their worth-ship, worth-ship means to put worth into
  • 00:07:35.290 --> 00:07:38.180
  • something, worth-ship in these idols.
  • 00:07:38.190 --> 00:07:43.160
  • And when you look at idols, even the ones that are made today,
  • 00:07:43.170 --> 00:07:47.040
  • they always have like an abominable look
  • 00:07:47.050 --> 00:07:48.140
  • to them, don't they?
  • 00:07:48.150 --> 00:07:49.240
  • They always like have a creepy, bleh,
  • 00:07:49.250 --> 00:07:53.270
  • like a half woman, half scorpion,
  • 00:07:53.280 --> 00:07:56.250
  • super weird stuff like that.
  • 00:07:56.260 --> 00:07:59.210
  • These are real idols where it's like half man,
  • 00:07:59.220 --> 00:08:02.270
  • half animal is very, very common,
  • 00:08:02.280 --> 00:08:05.180
  • half woman, half animal.
  • 00:08:05.190 --> 00:08:08.080
  • And I think that's appropriate because
  • 00:08:08.090 --> 00:08:10.160
  • that's what idolatry does to you.
  • 00:08:10.170 --> 00:08:13.140
  • It doesn't lift you up to the angels and dignify you like the
  • 00:08:13.150 --> 00:08:17.050
  • gospel does, like Jesus does.
  • 00:08:17.060 --> 00:08:20.270
  • It lowers you down like the animals.
  • 00:08:20.280 --> 00:08:23.070
  • When you look at the idol worship and pagan worship of the
  • 00:08:23.080 --> 00:08:25.190
  • old days, it was evil and wicked,
  • 00:08:25.200 --> 00:08:28.270
  • and always degraded the people who believed in it.
  • 00:08:28.280 --> 00:08:32.240
  • Idol worship in the ancient world included things like human
  • 00:08:32.250 --> 00:08:36.190
  • sacrifice, slavery, drugs, prostitution, very often
  • 00:08:36.200 --> 00:08:43.110
  • those prostitutes were children or themselves slaves.
  • 00:08:43.120 --> 00:08:48.000
  • The festivals were engaging in all sorts of terrible things
  • 00:08:48.010 --> 00:08:53.050
  • that degrade the human soul, to make it more like animals
  • 00:08:53.060 --> 00:08:56.220
  • and less like people.
  • 00:08:56.230 --> 00:08:59.030
  • That's what idolatry does, it ruins your soul.
  • 00:08:59.040 --> 00:09:03.240
  • Idolatry is at the heart of the words that say,
  • 00:09:03.250 --> 00:09:07.010
  • "I'm what I do, I'm what I have, I'm what people say about me,
  • 00:09:07.020 --> 00:09:11.060
  • but I'm not truly a child of God, that I am my stuff and
  • 00:09:11.070 --> 00:09:15.200
  • I put my trust and I put my worth-ship there."
  • 00:09:15.210 --> 00:09:20.260
  • It degrades you, but not you, not you.
  • 00:09:20.270 --> 00:09:27.240
  • You think there's idolatry today?
  • 00:09:27.250 --> 00:09:30.120
  • You think it still degrades the soul?
  • 00:09:30.130 --> 00:09:33.070
  • I think it does.
  • 00:09:33.080 --> 00:09:36.000
  • Have you ever felt degraded because
  • 00:09:36.010 --> 00:09:37.100
  • of our society's idolatry?
  • 00:09:37.110 --> 00:09:40.120
  • Have you ever felt like you weren't good enough because you
  • 00:09:40.130 --> 00:09:41.290
  • weren't wearing the latest designer clothing,
  • 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:44.220
  • or you didn't fit because your car wasn't clean,
  • 00:09:44.230 --> 00:09:48.040
  • or maybe you didn't fit because you didn't have the same status
  • 00:09:48.050 --> 00:09:51.100
  • in your college or your workplace that others had.
  • 00:09:51.110 --> 00:09:54.010
  • You hadn't accomplished as much, and because of the idolatry of
  • 00:09:54.020 --> 00:09:57.100
  • our society, you felt less than.
  • 00:09:57.110 --> 00:10:00.100
  • You felt less than human, less than valued.
  • 00:10:00.110 --> 00:10:03.140
  • Maybe that spurned something in you to prove yourself and to
  • 00:10:03.150 --> 00:10:07.020
  • become so thin of soul that you were completely exhausted,
  • 00:10:07.030 --> 00:10:13.180
  • maybe neglected the true things that mattered in your life.
  • 00:10:13.190 --> 00:10:17.270
  • Maybe the idolatry of our world has degraded a lot
  • 00:10:17.280 --> 00:10:20.070
  • of us, but not you, not you.
  • 00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:24.220
  • You know you are not what you have.
  • 00:10:24.230 --> 00:10:29.210
  • You know you are who has you.
  • 00:10:29.220 --> 00:10:34.170
  • You trust in God.
  • 00:10:34.180 --> 00:10:36.080
  • He is your first treasure, and though many of you have wealth
  • 00:10:36.090 --> 00:10:39.260
  • and you've succeeded, you don't need those things.
  • 00:10:39.270 --> 00:10:44.040
  • All you need is God.
  • 00:10:44.050 --> 00:10:45.260
  • You need him with all your heart and you trust in him.
  • 00:10:45.270 --> 00:10:49.200
  • We cannot save ourselves without the help of our loving Father.
  • 00:10:49.210 --> 00:10:56.240
  • When God is first in the society and idols are not,
  • 00:10:56.250 --> 00:11:00.230
  • people are valued.
  • 00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:02.040
  • Let me just clarify this.
  • 00:11:02.050 --> 00:11:04.010
  • Not religion when God is first, because religion
  • 00:11:04.020 --> 00:11:07.090
  • can become an idol.
  • 00:11:07.100 --> 00:11:09.180
  • You know how much I adore and love the Bible.
  • 00:11:09.190 --> 00:11:12.020
  • We should be people of the Bible, but even the Bible
  • 00:11:12.030 --> 00:11:15.010
  • can become an idol.
  • 00:11:15.020 --> 00:11:17.020
  • God must be first, and when God is first in a society,
  • 00:11:17.030 --> 00:11:21.290
  • when people truly honor and worship him,
  • 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:24.250
  • they follow the second commandment of Jesus great
  • 00:11:24.260 --> 00:11:27.150
  • commandments which is to love one another.
  • 00:11:27.160 --> 00:11:30.240
  • Because we experience God's grace and God's forgiveness and
  • 00:11:30.250 --> 00:11:33.190
  • God's mercy, we give it to others.
  • 00:11:33.200 --> 00:11:37.170
  • How can we treat God's children with contempt
  • 00:11:37.180 --> 00:11:39.270
  • if God is first in our lives?
  • 00:11:39.280 --> 00:11:42.100
  • When God becomes first in a society,
  • 00:11:42.110 --> 00:11:44.050
  • people are treated with dignity.
  • 00:11:44.060 --> 00:11:46.270
  • In Orthodox Christianity, and this is where I part from
  • 00:11:46.280 --> 00:11:49.140
  • orthodoxy, God is described as being stoic or the word
  • 00:11:49.150 --> 00:11:53.020
  • theologians like to use is impassable.
  • 00:11:53.030 --> 00:11:55.290
  • It means he doesn't have emotions caused by our actions.
  • 00:11:56.000 --> 00:12:01.000
  • I just don't believe that.
  • 00:12:01.010 --> 00:12:02.140
  • I know God.
  • 00:12:02.150 --> 00:12:04.100
  • He's an emotional guy.
  • 00:12:04.110 --> 00:12:07.110
  • No, I think God is emotional.
  • 00:12:07.120 --> 00:12:09.040
  • God feels--how can you say that God feels wrath and anger,
  • 00:12:09.050 --> 00:12:12.180
  • joy, elation, grace, blessing and still say he's stoic?
  • 00:12:12.190 --> 00:12:18.200
  • He's not.
  • 00:12:18.210 --> 00:12:20.000
  • In fact, God is jealous for you.
  • 00:12:20.010 --> 00:12:24.020
  • Scriptures say he's jealous.
  • 00:12:24.030 --> 00:12:25.280
  • I love that.
  • 00:12:25.290 --> 00:12:28.000
  • There's something about when a boyfriend or a girlfriend feels
  • 00:12:28.010 --> 00:12:31.140
  • jealous towards the other, the other kind
  • 00:12:31.150 --> 00:12:33.080
  • of likes it, you know?
  • 00:12:33.090 --> 00:12:35.180
  • It's not so bad. Why?
  • 00:12:35.190 --> 00:12:37.140
  • 'Cause if they're not jealous, they don't care, right?
  • 00:12:37.150 --> 00:12:40.260
  • God is jealous for you. He cares about you.
  • 00:12:40.270 --> 00:12:43.110
  • I think what God feels towards us whom he's given freewill and
  • 00:12:43.120 --> 00:12:50.080
  • choice, I think God feels the dilemma of the king.
  • 00:12:50.090 --> 00:12:54.270
  • The dilemma of the king is this, how can truly experience love?
  • 00:12:54.280 --> 00:12:59.060
  • All of my friends, most of the people in my life are either
  • 00:12:59.070 --> 00:13:03.010
  • friends with me because they want something from me,
  • 00:13:03.020 --> 00:13:06.250
  • or they're friends with me because they're afraid of me.
  • 00:13:06.260 --> 00:13:10.270
  • And God has both, right?
  • 00:13:10.280 --> 00:13:13.020
  • There are things about God we should fear and there are things
  • 00:13:13.030 --> 00:13:15.260
  • from God that we can get that are really awesome,
  • 00:13:15.270 --> 00:13:19.160
  • but are those the reasons you love God?
  • 00:13:19.170 --> 00:13:24.150
  • That's why when I preach, I try not to say, come to
  • 00:13:24.160 --> 00:13:27.240
  • God so you can go to heaven or come to God
  • 00:13:27.250 --> 00:13:30.040
  • so you don't go to hell.
  • 00:13:30.050 --> 00:13:32.130
  • I don't think those are good enough reasons to know God.
  • 00:13:32.140 --> 00:13:35.210
  • The best reason to know God is that God is so worth knowing.
  • 00:13:35.220 --> 00:13:42.160
  • God is so full of an overflowing with love,
  • 00:13:42.170 --> 00:13:51.050
  • and beauty, and joy.
  • 00:13:51.060 --> 00:13:52.230
  • God is the most joy-filled being in the universe.
  • 00:13:52.240 --> 00:13:56.190
  • There's nothing worth more than knowing him.
  • 00:13:56.200 --> 00:14:02.140
  • That is heaven right now.
  • 00:14:02.150 --> 00:14:06.070
  • So, many of us, our theology is the theology of the gold digger.
  • 00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:11.130
  • "I'm with God so he can give me stuff and when
  • 00:14:11.140 --> 00:14:13.090
  • the money runs out, she gone."
  • 00:14:13.100 --> 00:14:19.090
  • Some of us, we feel like it's an arranged marriage.
  • 00:14:19.100 --> 00:14:22.130
  • Maybe you grew up in a church or like me,
  • 00:14:22.140 --> 00:14:24.100
  • your dad was a pastor, or you feel like,
  • 00:14:24.110 --> 00:14:27.050
  • "I'm just stuck in this thing."
  • 00:14:27.060 --> 00:14:28.150
  • But let me tell ya, some arranged marriages are some of
  • 00:14:28.160 --> 00:14:30.090
  • the best marriages in the world.
  • 00:14:30.100 --> 00:14:33.090
  • Maybe you're doing it 'cause you just don't want to go to hell
  • 00:14:33.100 --> 00:14:37.040
  • and you're just so afraid of God's wrath and punishment
  • 00:14:37.050 --> 00:14:41.000
  • that you just, you know, you stay in line.
  • 00:14:41.010 --> 00:14:44.150
  • I don't think God wants any of these things.
  • 00:14:44.160 --> 00:14:47.240
  • I think he wants all of us or none of us.
  • 00:14:47.250 --> 00:14:49.130
  • He wants your heart. He wants to know you.
  • 00:14:49.140 --> 00:14:51.270
  • He wants to be a friend with you.
  • 00:14:51.280 --> 00:14:54.140
  • And the dilemma of the king is this,
  • 00:14:54.150 --> 00:14:56.000
  • you know, do they really love me,
  • 00:14:56.010 --> 00:14:59.160
  • or do they just want something from me,
  • 00:14:59.170 --> 00:15:01.080
  • or are they afraid of me?
  • 00:15:01.090 --> 00:15:03.090
  • God wants to know you.
  • 00:15:03.100 --> 00:15:08.220
  • God wants the man or the woman who says,
  • 00:15:08.230 --> 00:15:12.010
  • "Take my food, take my house, take my clothes,
  • 00:15:12.020 --> 00:15:17.110
  • take my very body, but give me God."
  • 00:15:17.120 --> 00:15:21.220
  • God wants the man or the woman who says,
  • 00:15:21.230 --> 00:15:23.240
  • "Of all things, the only thing I can truly trust is God,
  • 00:15:23.250 --> 00:15:28.240
  • his faithfulness to me."
  • 00:15:28.250 --> 00:15:33.090
  • God is so faithful and I believe,
  • 00:15:33.100 --> 00:15:36.270
  • ironically, that the person who has that heart will be more
  • 00:15:36.280 --> 00:15:41.120
  • blessed in this life.
  • 00:15:41.130 --> 00:15:43.090
  • The person that says, "I don't care about all those things in
  • 00:15:43.100 --> 00:15:47.100
  • comparison to knowing Christ," the person who says that with
  • 00:15:47.110 --> 00:15:51.000
  • all their heart very often is financially blessed,
  • 00:15:51.010 --> 00:15:55.070
  • is blessed in their relationships.
  • 00:15:55.080 --> 00:15:57.070
  • And I know a lot of people crossed the line with this type
  • 00:15:57.080 --> 00:16:00.190
  • of thing, but I actually believe when we put first things first
  • 00:16:00.200 --> 00:16:05.060
  • and second things second, things go better in life.
  • 00:16:05.070 --> 00:16:08.130
  • I just believe that.
  • 00:16:08.140 --> 00:16:10.010
  • I remember when a friend of mine, Don Trotter, who is
  • 00:16:10.020 --> 00:16:13.280
  • a Baptist and he had an insurance business that was
  • 00:16:13.290 --> 00:16:17.260
  • really struggling, struggling to put food on the table.
  • 00:16:17.270 --> 00:16:21.190
  • And he decided he was gonna set aside some of his money to reach
  • 00:16:21.200 --> 00:16:24.090
  • the teenagers in a little high school called Coweta.
  • 00:16:24.100 --> 00:16:27.080
  • He was gonna try and reach them for Christ and help them and
  • 00:16:27.090 --> 00:16:30.070
  • encourage them because high school's hard, it really is.
  • 00:16:30.080 --> 00:16:33.080
  • It's harder today than it's ever been, by the way.
  • 00:16:33.090 --> 00:16:35.060
  • Have grace for high school and junior high students.
  • 00:16:35.070 --> 00:16:37.260
  • It's really hard.
  • 00:16:37.270 --> 00:16:39.260
  • And he decided to be there for them.
  • 00:16:39.270 --> 00:16:42.020
  • And so, he opened his house and he started spending.
  • 00:16:42.030 --> 00:16:44.130
  • It was really a big sacrifice for him.
  • 00:16:44.140 --> 00:16:46.020
  • He started spending money on like, he got like a, little like
  • 00:16:46.030 --> 00:16:49.080
  • elevated pool, and like a slide, and all sorts of,
  • 00:16:49.090 --> 00:16:53.160
  • you know, like a guitar and things like that.
  • 00:16:53.170 --> 00:16:55.280
  • And he started having little pizza gatherings at his house.
  • 00:16:55.290 --> 00:16:59.070
  • And he said, "The more money I spent on helping these
  • 00:16:59.080 --> 00:17:01.270
  • teenagers, the better my business did."
  • 00:17:01.280 --> 00:17:05.070
  • And I think I want to be careful here because sometimes you try
  • 00:17:05.080 --> 00:17:09.190
  • and make formulas out of this, but I think when you put God
  • 00:17:09.200 --> 00:17:11.220
  • first, when you use your resources to help people,
  • 00:17:11.230 --> 00:17:17.040
  • I think that the old cliche, "You can't out-give
  • 00:17:17.050 --> 00:17:19.130
  • God," is just absolutely true.
  • 00:17:19.140 --> 00:17:23.100
  • When you treasure God, when you put God first,
  • 00:17:23.110 --> 00:17:26.200
  • God will put your first.
  • 00:17:26.210 --> 00:17:28.100
  • When you put God second, God will put you second.
  • 00:17:28.110 --> 00:17:30.170
  • And when you put God last, he'll put you last.
  • 00:17:30.180 --> 00:17:33.050
  • Jesus said, "Anyone who acknowledges me before men,
  • 00:17:33.060 --> 00:17:36.060
  • I'll acknowledge before the Father.
  • 00:17:36.070 --> 00:17:37.180
  • But anybody who denies me before men,
  • 00:17:37.190 --> 00:17:39.030
  • I'll deny before the Father."
  • 00:17:39.040 --> 00:17:42.120
  • If you put God first, God will put you first
  • 00:17:42.130 --> 00:17:44.120
  • and that is a promise.
  • 00:17:44.130 --> 00:17:46.040
  • I remember Pastor Russ told me a story,
  • 00:17:46.050 --> 00:17:48.030
  • when he first got into ministry, came from the business world and
  • 00:17:48.040 --> 00:17:55.090
  • went to Fuller where I met him in seminary,
  • 00:17:55.100 --> 00:17:57.140
  • and started doing this chaplain work with the sick and dying.
  • 00:17:57.150 --> 00:18:04.080
  • And he was doing it in a place in Irvine where most of the
  • 00:18:04.090 --> 00:18:08.030
  • people that were there were extremely affluent
  • 00:18:08.040 --> 00:18:10.150
  • and extremely wealthy.
  • 00:18:10.160 --> 00:18:13.060
  • And he said, "All of these people who had all of this
  • 00:18:13.070 --> 00:18:16.100
  • stuff, had all of these amazing houses,
  • 00:18:16.110 --> 00:18:19.220
  • amazing portfolios, incredible accomplishments in academia
  • 00:18:19.230 --> 00:18:25.250
  • and in society, their life would be reduced to a little box,
  • 00:18:25.260 --> 00:18:30.180
  • a little room where they were staring at the ceiling and all
  • 00:18:30.190 --> 00:18:34.170
  • they had was me, this chaplain.
  • 00:18:34.180 --> 00:18:37.130
  • And many of them would say stuff like,
  • 00:18:37.140 --> 00:18:39.170
  • 'I wish I'd spent more time with my family.'"
  • 00:18:39.180 --> 00:18:43.160
  • To me, it sounded like a room full of regrets.
  • 00:18:43.170 --> 00:18:47.230
  • That's not gonna be you.
  • 00:18:47.240 --> 00:18:49.280
  • That's a promise.
  • 00:18:49.290 --> 00:18:51.100
  • That will not be you because God has given you knowledge,
  • 00:18:51.110 --> 00:18:56.000
  • that to put those things first in your life is folly and that
  • 00:18:56.010 --> 00:19:00.200
  • wisdom is to seek God and his kingdom and to love your
  • 00:19:00.210 --> 00:19:05.110
  • neighbor as yourself, that that is the heart of wisdom.
  • 00:19:05.120 --> 00:19:13.090
  • So, I think, I know this might sound cheesy,
  • 00:19:13.100 --> 00:19:15.230
  • but I think if Jesus preaching the Sermon on the Mount today
  • 00:19:15.240 --> 00:19:19.140
  • instead of say, "Stores treasures in heaven," he might
  • 00:19:19.150 --> 00:19:21.090
  • say, "Build up for yourself a spiritual portfolio.
  • 00:19:21.100 --> 00:19:26.030
  • Build up for yourselves a portfolio of things that even
  • 00:19:26.040 --> 00:19:30.100
  • if all of your material wealth is taken away,
  • 00:19:30.110 --> 00:19:33.000
  • that you have this thing here."
  • 00:19:33.010 --> 00:19:36.200
  • What is that?
  • 00:19:36.210 --> 00:19:38.290
  • Well, I think favor with God and man.
  • 00:19:39.000 --> 00:19:41.040
  • I think there is lots of things that are heavenly treasures, but
  • 00:19:41.050 --> 00:19:44.130
  • I think wisdom is one of them.
  • 00:19:44.140 --> 00:19:47.010
  • I think if you seek wisdom, that treasure
  • 00:19:47.020 --> 00:19:48.280
  • will follow, and it will come and go.
  • 00:19:48.290 --> 00:19:51.040
  • I really do believe that.
  • 00:19:51.050 --> 00:19:52.190
  • In fact, the Scriptures teach that.
  • 00:19:52.200 --> 00:19:54.030
  • Let me ask you a question, would you rather receive a million
  • 00:19:54.040 --> 00:20:00.000
  • dollars or the knowledge of how to make a million dollars?
  • 00:20:00.010 --> 00:20:06.180
  • Think about that for a minute.
  • 00:20:06.190 --> 00:20:10.070
  • You're such a liar. You're such a liar.
  • 00:20:10.080 --> 00:20:18.010
  • So someone's holding a check for a million dollars or like
  • 00:20:18.020 --> 00:20:22.290
  • the matrix thing where they can plug it into your brain and
  • 00:20:23.000 --> 00:20:26.020
  • teach you how to make a million dollars?
  • 00:20:26.030 --> 00:20:29.160
  • That's too cool, actually.
  • 00:20:29.170 --> 00:20:32.040
  • The coolness of that would make me want to pick that so we need
  • 00:20:32.050 --> 00:20:34.220
  • to do something else.
  • 00:20:34.230 --> 00:20:36.190
  • Someone's offering you a million dollars or the knowledge to make
  • 00:20:36.200 --> 00:20:39.210
  • a million dollar, what do you honestly choose?
  • 00:20:39.220 --> 00:20:44.070
  • Three percent of you in real life would actually choose the
  • 00:20:44.080 --> 00:20:47.100
  • knowledge, even though all of us probably know,
  • 00:20:47.110 --> 00:20:50.230
  • "Well, choosing the knowledge is the best one but I can still
  • 00:20:50.240 --> 00:20:54.040
  • learn and have a million dollars."
  • 00:20:54.050 --> 00:21:00.020
  • Every study shows that most people who win the lottery end
  • 00:21:00.030 --> 00:21:04.190
  • up worst than before they won because they don't have the
  • 00:21:04.200 --> 00:21:07.280
  • knowledge that went with earning that money.
  • 00:21:07.290 --> 00:21:12.090
  • In the rare case when people do fine,
  • 00:21:12.100 --> 00:21:14.170
  • it's usually they were already doing well financially.
  • 00:21:14.180 --> 00:21:17.200
  • They knew how to make money.
  • 00:21:17.210 --> 00:21:20.020
  • If you have the--let me tell you something,
  • 00:21:20.030 --> 00:21:21.200
  • anything can take away your money.
  • 00:21:21.210 --> 00:21:23.080
  • One lawsuit, one health problem, any of those things,
  • 00:21:23.090 --> 00:21:27.190
  • one policy from government can take away all your material
  • 00:21:27.200 --> 00:21:31.140
  • wealth no matter how smart you are.
  • 00:21:31.150 --> 00:21:35.040
  • I think these are what it truly means to have heavenly treasure,
  • 00:21:35.050 --> 00:21:39.270
  • that you store up for yourself a life that, when you're finished,
  • 00:21:39.280 --> 00:21:45.110
  • and this life is so fast, that you look back and you say,
  • 00:21:45.120 --> 00:21:50.150
  • "I wasn't perfect, but I sure did store up for
  • 00:21:50.160 --> 00:21:53.200
  • myself the right kind of stuff.
  • 00:21:53.210 --> 00:21:57.020
  • I didn't put my trust in all those other things."
  • 00:21:57.030 --> 00:22:00.120
  • And maybe you have those things but you use those things to
  • 00:22:00.130 --> 00:22:02.150
  • bless others, to live a full life.
  • 00:22:02.160 --> 00:22:05.280
  • In the end, money, power, status,
  • 00:22:05.290 --> 00:22:11.240
  • they will not matter and you'll wish if that was you,
  • 00:22:11.250 --> 00:22:18.230
  • that you could go back and start all over.
  • 00:22:18.240 --> 00:22:22.020
  • Don't wait until that moment.
  • 00:22:22.030 --> 00:22:26.140
  • Don't wait to get to the end and say,
  • 00:22:26.150 --> 00:22:27.270
  • "I wish I would have spent more time with my kids.
  • 00:22:27.280 --> 00:22:30.140
  • I wish I would have spent more time praying.
  • 00:22:30.150 --> 00:22:32.170
  • I wish I would have spent more time worshiping,
  • 00:22:32.180 --> 00:22:35.090
  • resting, and living."
  • 00:22:35.100 --> 00:22:40.070
  • And it's not too late no matter how old you are
  • 00:22:40.080 --> 00:22:42.010
  • or how sick you are.
  • 00:22:42.020 --> 00:22:43.280
  • This Word is for you.
  • 00:22:43.290 --> 00:22:46.000
  • God is proud of you.
  • 00:22:46.010 --> 00:22:47.270
  • Do not fall into the temptation of putting
  • 00:22:47.280 --> 00:22:50.140
  • your trust in material gain.
  • 00:22:50.150 --> 00:22:54.070
  • How far must we go down that road to see where
  • 00:22:54.080 --> 00:22:58.070
  • it truly leads?
  • 00:22:58.080 --> 00:23:02.180
  • Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven because
  • 00:23:02.190 --> 00:23:05.250
  • there are some things that don't go back in the box.
  • 00:23:05.260 --> 00:23:13.250
  • There are some things that, if you attain them in this life,
  • 00:23:13.260 --> 00:23:19.040
  • you will never lose them and that's a promise.
  • 00:23:19.050 --> 00:23:24.160
  • Let's pray.
  • 00:23:24.170 --> 00:23:28.030
  • Father, we love you and we thank you that you have made available
  • 00:23:28.040 --> 00:23:32.040
  • to us all of the goodness, life, and wonder that is in heaven.
  • 00:23:32.050 --> 00:23:40.010
  • You have opened up the heavens to us and you say,
  • 00:23:40.020 --> 00:23:43.180
  • "My son, my daughter, whom I love, receive this gift."
  • 00:23:43.190 --> 00:23:50.030
  • If you're here today and you need to make a decision to
  • 00:23:50.040 --> 00:23:54.200
  • follow Christ and to put him first in your life,
  • 00:23:54.210 --> 00:23:58.200
  • I want you to repeat this prayer after me.
  • 00:23:58.210 --> 00:24:01.000
  • "Father in heaven, I reject idols.
  • 00:24:01.010 --> 00:24:07.210
  • I trust in God.
  • 00:24:07.220 --> 00:24:11.010
  • I put my faith in Jesus Christ and in his good work for me.
  • 00:24:11.020 --> 00:24:18.280
  • Forgive me of my sin.
  • 00:24:18.290 --> 00:24:21.200
  • Fill me with your Holy Spirit.
  • 00:24:21.210 --> 00:24:25.000
  • Teach me your ways.
  • 00:24:25.010 --> 00:24:27.270
  • Mark my name in the Lamb's Book of Life.
  • 00:24:27.280 --> 00:24:32.130
  • In Christ's name I pray, amen."
  • 00:24:32.140 --> 00:24:35.290
  • Hannah Schuller: Here's another life the Lord is touching
  • 00:24:38.210 --> 00:24:40.150
  • because of your generosity.
  • 00:24:40.160 --> 00:24:42.220
  • Steven: "Dear Pastor Bobby, I'm currently incarcerated for
  • 00:24:42.230 --> 00:24:44.280
  • theft, but I may not be a typical convict.
  • 00:24:44.290 --> 00:24:48.050
  • Like you, I was a full-time minister for 25 years.
  • 00:24:48.060 --> 00:24:51.040
  • After a painful experience at a church where I served for many
  • 00:24:51.050 --> 00:24:54.010
  • years, I was left with a deep wound and later attempted to
  • 00:24:54.020 --> 00:24:57.080
  • take my own life.
  • 00:24:57.090 --> 00:24:59.040
  • My life spiraled downward and I began gambling and stealing,
  • 00:24:59.050 --> 00:25:02.140
  • which led to where I am now.
  • 00:25:02.150 --> 00:25:04.120
  • But now my pride and my life has been broken to pieces.
  • 00:25:04.130 --> 00:25:07.130
  • I tell you this to say how much I need 'Hour
  • 00:25:07.140 --> 00:25:09.120
  • of Power' each week.
  • 00:25:09.130 --> 00:25:11.000
  • Thanks to your messages, God is putting me back together.
  • 00:25:11.010 --> 00:25:13.270
  • This week you said, 'This is your life story and you
  • 00:25:13.280 --> 00:25:16.080
  • haven't read the ending yet.'
  • 00:25:16.090 --> 00:25:17.240
  • Though I have lots of guilt and need to
  • 00:25:17.250 --> 00:25:19.060
  • forgive myself, I know God's love is irrevocable
  • 00:25:19.070 --> 00:25:22.040
  • and he can still use me.
  • 00:25:22.050 --> 00:25:23.240
  • Thanks for helping me on this journey.
  • 00:25:23.250 --> 00:25:25.200
  • You are God's vessel to me each week.
  • 00:25:25.210 --> 00:25:28.120
  • He uses you in a powerful way, so thank you.
  • 00:25:28.130 --> 00:25:31.140
  • Sincerely, Steven."
  • 00:25:31.150 --> 00:25:35.070
  • Hannah: Steven, the hardest thing about your story is from
  • 00:25:35.080 --> 00:25:37.140
  • the saying that we only receive the amount of
  • 00:25:37.150 --> 00:25:39.280
  • love we think we deserve.
  • 00:25:39.290 --> 00:25:41.270
  • And if you are anything like me, it is so easy to feel riddled
  • 00:25:41.280 --> 00:25:45.240
  • with guilt and shame.
  • 00:25:45.250 --> 00:25:48.110
  • But the Lord has made you worthy,
  • 00:25:48.120 --> 00:25:50.270
  • Steven, of the most profound love known to human kind right
  • 00:25:50.280 --> 00:25:55.140
  • now where you are in your jail cell.
  • 00:25:55.150 --> 00:25:57.190
  • And gambling and theft addiction,
  • 00:25:57.200 --> 00:26:00.060
  • that is not your story.
  • 00:26:00.070 --> 00:26:02.050
  • That may be one chapter of your story,
  • 00:26:02.060 --> 00:26:04.100
  • but the Lord is calling you to dream big and to create a story
  • 00:26:04.110 --> 00:26:08.040
  • that changes souls.
  • 00:26:08.050 --> 00:26:10.040
  • Bobby: That's right, Steven, we're behind you 100%.
  • 00:26:10.050 --> 00:26:12.070
  • I can't wait to see how God works in your life.
  • 00:26:12.080 --> 00:26:14.100
  • Everybody else that's watching, you know,
  • 00:26:14.110 --> 00:26:16.120
  • that's just one of thousands of stories of people that have been
  • 00:26:16.130 --> 00:26:18.220
  • touched because of your generosity.
  • 00:26:18.230 --> 00:26:20.130
  • Summer is a tough time for charities,
  • 00:26:20.140 --> 00:26:22.270
  • a lot of times they see a big dip.
  • 00:26:22.280 --> 00:26:24.070
  • We saw that, and so we need your support now more than ever so we
  • 00:26:24.080 --> 00:26:27.150
  • continue to help people like Steven.
  • 00:26:27.160 --> 00:26:29.160
  • male announcer: This week, when you donate to our ministry,
  • 00:26:30.020 --> 00:26:32.160
  • we want to say a small thank you so when you give a gift of $30
  • 00:26:32.170 --> 00:26:36.230
  • or more, we'll send you this "Hour of Power"
  • 00:26:36.240 --> 00:26:39.220
  • "beloved" tote bag.
  • 00:26:39.230 --> 00:26:42.010
  • Let it be a daily reminder that you are beloved just as you are.
  • 00:26:42.020 --> 00:26:46.130
  • Your support is changing lives, so thank you for being a part
