  • Looking for a ray of light, looking for something
  • 00:00:09.290 --> 00:00:14.080
  • better than this.
  • 00:00:14.090 --> 00:00:21.080
  • Oh, so tired of the black and white,
  • 00:00:21.090 --> 00:00:24.180
  • longing for prism light,
  • 00:00:24.190 --> 00:00:28.220
  • oh the bliss.
  • 00:00:28.230 --> 00:00:33.080
  • Forward at the speed of life,
  • 00:00:33.090 --> 00:00:35.240
  • choose the color and the life.
  • 00:00:35.250 --> 00:00:39.070
  • Moving at the speed of life,

  • choose the color and the life.
  • 00:00:41.240 --> 00:00:44.130
  • Joy unspeakable and full of colors,
  • 00:00:44.140 --> 00:00:50.020
  • found a hope so bright and clear.
  • 00:00:50.030 --> 00:00:55.280
  • Living in the realm of grace so vivid.
  • 00:00:55.290 --> 00:01:01.260
  • The Savior's radiance so very near to me.
  • 00:01:01.270 --> 00:01:07.200
  • male announcer: Walking in humility isn't always easy,
  • 00:01:11.120 --> 00:01:13.180
  • but it's always full of hope.
  • 00:01:13.190 --> 00:01:15.050
  • Today on "Connect with Skip Heitzig," Skip looks at the
  • 00:01:15.060 --> 00:01:17.260
  • example of Christ to show you how humility led him
  • 00:01:17.270 --> 00:01:20.250
  • to the cross, which leads to your eternal hope.
  • 00:01:20.260 --> 00:01:23.210
  • Skip Heitzig: So there was five guys on an airplane,
  • 00:01:29.080 --> 00:01:31.050
  • a small little aircraft.
  • 00:01:31.060 --> 00:01:32.150
  • There was a boy and there was a preacher.
  • 00:01:32.160 --> 00:01:35.050
  • There was a doctor, a lawyer, and the pilot.
  • 00:01:35.060 --> 00:01:41.130
  • So they're flying this little private airplane,
  • 00:01:41.140 --> 00:01:43.180
  • and midway in the flight some problems happen.
  • 00:01:43.190 --> 00:01:48.160
  • So the pilot shouts back, "Mayday, mayday,
  • 00:01:48.170 --> 00:01:50.240
  • this plane's going down.
  • 00:01:50.250 --> 00:01:52.240
  • As you can tell, there's five passengers aboard,
  • 00:01:52.250 --> 00:01:55.020
  • but we only have four parachutes.
  • 00:01:55.030 --> 00:01:58.010
  • And so you guys decide who's staying, but I'm out of here."
  • 00:01:58.020 --> 00:02:00.100
  • And the pilot jumps out with a parachute.
  • 00:02:00.110 --> 00:02:04.080
  • So the doctor immediately says, "Well, I've saved so many lives
  • 00:02:04.090 --> 00:02:09.000
  • in my lifetime I deserve to live."
  • 00:02:09.010 --> 00:02:12.280
  • So he grabbed a parachute and the doctor jumped out.
  • 00:02:12.290 --> 00:02:16.280
  • Then the lawyer said, "Well, I'm the smartest guy
  • 00:02:16.290 --> 00:02:19.020
  • in the world so I deserve one."
  • 00:02:19.030 --> 00:02:22.020
  • He grabbed a pack and jumped out.
  • 00:02:22.030 --> 00:02:26.040
  • So now there's two people left and one parachute.
  • 00:02:26.050 --> 00:02:28.170
  • There's the preacher and there's the little boy.
  • 00:02:28.180 --> 00:02:33.120
  • So the preacher says to the little boy,
  • 00:02:33.130 --> 00:02:34.270
  • "Look, you have your whole life ahead of you.
  • 00:02:34.280 --> 00:02:37.180
  • Me, I've lived a good long life and when I die
  • 00:02:37.190 --> 00:02:41.170
  • I know I'm going to heaven.
  • 00:02:41.180 --> 00:02:43.060
  • So you take the last parachute and you jump."
  • 00:02:43.070 --> 00:02:47.030
  • And the little boy smiles, said, "Relax, reverend.
  • 00:02:47.040 --> 00:02:50.080
  • The smartest guy in the world just jumped out of the airplane
  • 00:02:50.090 --> 00:02:53.130
  • with my backpack."
  • 00:02:53.140 --> 00:03:00.050
  • What's the moral of that story?
  • 00:03:00.060 --> 00:03:03.100
  • The moral of that story is Proverbs chapter 16,
  • 00:03:03.110 --> 00:03:06.150
  • which says, "Pride goes before destruction,
  • 00:03:06.160 --> 00:03:09.140
  • and a haughty spirit before a fall."
  • 00:03:09.150 --> 00:03:13.010
  • Be humble or you'll stumble.
  • 00:03:13.020 --> 00:03:15.240
  • Be humble or you'll stumble.
  • 00:03:15.250 --> 00:03:17.050
  • Be meek or you'll get mashed.
  • 00:03:17.060 --> 00:03:20.270
  • Be selfless or you'll get squished.
  • 00:03:20.280 --> 00:03:24.180
  • That's the moral of that story.
  • 00:03:24.190 --> 00:03:27.260
  • Pride is the oldest sin in the universe and it shows no signs
  • 00:03:27.270 --> 00:03:33.130
  • of growing weaker with age.
  • 00:03:33.140 --> 00:03:36.190
  • Been around a long time and it's going to be with us
  • 00:03:36.200 --> 00:03:39.280
  • for some time.
  • 00:03:39.290 --> 00:03:42.050
  • C.S. Lewis said, "Pride is the chief cause
  • 00:03:42.060 --> 00:03:45.270
  • of misery in every nation and family since the world began."
  • 00:03:45.280 --> 00:03:53.060
  • Think of it.
  • 00:03:53.070 --> 00:03:54.190
  • It was pride that took Lucifer out of heaven.
  • 00:03:54.200 --> 00:04:00.020
  • It was pride that took Adam out of paradise.
  • 00:04:00.030 --> 00:04:04.290
  • It was pride that took Saul--King Saul,
  • 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:08.160
  • first king of Israel, out of the kingdom.
  • 00:04:08.170 --> 00:04:10.220
  • It was pride that took Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon,
  • 00:04:10.230 --> 00:04:14.040
  • out of Babylonian society.
  • 00:04:14.050 --> 00:04:15.230
  • It was pride that took Haman out of the Persian court.
  • 00:04:15.240 --> 00:04:21.290
  • It was pride that changed angels into demons.
  • 00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:24.200
  • It is pride that changes friends into enemies.
  • 00:04:24.210 --> 00:04:30.110
  • Pride ruins everything, and here's why.
  • 00:04:30.120 --> 00:04:32.260
  • Pride is the cancer of the soul, and if it's left undiagnosed
  • 00:04:32.270 --> 00:04:39.290
  • and untreated, it will destroy spiritual life.
  • 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:46.140
  • So the antidote is humility.
  • 00:04:46.150 --> 00:04:48.290
  • That's the cure for this age-long disease, humility;
  • 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:54.030
  • and that has been the theme in chapter 2 of Philippians
  • 00:04:54.040 --> 00:04:58.110
  • as Paul writes to this church.
  • 00:04:58.120 --> 00:05:01.060
  • It's been all about staying humble.
  • 00:05:01.070 --> 00:05:03.130
  • Verse 1 of Philippians 2, I'm bringing you back over what we
  • 00:05:03.140 --> 00:05:06.170
  • covered, "Therefore, if there is any consolation in Christ,
  • 00:05:06.180 --> 00:05:10.030
  • if any comfort of love, any fellowship of the Spirit,
  • 00:05:10.040 --> 00:05:12.250
  • if any affection and mercy,
  • 00:05:12.260 --> 00:05:14.270
  • fulfill my joy by being like-minded,
  • 00:05:14.280 --> 00:05:17.210
  • having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
  • 00:05:17.220 --> 00:05:22.010
  • Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit,
  • 00:05:22.020 --> 00:05:27.260
  • but in lowliness of mine," that's humility,
  • 00:05:27.270 --> 00:05:31.070
  • "let each esteem others better than himself.
  • 00:05:31.080 --> 00:05:34.020
  • Let each of you look out not only for his own interests,
  • 00:05:34.030 --> 00:05:37.000
  • but also for the interests of others."
  • 00:05:37.010 --> 00:05:40.270
  • So sacrifice over self, humility over vanity, preferring one
  • 00:05:40.280 --> 00:05:47.240
  • another over being prideful toward one another.
  • 00:05:47.250 --> 00:05:51.290
  • You see, to get along with people, you have to adjust.
  • 00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:57.140
  • You have to be interested in them.
  • 00:05:57.150 --> 00:05:59.020
  • You have to esteem them as important.
  • 00:05:59.030 --> 00:06:02.220
  • And if we dare to shine the spotlight off of ourselves for
  • 00:06:02.230 --> 00:06:09.080
  • just a minute and onto others for a while, we will discover
  • 00:06:09.090 --> 00:06:14.270
  • that unity is the result of our humility.
  • 00:06:14.280 --> 00:06:19.210
  • That's been the theme of this apostle.
  • 00:06:19.220 --> 00:06:22.180
  • Now after that principle, he now gives us an example.
  • 00:06:22.190 --> 00:06:25.150
  • Verse 5, "Let this mind be in you which was also
  • 00:06:25.160 --> 00:06:29.270
  • in Christ Jesus."
  • 00:06:29.280 --> 00:06:31.270
  • Because Jesus is, as we have seen, the ultimate example.
  • 00:06:31.280 --> 00:06:35.020
  • He is God, but he entered time and space in a human body.
  • 00:06:35.030 --> 00:06:39.290
  • Jesus left heaven's magnificence to come to earth's mess.
  • 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:45.060
  • He left glory to face gory.
  • 00:06:45.070 --> 00:06:50.210
  • He went to the cross.
  • 00:06:50.220 --> 00:06:54.030
  • That's where Paul left us in verse 8,
  • 00:06:54.040 --> 00:06:57.020
  • but now there's a change.
  • 00:06:57.030 --> 00:06:59.040
  • Now Paul wants us to know that all of that self-sacrifice and
  • 00:06:59.050 --> 00:07:02.250
  • humility was rewarded by God.
  • 00:07:02.260 --> 00:07:06.010
  • That's also part of his teaching.
  • 00:07:06.020 --> 00:07:07.220
  • It was rewarded when Jesus was exalted.
  • 00:07:07.230 --> 00:07:11.150
  • So the theme was the humiliation of Christ,
  • 00:07:11.160 --> 00:07:15.180
  • now it's the exaltation of Christ.
  • 00:07:15.190 --> 00:07:17.290
  • So look at verse 8 once again.
  • 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:20.050
  • You need verse 8 to understand verse 9 because of the first
  • 00:07:20.060 --> 00:07:23.140
  • word in verse 9, but let's look at verse 8.
  • 00:07:23.150 --> 00:07:26.060
  • "And being found in appearance as a man, he," Jesus,
  • 00:07:26.070 --> 00:07:29.130
  • "humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death,
  • 00:07:29.140 --> 00:07:33.010
  • even the death of the cross.
  • 00:07:33.020 --> 00:07:35.200
  • Therefore, God has also highly exalted him and given him the
  • 00:07:35.210 --> 00:07:41.090
  • name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every
  • 00:07:41.100 --> 00:07:46.120
  • knee should bow of those in heaven, of those on the earth,
  • 00:07:46.130 --> 00:07:51.240
  • and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should
  • 00:07:51.250 --> 00:07:55.160
  • confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory
  • 00:07:55.170 --> 00:08:00.070
  • of God the Father."
  • 00:08:00.080 --> 00:08:02.100
  • We told you last week that this was one of the first hymns
  • 00:08:02.110 --> 00:08:06.160
  • of the early church.
  • 00:08:06.170 --> 00:08:08.250
  • Most scholars believe this was the first creed of the early
  • 00:08:08.260 --> 00:08:11.270
  • church where they would take theological truths,
  • 00:08:11.280 --> 00:08:14.110
  • write them out, and then the church would sing them.
  • 00:08:14.120 --> 00:08:17.050
  • So that's my commission to the worship team.
  • 00:08:17.060 --> 00:08:20.230
  • Let's put these truths to music.
  • 00:08:20.240 --> 00:08:23.070
  • I love this little creed, this little hymn that was sung.
  • 00:08:23.080 --> 00:08:27.140
  • So according to this little hymn, they started with a Christ
  • 00:08:27.150 --> 00:08:33.030
  • pre-existent glory and went all the way down to the low point,
  • 00:08:33.040 --> 00:08:38.140
  • which is the cross, and then from the low point
  • 00:08:38.150 --> 00:08:41.180
  • to the post-incarnation glory and dominion of Jesus Christ
  • 00:08:41.190 --> 00:08:46.140
  • all in just a few verses.
  • 00:08:46.150 --> 00:08:48.110
  • What I like to do in looking at these verses with you is show
  • 00:08:48.120 --> 00:08:53.050
  • you three fundamental facts about humility,
  • 00:08:53.060 --> 00:08:57.180
  • three fundamental truths.
  • 00:08:57.190 --> 00:08:59.150
  • First of all, one you already know,
  • 00:08:59.160 --> 00:09:01.130
  • humility is sometimes painful.
  • 00:09:01.140 --> 00:09:05.080
  • In fact, it usually is.
  • 00:09:05.090 --> 00:09:07.040
  • You know, it's hard to just humble yourself before a person.
  • 00:09:07.050 --> 00:09:09.150
  • You got to swallow some pride.
  • 00:09:09.160 --> 00:09:10.250
  • "That hurt."
  • 00:09:10.260 --> 00:09:15.020
  • It's going to put you out a little bit and it's painful,
  • 00:09:15.030 --> 00:09:19.250
  • and that is part of the thought in verse 8 concerning Christ.
  • 00:09:19.260 --> 00:09:23.170
  • "Being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself
  • 00:09:23.180 --> 00:09:27.060
  • and became obedient," watch this, "to the point of death,
  • 00:09:27.070 --> 00:09:33.080
  • even the death of the cross."
  • 00:09:33.090 --> 00:09:39.020
  • Jesus's birth was miraculous and Jesus's life was extraordinary,
  • 00:09:39.030 --> 00:09:47.100
  • but it's Jesus's death that is the epicenter of redemptive
  • 00:09:47.110 --> 00:09:51.190
  • history and--I've noticed that when people think about
  • 00:09:51.200 --> 00:09:58.170
  • Jesus--worldly people I'm talking about.
  • 00:09:58.180 --> 00:10:00.220
  • Not Christians as much but worldly people, when it comes to
  • 00:10:00.230 --> 00:10:03.160
  • thinking about Christ, they prefer the Jesus of Christmas.
  • 00:10:03.170 --> 00:10:08.110
  • They like that Jesus. It's the little baby Jesus.
  • 00:10:08.120 --> 00:10:11.090
  • You know, the angels are singing and the shepherds are there.
  • 00:10:11.100 --> 00:10:13.170
  • The wise men come.
  • 00:10:13.180 --> 00:10:15.060
  • But that is not the focus of the New Testament.
  • 00:10:15.070 --> 00:10:18.050
  • The focus of, in fact, the whole Bible isn't the manger
  • 00:10:18.060 --> 00:10:24.130
  • but the cross.
  • 00:10:24.140 --> 00:10:25.230
  • It's not the Jesus of Christmas, it's the Jesus of Calvary.
  • 00:10:25.240 --> 00:10:29.050
  • It's not the baby in the manger, it's the body on the cross.
  • 00:10:29.060 --> 00:10:32.180
  • Even Jesus in Revelation 13 is referred to as the lamb
  • 00:10:32.190 --> 00:10:37.250
  • slain from the foundation of the world.
  • 00:10:37.260 --> 00:10:41.280
  • That is it was always in God's mind from the beginning
  • 00:10:41.290 --> 00:10:45.130
  • that the epicenter of all history--all redemptive history
  • 00:10:45.140 --> 00:10:49.110
  • would be the cross.
  • 00:10:49.120 --> 00:10:51.110
  • Hey, even when Jesus was born, remember they brought gold,
  • 00:10:51.120 --> 00:10:54.110
  • frankincense, and what?
  • 00:10:54.120 --> 00:10:56.140
  • That's embalming fluid.
  • 00:10:56.150 --> 00:10:57.240
  • Did you know that? Myrrh is embalming fluid.
  • 00:10:57.250 --> 00:11:00.290
  • So think about Mary getting embalming fluid.
  • 00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:04.050
  • "Thanks, I guess."
  • 00:11:04.060 --> 00:11:06.180
  • I mean, it could be sold and you could use the money
  • 00:11:06.190 --> 00:11:09.160
  • for something, but embalming fluid, myrrh,
  • 00:11:09.170 --> 00:11:12.120
  • was a very costly embalming fluid.
  • 00:11:12.130 --> 00:11:14.110
  • We know that because when Jesus died, they took 100 pounds
  • 00:11:14.120 --> 00:11:18.040
  • of myrrh and aloes and placed that on Jesus's body
  • 00:11:18.050 --> 00:11:21.260
  • and buried him in a tomb.
  • 00:11:21.270 --> 00:11:23.200
  • So even from his birth, it was pointing to his death,
  • 00:11:23.210 --> 00:11:28.110
  • and we always need to keep that framed in our hearts.
  • 00:11:28.120 --> 00:11:33.140
  • Did you know that if you were to read the four Gospels and count
  • 00:11:33.150 --> 00:11:36.020
  • the chapters that speak about Jesus's first 30 years of life
  • 00:11:36.030 --> 00:11:40.260
  • on earth, you'd only find four chapters that even mentioned
  • 00:11:40.270 --> 00:11:45.100
  • what was going on in the first 30 years of his life?
  • 00:11:45.110 --> 00:11:49.150
  • But did you know also that 85 chapters speak
  • 00:11:49.160 --> 00:11:53.000
  • of the last 3 1/2 years of Jesus's life?
  • 00:11:53.010 --> 00:11:56.100
  • So what do you think they're focusing on?
  • 00:11:56.110 --> 00:11:58.070
  • Last 3 1/2 years.
  • 00:11:58.080 --> 00:11:59.270
  • Of those 85 chapters, 29 of them focus in only on the last week
  • 00:11:59.280 --> 00:12:05.060
  • of Christ on the earth.
  • 00:12:05.070 --> 00:12:06.190
  • And of those 29 chapters, 13 deal with the final day
  • 00:12:06.200 --> 00:12:12.100
  • of his life.
  • 00:12:12.110 --> 00:12:13.200
  • So if you were to count up verses, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and
  • 00:12:13.210 --> 00:12:15.290
  • John, you'd find 579 verses that are focused in on and deal with
  • 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:22.090
  • the last 24 hours of Jesus's life as he goes to the cross.
  • 00:12:22.100 --> 00:12:28.150
  • So all pre-New Testament history looks forward to the cross,
  • 00:12:28.160 --> 00:12:33.260
  • all post-New Testament history looks back to the cross.
  • 00:12:33.270 --> 00:12:40.030
  • Graham Scroggie, a British commentator, said,
  • 00:12:40.040 --> 00:12:43.200
  • "Cut the Bible anywhere and it bleeds."
  • 00:12:43.210 --> 00:12:48.190
  • He's right.
  • 00:12:48.200 --> 00:12:49.290
  • You could cut the Bible in Genesis 22, Abraham's
  • 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:52.270
  • sacrificing his son, it'll bleed right there 'cause it
  • 00:12:52.280 --> 00:12:56.100
  • anticipates God sending his son on that same mountain.
  • 00:12:56.110 --> 00:13:01.100
  • If you cut the Bible in Psalm 22, which is a poetic
  • 00:13:01.110 --> 00:13:04.120
  • description of the crucifixion, it bleeds.
  • 00:13:04.130 --> 00:13:07.050
  • If you cut the Bible in Exodus 12,
  • 00:13:07.060 --> 00:13:09.060
  • speaking of the Passover, it bleeds.
  • 00:13:09.070 --> 00:13:11.180
  • If you cut it in Leviticus 5, the sin offering, it bleeds.
  • 00:13:11.190 --> 00:13:15.070
  • Cut it in Isaiah chapter 53, it bleeds.
  • 00:13:15.080 --> 00:13:19.040
  • It's all about the sacrifice, all about the cross so much so
  • 00:13:19.050 --> 00:13:24.230
  • that even when John the Apostle gets a vision of heaven and
  • 00:13:24.240 --> 00:13:28.180
  • looks at the lion of the tribe of Judah, he said,
  • 00:13:28.190 --> 00:13:32.170
  • "And I looked and behold a lamb as though it had been," what?
  • 00:13:32.180 --> 00:13:37.140
  • Tell me. Slain.
  • 00:13:37.150 --> 00:13:41.090
  • In heaven, you could see marks on this lamb
  • 00:13:41.100 --> 00:13:46.270
  • as though it had been killed.
  • 00:13:46.280 --> 00:13:48.070
  • Have you ever thought of this?
  • 00:13:48.080 --> 00:13:49.170
  • The only work of man you'll see in heaven are the marks of
  • 00:13:49.180 --> 00:13:54.120
  • crucifixion on the body of Jesus Christ, and he'll wear that as a
  • 00:13:54.130 --> 00:13:59.280
  • badge of honor and glory because that's how you got there.
  • 00:13:59.290 --> 00:14:05.160
  • A lamb as though it had been slain.
  • 00:14:05.170 --> 00:14:07.230
  • So for Jesus, humility was painful because for Jesus
  • 00:14:07.240 --> 00:14:12.140
  • it meant crucifixion, the most degrading,
  • 00:14:12.150 --> 00:14:16.040
  • the most embarrassing, the most excruciating form of death
  • 00:14:16.050 --> 00:14:20.130
  • at the time known to man.
  • 00:14:20.140 --> 00:14:22.150
  • Crucifixion was invented by the Persians.
  • 00:14:22.160 --> 00:14:24.180
  • They were pantheistic.
  • 00:14:24.190 --> 00:14:26.080
  • They believed the earth was sacred.
  • 00:14:26.090 --> 00:14:27.230
  • They didn't want people to die on it.
  • 00:14:27.240 --> 00:14:29.160
  • So they raised them up on a pole.
  • 00:14:29.170 --> 00:14:31.000
  • That's how they invented crucifixion,
  • 00:14:31.010 --> 00:14:32.150
  • because of that belief.
  • 00:14:32.160 --> 00:14:34.010
  • Later on, the Romans took crucifixion
  • 00:14:34.020 --> 00:14:36.220
  • and they perfected it.
  • 00:14:36.230 --> 00:14:39.170
  • What I mean by that is they managed to let crucifixion
  • 00:14:39.180 --> 00:14:44.120
  • become the death that was preferred for capital punishment
  • 00:14:44.130 --> 00:14:48.080
  • for non-citizens because it deliberately delayed death
  • 00:14:48.090 --> 00:14:52.050
  • for hours and even days.
  • 00:14:52.060 --> 00:14:54.120
  • So people got the maximum torture before they died.
  • 00:14:54.130 --> 00:14:59.210
  • Jesus was humble enough to go to death on the cross.
  • 00:14:59.220 --> 00:15:07.110
  • Why? Why such humility?
  • 00:15:07.120 --> 00:15:09.050
  • Why lower yourself from heaven to earth
  • 00:15:09.060 --> 00:15:12.210
  • and then from earth to the cross?
  • 00:15:12.220 --> 00:15:14.080
  • Why go that low?
  • 00:15:14.090 --> 00:15:16.080
  • Because it's that humility that provides the one thing you
  • 00:15:16.090 --> 00:15:20.280
  • and I need more than anything else in the world:
  • 00:15:20.290 --> 00:15:23.170
  • forgiveness, forgiveness.
  • 00:15:23.180 --> 00:15:27.170
  • Well, why would God go to that extent to forgive us?
  • 00:15:27.180 --> 00:15:31.190
  • Answer?
  • 00:15:31.200 --> 00:15:32.290
  • Love, 'cause he loves us.
  • 00:15:33.000 --> 00:15:35.070
  • For God so loved the world that he gave.
  • 00:15:35.080 --> 00:15:37.090
  • You can still ask questions like,
  • 00:15:37.100 --> 00:15:39.020
  • "Well, why does God love us that much?"
  • 00:15:39.030 --> 00:15:40.180
  • That I can't answer.
  • 00:15:40.190 --> 00:15:42.070
  • I don't have a good answer for that 'cause I know us.
  • 00:15:42.080 --> 00:15:46.130
  • I certainly know me.
  • 00:15:46.140 --> 00:15:48.160
  • And why God would love me that much,
  • 00:15:48.170 --> 00:15:52.110
  • I don't have a good answer for it.
  • 00:15:52.120 --> 00:15:54.100
  • Just a decision he made, and I'm glad he did.
  • 00:15:54.110 --> 00:15:58.060
  • One of my favorite hymns is called "The Love of God."
  • 00:15:58.070 --> 00:16:01.090
  • Some of you've heard of "The Love of God"
  • 00:16:01.100 --> 00:16:02.210
  • by Frederick Lehman written in the 1800s.
  • 00:16:02.220 --> 00:16:05.230
  • "The Love of God is greater far than ink or pen could ever tell.
  • 00:16:05.240 --> 00:16:09.200
  • It stretches to the farthest star,
  • 00:16:09.210 --> 00:16:12.260
  • it reaches to the lowest hell."
  • 00:16:12.270 --> 00:16:14.220
  • But here's my favorite line in the song.
  • 00:16:14.230 --> 00:16:16.200
  • "Could we with ink the oceans fill,
  • 00:16:16.210 --> 00:16:20.040
  • and were the skies of parchment made?
  • 00:16:20.050 --> 00:16:23.290
  • Were every stalk on earth a quill and every man
  • 00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:27.260
  • a scribe by trade?
  • 00:16:27.270 --> 00:16:30.080
  • To write the love of God would drain the oceans dry;
  • 00:16:30.090 --> 00:16:34.170
  • nor could the scroll contain the whole though stretched
  • 00:16:34.180 --> 00:16:38.290
  • from sky to sky."
  • 00:16:39.000 --> 00:16:41.060
  • The unfathomable love of God in sending his son
  • 00:16:41.070 --> 00:16:47.030
  • to pay the penalty for sin so that we could be forgiven.
  • 00:16:47.040 --> 00:16:53.070
  • For Jesus, humility was painful.
  • 00:16:53.080 --> 00:16:56.040
  • Now let's apply that.
  • 00:16:56.050 --> 00:16:58.240
  • For you and I, humility is going to be painful,
  • 00:16:58.250 --> 00:17:03.120
  • not as painful as it was for Jesus.
  • 00:17:03.130 --> 00:17:05.220
  • Probably not.
  • 00:17:05.230 --> 00:17:07.020
  • It says in the Book of Hebrews, "We have not resisted to the
  • 00:17:07.030 --> 00:17:10.140
  • point of shedding blood," but it's going to cost nonetheless.
  • 00:17:10.150 --> 00:17:15.140
  • It hurts, as I said, to swallow pride.
  • 00:17:15.150 --> 00:17:17.290
  • It's going to cost you comfort to be humble.
  • 00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:21.150
  • It's going to cost you perhaps your reputation
  • 00:17:21.160 --> 00:17:25.050
  • if you humble yourself.
  • 00:17:25.060 --> 00:17:26.290
  • It could cost you a whole lot of misunderstanding.
  • 00:17:27.000 --> 00:17:29.190
  • It's going to cost you time.
  • 00:17:29.200 --> 00:17:30.290
  • It's even going to cost you money.
  • 00:17:31.000 --> 00:17:34.040
  • So humility is sometimes painful, but here's the second
  • 00:17:34.050 --> 00:17:39.030
  • fundamental truth about humility,
  • 00:17:39.040 --> 00:17:40.240
  • and this is really the crux of these verses.
  • 00:17:40.250 --> 00:17:43.130
  • Humility is always hopeful.
  • 00:17:43.140 --> 00:17:47.170
  • Beginning in verse 9, it's a complete reversal
  • 00:17:47.180 --> 00:17:52.050
  • of verses 6 through 8.
  • 00:17:52.060 --> 00:17:53.150
  • So verse 6, 7, and 8, it's like Jesus went
  • 00:17:53.160 --> 00:17:55.170
  • down, down, down, down, death on the cross.
  • 00:17:55.180 --> 00:17:59.010
  • Now beginning in verse 9, it's he went up, up,
  • 00:17:59.020 --> 00:18:02.220
  • up to the highest possible level.
  • 00:18:02.230 --> 00:18:05.200
  • Verse 9, "Therefore, God has also highly exalted him and
  • 00:18:05.210 --> 00:18:12.170
  • given him the name which is above every name, that at the
  • 00:18:12.180 --> 00:18:18.130
  • name of Jesus every knee should bow of those in heaven,
  • 00:18:18.140 --> 00:18:22.290
  • and those on earth, and of those under the earth,
  • 00:18:23.000 --> 00:18:26.120
  • and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ
  • 00:18:26.130 --> 00:18:29.120
  • is Lord to the glory of God the Father."
  • 00:18:29.130 --> 00:18:33.020
  • Notice the word therefore.
  • 00:18:33.030 --> 00:18:35.210
  • Therefore in verse 9 refers back to the thought in verse 8.
  • 00:18:35.220 --> 00:18:38.150
  • So here's the thought.
  • 00:18:38.160 --> 00:18:40.070
  • Because Jesus humbled himself before the Father,
  • 00:18:40.080 --> 00:18:44.140
  • the Father has exalted Christ.
  • 00:18:44.150 --> 00:18:48.050
  • This is what the Father has done for Jesus.
  • 00:18:48.060 --> 00:18:50.050
  • What has he done?
  • 00:18:50.060 --> 00:18:53.170
  • Highly exalted him, highly exalted him.
  • 00:18:53.180 --> 00:18:56.290
  • The words "highly exalted", it's one word in the Greek.
  • 00:18:57.000 --> 00:18:59.260
  • It's huperupsoo, which means hyper-exalted.
  • 00:18:59.270 --> 00:19:06.160
  • Huper, hyper or super exalted.
  • 00:19:06.170 --> 00:19:09.000
  • It means to lift up and over.
  • 00:19:09.010 --> 00:19:12.160
  • So Jesus said, "I'm going low, low, low,"
  • 00:19:12.170 --> 00:19:15.230
  • and God has says, "I will lift, lift, lift.
  • 00:19:15.240 --> 00:19:18.200
  • I will hyper-lift. I will super exalt Jesus."
  • 00:19:18.210 --> 00:19:24.260
  • A thought struck me as I was going through
  • 00:19:24.270 --> 00:19:26.210
  • this study this week.
  • 00:19:26.220 --> 00:19:28.010
  • I'm going through this, I'm looking at what God's estimation
  • 00:19:28.020 --> 00:19:31.190
  • of--is of Jesus in exalting him and this thought struck me.
  • 00:19:31.200 --> 00:19:37.220
  • God the Father's treatment of Christ, view of Christ,
  • 00:19:37.230 --> 00:19:41.240
  • estimation of Christ is the polar opposite
  • 00:19:41.250 --> 00:19:46.010
  • of the world's estimation of Christ.
  • 00:19:46.020 --> 00:19:50.070
  • For the most part it is. So here's an example.
  • 00:19:50.080 --> 00:19:52.130
  • When Jesus came to heal the daughter of the ruler of the
  • 00:19:52.140 --> 00:19:55.190
  • synagogue in Luke 8, it says they laughed him to scorn.
  • 00:19:55.200 --> 00:20:02.020
  • When Jesus said, "No man can serve two masters.
  • 00:20:02.030 --> 00:20:04.280
  • You can't serve God and money."
  • 00:20:04.290 --> 00:20:06.100
  • We are told the Pharisees sneered at him.
  • 00:20:06.110 --> 00:20:10.040
  • When Jesus raised up Lazarus from the dead,
  • 00:20:10.050 --> 00:20:12.210
  • the leaders plotted to put him to death.
  • 00:20:12.220 --> 00:20:17.000
  • When Jesus stood before that same crowd,
  • 00:20:17.010 --> 00:20:19.230
  • the Sanhedrin in Matthew 26, they spat in his face.
  • 00:20:19.240 --> 00:20:24.220
  • They beat him.
  • 00:20:24.230 --> 00:20:26.050
  • Others struck him with the palms of their hands.
  • 00:20:26.060 --> 00:20:29.160
  • And when Jesus was given by them to the Romans,
  • 00:20:29.170 --> 00:20:32.260
  • it says they struck him, they mocked him,
  • 00:20:32.270 --> 00:20:35.040
  • and they led him away to be crucified.
  • 00:20:35.050 --> 00:20:38.230
  • So how did the world treat Jesus?
  • 00:20:38.240 --> 00:20:41.200
  • With rejection and extermination.
  • 00:20:41.210 --> 00:20:45.290
  • How did God treat Jesus?
  • 00:20:46.000 --> 00:20:47.090
  • With hyper exaltation, super exaltation.
  • 00:20:47.100 --> 00:20:52.050
  • Now, the focus of Paul is the upward trajectory after
  • 00:20:52.060 --> 00:20:59.200
  • the cross, the upward trajectory of being exalted.
  • 00:20:59.210 --> 00:21:04.180
  • God highly exalted him.
  • 00:21:04.190 --> 00:21:07.030
  • What I want you to--what I want to do is sort of expand your
  • 00:21:07.040 --> 00:21:09.210
  • knowledge of that and let you know that the exaltation
  • 00:21:09.220 --> 00:21:13.000
  • of Christ came in four phases.
  • 00:21:13.010 --> 00:21:15.280
  • First of all, there was the resurrection.
  • 00:21:15.290 --> 00:21:18.210
  • Jesus died at the hands of sinful men, but it says in Acts
  • 00:21:18.220 --> 00:21:22.120
  • chapter 2--Peter says, "This Jesus whom you crucified,
  • 00:21:22.130 --> 00:21:25.210
  • God has raised up to new life."
  • 00:21:25.220 --> 00:21:29.070
  • Resurrection, first phase of the exaltation.
  • 00:21:29.080 --> 00:21:32.220
  • Second phase, his ascension into heaven.
  • 00:21:32.230 --> 00:21:36.140
  • The disciples were there when it happened.
  • 00:21:36.150 --> 00:21:38.140
  • They stood on the Mount of Olives.
  • 00:21:38.150 --> 00:21:40.000
  • They're standing there with Jesus and suddenly he starts,
  • 00:21:40.010 --> 00:21:43.010
  • like, floating up.
  • 00:21:43.020 --> 00:21:45.020
  • They're watching.
  • 00:21:45.030 --> 00:21:52.200
  • "Bye."
  • 00:21:52.210 --> 00:21:54.000
  • He vanished out of their sight. He left.
  • 00:21:54.010 --> 00:21:56.200
  • He ascended up into heaven where he sits
  • 00:21:56.210 --> 00:21:58.280
  • at the right hand of God.
  • 00:21:58.290 --> 00:22:01.110
  • Takes us to the third phase.
  • 00:22:01.120 --> 00:22:02.240
  • After the resurrection, after the ascension, his dominion.
  • 00:22:02.250 --> 00:22:07.230
  • Jesus after the resurrection said, "All authority in heaven
  • 00:22:07.240 --> 00:22:13.240
  • and on earth is given to me."
  • 00:22:13.250 --> 00:22:16.070
  • So Jesus took his rightful place of dominion with the Father
  • 00:22:16.080 --> 00:22:21.030
  • in heaven.
  • 00:22:21.040 --> 00:22:22.170
  • And the fourth phase was a new position for Jesus:
  • 00:22:22.180 --> 00:22:27.240
  • intercession, intercession.
  • 00:22:27.250 --> 00:22:31.000
  • Here's what I want you to think of.
  • 00:22:31.010 --> 00:22:32.160
  • Jesus is not inactive.
  • 00:22:32.170 --> 00:22:35.220
  • He's not just sitting around heaven looking at the Father
  • 00:22:35.230 --> 00:22:39.000
  • going, "So what do we do today?
  • 00:22:39.010 --> 00:22:40.100
  • We're just going to hang out together?"
  • 00:22:40.110 --> 00:22:44.010
  • No, he's very busy. He's very active.
  • 00:22:44.020 --> 00:22:48.000
  • Jesus died on the cross.
  • 00:22:48.010 --> 00:22:50.000
  • He acted as Savior by becoming the sacrifice.
  • 00:22:50.010 --> 00:22:52.250
  • Today, he is playing the role of the great high priest.
  • 00:22:52.260 --> 00:22:58.100
  • So this is what the Book of Hebrews says in chapter 7.
  • 00:22:58.110 --> 00:23:00.250
  • He, Jesus, always lives to make intercession for us.
  • 00:23:00.260 --> 00:23:07.110
  • You know what intercession is, right?
  • 00:23:07.120 --> 00:23:09.130
  • He's praying for you.
  • 00:23:09.140 --> 00:23:11.000
  • How does that make you feel?
  • 00:23:11.010 --> 00:23:12.170
  • Jesus Christ is praying for you,
  • 00:23:12.180 --> 00:23:16.020
  • speaking about you to his Father.
  • 00:23:16.030 --> 00:23:18.060
  • Can you lose with that?
  • 00:23:18.070 --> 00:23:20.240
  • I mean, I don't know how you feel when somebody goes,
  • 00:23:20.250 --> 00:23:22.100
  • "Hey, I've been praying for you lately."
  • 00:23:22.110 --> 00:23:23.200
  • You go, "Thank you. That makes me feel really good."
  • 00:23:23.210 --> 00:23:25.280
  • Jesus is saying to you, "I've been praying for you lately."
  • 00:23:25.290 --> 00:23:30.020
  • He ever lives to make intercession for us.
  • 00:23:30.030 --> 00:23:34.230
  • So his work of redemption is over,
  • 00:23:34.240 --> 00:23:37.290
  • his work of intercession is ongoing.
  • 00:23:38.000 --> 00:23:41.100
  • He is our heavenly attorney.
  • 00:23:41.110 --> 00:23:44.110
  • No lawyer jokes here.
  • 00:23:44.120 --> 00:23:46.240
  • He is our heaven--you can't get a better attorney.
  • 00:23:46.250 --> 00:23:49.140
  • Mary is not your heavenly attorney.
  • 00:23:49.150 --> 00:23:51.090
  • The saints are not your heavenly attorneys.
  • 00:23:51.100 --> 00:23:53.110
  • Jesus himself is the one who talks to the Father
  • 00:23:53.120 --> 00:23:56.140
  • on your behalf.
  • 00:23:56.150 --> 00:23:58.090
  • Humility is always helpful. Look at verse 9 again.
  • 00:23:58.100 --> 00:24:04.000
  • God has super exalted him, huperupsoo.
  • 00:24:04.010 --> 00:24:06.260
  • He has highly exalted him and given him--does it say a name?
  • 00:24:06.270 --> 00:24:13.110
  • It says the name.
  • 00:24:13.120 --> 00:24:14.230
  • Thank you. The name.
  • 00:24:14.240 --> 00:24:16.180
  • Definite article.
  • 00:24:16.190 --> 00:24:17.280
  • He has given him the name which is above every name.
  • 00:24:17.290 --> 00:24:23.060
  • In other words, God the Father has given Jesus a designation,
  • 00:24:23.070 --> 00:24:27.200
  • not a common name, but some superlative name that marks
  • 00:24:27.210 --> 00:24:32.140
  • Jesus far and above all others, all comparison.
  • 00:24:32.150 --> 00:24:36.290
  • Now, what is the name that is above all other names?
  • 00:24:37.000 --> 00:24:40.260
  • We could say, "Well, it says in verse 10 at the name of Jesus."
  • 00:24:40.270 --> 00:24:44.270
  • Yes, but that was his name at birth and that is--that was--I
  • 00:24:44.280 --> 00:24:48.110
  • mean, when you hear of Jesus today,
  • 00:24:48.120 --> 00:24:51.000
  • everybody knows who we're talking about.
  • 00:24:51.010 --> 00:24:53.070
  • But 2.000 years ago if you say Jesus,
  • 00:24:53.080 --> 00:24:55.220
  • you know what they're going to say to you?
  • 00:24:55.230 --> 00:24:57.180
  • "Which one?"
  • 00:24:57.190 --> 00:24:59.120
  • It was such a common name that Jesus had to be called Jesus of
  • 00:24:59.130 --> 00:25:04.020
  • Nazareth 'cause there was Jesus of Cana, Jesus of Capernaum.
  • 00:25:04.030 --> 00:25:08.040
  • There were so many different people named Yeshua.
  • 00:25:08.050 --> 00:25:11.030
  • Jesus was such a common name.
  • 00:25:11.040 --> 00:25:13.150
  • So when Paul says God has given him a name, the name above all
  • 00:25:13.160 --> 00:25:16.240
  • names, we're told what that name is but not until verse 11.
  • 00:25:16.250 --> 00:25:21.140
  • It's not the name of Jesus, his common earthly name.
  • 00:25:21.150 --> 00:25:24.170
  • It says, "And every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is,"
  • 00:25:24.180 --> 00:25:28.080
  • what?
  • 00:25:28.090 --> 00:25:29.180
  • That's the name.
  • 00:25:29.190 --> 00:25:31.130
  • Lord--Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
  • 00:25:31.140 --> 00:25:36.250
  • Here's what I want you to see. Here's what Paul is saying.
  • 00:25:36.260 --> 00:25:39.000
  • God the Father is calling Jesus Christ the Lord.
  • 00:25:39.010 --> 00:25:45.130
  • This is monumental.
  • 00:25:45.140 --> 00:25:51.060
  • In the New Testament, there are two uses of the term lord.
  • 00:25:51.070 --> 00:25:55.290
  • The first term is sort of a term of respect.
  • 00:25:56.000 --> 00:25:59.260
  • It's the equivalent of sir.
  • 00:25:59.270 --> 00:26:01.140
  • Small l for lord.
  • 00:26:01.150 --> 00:26:04.060
  • So you might say to a master of a house, "lord,"
  • 00:26:04.070 --> 00:26:07.160
  • but you use it in the small lowercase l.
  • 00:26:07.170 --> 00:26:11.270
  • It's a term of respect.
  • 00:26:11.280 --> 00:26:13.070
  • Sir.
  • 00:26:13.080 --> 00:26:14.170
  • The second and most common usage is God the Lord.
  • 00:26:14.180 --> 00:26:20.090
  • 00:26:20.100 --> 00:26:24.210
  • announcer: Now, we want to tell you about a resource that
  • 00:26:24.220 --> 00:26:26.110
  • can help you become more familiar with the Holy Spirit
  • 00:26:26.120 --> 00:26:29.000
  • and how he helps you overcome sin.
  • 00:26:29.010 --> 00:26:31.080
  • 00:26:31.090 --> 00:26:36.230
  • announcer: Counselor, helper, comforter,
  • 00:26:36.240 --> 00:26:39.090
  • these are some of the names for the Holy Spirit,
  • 00:26:39.100 --> 00:26:41.060
  • the third person in the Trinity who wants to empower your life.
  • 00:26:41.070 --> 00:26:44.110
  • The Holy Spirit isn't a warm, fuzzy feeling.
  • 00:26:44.120 --> 00:26:47.050
  • He's a person who loves you and works in you
  • 00:26:47.060 --> 00:26:49.210
  • to become more like Jesus.
  • 00:26:49.220 --> 00:26:51.020
  • We want to help you understand the Holy Spirit by sending you
  • 00:26:51.030 --> 00:26:53.290
  • the DVD, "Expound Holy Spirit," plus this booklet both
  • 00:26:54.000 --> 00:26:57.110
  • by Skip Heitzig.
  • 00:26:57.120 --> 00:26:58.220
  • It's our way of saying thank you when you give
  • 00:26:58.230 --> 00:27:00.230
  • online or call today.
  • 00:27:00.240 --> 00:27:02.160
  • announcer: Be sure to join us next time as Skip talks about
  • 00:27:10.280 --> 00:27:13.010
  • some of the rewards that come from living with humility.
  • 00:27:13.020 --> 00:27:15.290
  • 00:27:16.000 --> 00:27:19.150
  • announcer: "Connect with Skip Heitzig" is a presentation of
  • 00:27:19.160 --> 00:27:21.240
  • Connection Communications, connecting you to God's
  • 00:27:21.250 --> 00:27:24.240
  • never-changing truth in ever-changing times.
  • 00:27:24.250 --> 00:27:27.140
