  • Hey this is Levi and I wanna thank you so much for watching Fresh Life TV it is such an
  • 00:01:07.280 --> 00:01:13.240
  • incredible privilege to get to bring God's word into your life. And that's exactly what we're
  • 00:01:13.260 --> 00:01:18.140
  • about to do.
  • 00:01:18.160 --> 00:01:20.160
  • We're gonna have our attention turned to the Gospel of John. Where we're gonna be looking
  • 00:01:20.180 --> 00:01:24.020
  • at the seven different times that Jesus disclosed His identity using the words I Am and then
  • 00:01:24.040 --> 00:01:30.290
  • telling us who He is.
  • 00:01:31.010 --> 00:01:33.030
  • We'll be going from the bread of life, to the true vine,to the door of the sheep and the good
  • 00:01:33.050 --> 00:01:39.060
  • shepherd to the resurrection and the life.
  • 00:01:39.080 --> 00:01:42.050
  • Come on, it's going to be an incredible ride.
  • 00:01:42.070 --> 00:01:45.160
  • And I also love that He chose seven different times to tell us who He is.
  • 00:01:45.180 --> 00:01:49.230
  • Cause if you know anything about Scripture you'll know that the number seven is kinda like one of God's
  • 00:01:49.250 --> 00:01:54.010
  • favorite Easter eggs.He loves to hide in and pepper in not only in to the scripture but really
  • 00:01:54.030 --> 00:01:59.110
  • into all of creation, this number seven.
  • 00:01:59.130 --> 00:02:01.230
  • That really speaks of completion or fullness. It's in the calendar, seven days in the week. It's
  • 00:02:01.250 --> 00:02:08.040
  • in the rainbow, seven colors. It's in the musical scale,it's even in the amount of Harry Potter
  • 00:02:08.060 --> 00:02:13.210
  • books there are.
  • 00:02:13.230 --> 00:02:16.010
  • Now I'm not sure if God had anything to do with that but it is an incredible thing because in
  • 00:02:16.030 --> 00:02:19.100
  • the seven statements of Jesus this Magnificent Seven,we're gonna get a totality, a full
  • 00:02:19.120 --> 00:02:26.130
  • picture of the rainbow, of who He is, and how He wanted to reveal himself to us.
  • 00:02:26.150 --> 00:02:31.070
  • And through that our lives can be changed in the process.
  • 00:02:31.090 --> 00:02:34.230
  • If in anyway you're encouraged by this message or blessed we sure would love to hear about it
  • 00:02:34.250 --> 00:02:39.190
  • Shoot me an email at Levi@freshlife.church and I would love to hear what God is doing in your life.
  • 00:02:39.210 --> 00:02:45.130
  • As well, if you want to support this ministry financially and help us to bring God's word to
  • 00:02:45.150 --> 00:02:50.290
  • more people it would be a thrill to partner with you in that way.

  • 00:02:54.150 --> 00:02:58.020
  • Well, let's jump into today's message.
  • 00:02:58.040 --> 00:03:00.170
  • If you have a Bible with you that you brought, you could join me in John chapter 6,
  • 00:03:00.190 --> 00:03:06.050
  • where we're going to be for this week's message. If you didn't bring a Bible or an app
  • 00:03:06.070 --> 00:03:10.120
  • where you can get on to God's word, we always put the verses up on the screen for
  • 00:03:10.140 --> 00:03:13.190
  • you.But John chapter 6. Title of my message is Soul Food. Soul food, from John chapter 6.
  • 00:03:13.210 --> 00:03:21.220
  • There's a lot of eating we do. We all eat things every day. And we don't just eat regular
  • 00:03:21.240 --> 00:03:29.290
  • food, though that's normally what we think of.When we talk about eating, we think
  • 00:03:30.010 --> 00:03:32.170
  • about what goes in our belly. But also it can apply to what goes in our mind. I mean, if
  • 00:03:32.190 --> 00:03:37.260
  • someone tells you something you hadn't thought of before, you might say, that's food
  • 00:03:37.280 --> 00:03:41.130
  • for thought. That's food for thought. Or if you bought a new book and it was ridiculous,
  • 00:03:41.150 --> 00:03:47.130
  • and I said to you,man,how is that new book, you might say, I couldn't put it down, I
  • 00:03:47.150 --> 00:03:52.290
  • devoured it.And you're talking about information being assimilated, but you're speaking of it as food.
  • 00:03:53.010 --> 00:03:59.200
  • So the point is there's more than one kind of food. And what we're going to see in
  • 00:03:59.220 --> 00:04:05.260
  • John's gospel the sixth chapter is that there's another kind of food that's not even a
  • 00:04:05.280 --> 00:04:10.180
  • kind of food that goes in your stomach, nor is it a kind of food that goes into your mind.
  • 00:04:10.200 --> 00:04:14.050
  • It's a kind of food that goes into your soul. And the thesis is that this is the most
  • 00:04:14.070 --> 00:04:20.090
  • important kind of food.Why? Here we go. Because a full stomach is temporary, but a full soul is forever.
  • 00:04:20.110 --> 00:04:28.260
  • That's my whole message in a sentence. Boom, done. I'm out of here. See you guys.
  • 00:04:28.280 --> 00:04:32.140
  • No, but that's it.That's the talk.A full soul is forever. Full mind or a full stomach, that's just temporary.
  • 00:04:32.160 --> 00:04:41.210
  • All right, so John 6. What's been going on before we jump in here? We don't have time
  • 00:04:41.230 --> 00:04:45.050
  • to read the whole chapter. It's a great, long chapter. A lot of action. The skinny is this-
  • 00:04:45.070 --> 00:04:49.250
  • Jesus and his disciples,they were tired. They have been busting it, man. I mean, they
  • 00:04:49.270 --> 00:04:54.030
  • have been going hard.They had just got off the 16 and 1/2 hour flight from
  • 00:04:54.050 --> 00:04:57.170
  • Johannesburg to Atlanta, one of the longest flights you can take on this earth, and they
  • 00:04:57.190 --> 00:05:00.150
  • were tired. That's stressful. That's hectic. They had a newborn baby with them on the
  • 00:05:00.170 --> 00:05:03.290
  • flight. Man, that kid didn't like it much, the time zones and whatnot. Neither did his dad.
  • 00:05:04.010 --> 00:05:09.100
  • So being tired as they were, Jesus said to his disciples,guys we need to take a break.
  • 00:05:09.120 --> 00:05:13.270
  • There's an old proverb that says if you always keep the bow bent it will snap. You
  • 00:05:13.290 --> 00:05:20.080
  • need to let the bow relax,let the string relax. And so it is when it comes to your life. If
  • 00:05:20.100 --> 00:05:25.030
  • you don't take the wisdom of how God created the world with the day off at the end of
  • 00:05:25.050 --> 00:05:29.050
  • six days, you're not working well for yourself. You need to make sure and build rest
  • 00:05:29.070 --> 00:05:35.100
  • into the rhythms of your life.
  • 00:05:35.120 --> 00:05:37.100
  • So Jesus told his disciples,guys we need to come apart.Someone said, if you don't
  • 00:05:37.120 --> 00:05:42.130
  • come apart to rest,you'll come apart at the seams.And so it's really powerful to see
  • 00:05:42.150 --> 00:05:48.100
  • Jesus leading in that way.The funny thing was, though, someone posted on TMZ
  • 00:05:48.120 --> 00:05:52.150
  • where they were resting, you know, where they were going to hang out, and-- you think
  • 00:05:52.170 --> 00:05:56.020
  • I'm joking--everybody showed up. Thousands and thousands and thousands of people
  • 00:05:56.040 --> 00:05:59.290
  • showed up where Jesus and his disciples were trying to rest.
  • 00:06:00.030 --> 00:06:03.270
  • That'll happen when you heal people. They'll tell all their sick friends, you know.And so
  • 00:06:03.290 --> 00:06:08.200
  • everyone wanted to get healed, everyone wanted to get helped. And the disciples were
  • 00:06:08.220 --> 00:06:12.150
  • irritated, but Jesus was moved with compassion. So he began to speak to them, began
  • 00:06:12.170 --> 00:06:17.110
  • to minister to them. And then The day grew late, so the disciples said, OK guys, you've
  • 00:06:17.130 --> 00:06:21.000
  • had your sermon, get out of here.
  • 00:06:21.020 --> 00:06:23.000
  • And Jesus said, but they're hungry. And Peter and the disciples were like, be that as it
  • 00:06:23.020 --> 00:06:27.160
  • may, I didn't bring any food for them, you didn't bring any food for them, Costco's
  • 00:06:27.180 --> 00:06:31.250
  • closed. I don't know what you want us to do for thousands of- There's 5.000 men, plus
  • 00:06:31.270 --> 00:06:36.270
  • women and children. 20.000 people is the estimate of what was actually in the crowd on that day.
  • 00:06:36.290 --> 00:06:42.170
  • And so here's what happened. Jesus said, well,what do you have? Where we tend to
  • 00:06:42.190 --> 00:06:47.050
  • focus on what we don't have, Jesus will always ask, what do you have? You think, I
  • 00:06:47.070 --> 00:06:51.020
  • can't do something great because I don't have this opportunity, haven't been given that
  • 00:06:51.040 --> 00:06:54.160
  • chance, don't have this resource. Well,God always wants to work within your means.
  • 00:06:54.180 --> 00:06:58.110
  • He always wants to work within the realm of what he has-- he knows what he gave
  • 00:06:58.130 --> 00:07:02.230
  • you, and he knows what he didn't give you.
  • 00:07:02.250 --> 00:07:04.260
  • The elements of a miracle are always within your reach. They're always there for you
  • 00:07:04.280 --> 00:07:10.010
  • to grab.And so he says,what do you have? And of course,you know, they said, well,
  • 00:07:10.030 --> 00:07:14.280
  • there's this kid,he's got a Lunchable. He brought a Lunchable. His mom packed him
  • 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:19.110
  • up a Capri Sun, a couple of those Ritz crackers and some of that gross lunch meat,
  • 00:07:19.130 --> 00:07:24.080
  • right? Five loaves and two fish
  • 00:07:24.100 --> 00:07:28.040
  • But then the disciple said, what are they among so many? Jesus said, bring them to
  • 00:07:28.060 --> 00:07:34.010
  • me.And he blessed what they brought him. He'll always bless what you bring him. The
  • 00:07:34.030 --> 00:07:38.170
  • problem is, some of us despise what we have because it's not a lot, so we don't bring
  • 00:07:38.190 --> 00:07:40.280
  • him anything, but that gives him nothing to bless. But if you give him what you do have
  • 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:45.120
  • and start there, he can make more out of it. He can begin to multiply what's put into his hand in faith.
  • 00:07:45.140 --> 00:07:50.200
  • Some of you didn't give in the offering today because you don't have a lot. But instead,
  • 00:07:50.220 --> 00:07:54.170
  • you could have chosen to give out of your little and seen the blessing of God upon
  • 00:07:54.190 --> 00:07:59.000
  • your little. And he'll work with What you give him. So the blessing started with that tiny
  • 00:07:59.020 --> 00:08:03.000
  • little insignificant gift.And so of course, you know the story-- spoiler alert-- he fed
  • 00:08:03.020 --> 00:08:06.290
  • everybody to where they were glutted.
  • 00:08:07.010 --> 00:08:10.080
  • And there were 12 baskets of fragments left over, a doggy bag for each of the 12
  • 00:08:10.100 --> 00:08:16.240
  • disciples.They were pumped. They're like, yeah. Each of 'em. That's how
  • 00:08:16.260 --> 00:08:23.140
  • I read the Bible. [GROWLING] And-- pray for me.
  • 00:08:23.160 --> 00:08:29.240
  • So now they've eaten,the people are fired up, and Jesus says, OK, now we're going
  • 00:08:29.260 --> 00:08:35.220
  • to--while they're all lying there in a food coma,we're going to make our break, right?
  • 00:08:35.240 --> 00:08:39.160
  • So he sends the disciples down to the dock, he loads them up in a boat with a basket,
  • 00:08:39.180 --> 00:08:46.000
  • each of them. And I don't have time to preach about this,but I would preach if I had
  • 00:08:46.020 --> 00:08:49.270
  • time about how they got into a storm and they started freaking out, but all they needed
  • 00:08:49.290 --> 00:08:54.230
  • to do when they were freaking out is look at their feet.At their feet, where there was a
  • 00:08:54.250 --> 00:08:58.210
  • basket of fragments from the last miracle.
  • 00:08:58.230 --> 00:09:01.070
  • And if they would have looked down at the remainder of the last miracle, they wouldn't
  • 00:09:01.090 --> 00:09:05.140
  • have doubted in this one, because they would remember he was faithful back then,
  • 00:09:05.160 --> 00:09:08.240
  • he's going to be faithful today. And some of you, the problem is you're forgetful about
  • 00:09:08.260 --> 00:09:12.220
  • what he did last time,so you get into a pickle, and you forget to Look at the basket of
  • 00:09:12.240 --> 00:09:16.290
  • fragments of what he did last time. You're stressing out because of this new situation.
  • 00:09:17.010 --> 00:09:21.020
  • All you need to do is keep some scraps in a doggy bag from what he did back then,
  • 00:09:21.040 --> 00:09:25.140
  • and you could say, if he was faithful three years ago, he'll be faithful today.
  • 00:09:25.160 --> 00:09:29.050
  • If you got the doggy bag from the last miracle,you won't have to worry about this one.
  • 00:09:29.070 --> 00:09:33.210
  • But I don't got time to preach about that, so I won't.Instead, I'll say that Jesus went to
  • 00:09:33.230 --> 00:09:39.280
  • pray while the disciples were stuck in a storm that he sent them through. And I wish I
  • 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:45.180
  • had time to preach about how he said, go to the other side. And they began to think
  • 00:09:45.200 --> 00:09:49.050
  • they were going to die in the middle. But if he told you to go to the other side, you're
  • 00:09:49.070 --> 00:09:52.010
  • never going to die in the middle. He gave you within his command the enabling to do
  • 00:09:52.030 --> 00:09:57.070
  • what he told you to do.Again, I don't have time to preach about that miracle. Quit
  • 00:09:57.090 --> 00:10:01.110
  • trying to make me. I'm not going to do it.
  • 00:10:01.130 --> 00:10:03.120
  • So they finally make it to the other side of the Sea of Galilee and Jesus decides it's
  • 00:10:03.140 --> 00:10:10.000
  • about time to come with them. So, you know the story.I don't have time to get into it.
  • 00:10:10.020 --> 00:10:14.240
  • He crossed the water,too,but he did so on foot. Across the water. He walked on water,
  • 00:10:14.260 --> 00:10:23.080
  • as one does when one is the son of God. So he goes across the sea, the disciples
  • 00:10:23.100 --> 00:10:30.190
  • went across the sea in a boat, Jesus went across the lake on a water skiing trip. No
  • 00:10:30.210 --> 00:10:35.200
  • boat, just water skiing. No skis, just water walking.
  • 00:10:35.220 --> 00:10:38.260
  • And the disciples and Jesus are now on the other side, OK? And they're all excited
  • 00:10:38.280 --> 00:10:45.190
  • because they're going to get their much needed rest and relaxation. But the people
  • 00:10:45.210 --> 00:10:49.110
  • who had had a delicious meal are now waking up from their food coma and they're
  • 00:10:49.130 --> 00:10:54.050
  • like, we need some more food, and they took all the leftovers with them. We need
  • 00:10:54.070 --> 00:10:57.250
  • some more food,we're hungry. So they start looking for Jesus because he's the guy
  • 00:10:57.270 --> 00:11:01.040
  • who gives out fish tacos. Flatbread and fish. What would you think? I'd put a little
  • 00:11:01.060 --> 00:11:06.250
  • sriracha on it and call it a day, guys. That's what I'm saying.
  • 00:11:06.270 --> 00:11:09.000
  • So I never got excited about five loaves and two fish till I started thinking about it.It's
  • 00:11:09.020 --> 00:11:13.150
  • pretty much fish tacos.And then I was more excited about it. So they're looking for
  • 00:11:13.170 --> 00:11:18.050
  • Jesus. They go down.They had seen the disciples leaving the boat, but they knew
  • 00:11:18.070 --> 00:11:21.160
  • Jesus was up on the mountain praying. And they thought he was still up there. But
  • 00:11:21.180 --> 00:11:24.020
  • they checked, he's gone.
  • 00:11:24.040 --> 00:11:25.290
  • They go down to the dock and they say, hey, did Jesus come across? They go, no, no,
  • 00:11:26.010 --> 00:11:27.270
  • he didn't come across.No more boats left after the disciples. And so all the people,
  • 00:11:27.290 --> 00:11:33.190
  • thousands of people, get into boats, and they cross the lake, too. And when they get to
  • 00:11:33.210 --> 00:11:37.180
  • the other side, they see Jesus and the disciples are there, and they rush up to Jesus
  • 00:11:37.210 --> 00:11:41.000
  • and they say, how did you get here? How did you get here? That's all they want to
  • 00:11:41.020 --> 00:11:43.290
  • know. How did you get here?
  • 00:11:44.010 --> 00:11:46.020
  • And now we're ready. We're all caught up. Look at it. It's in John 6:26. Jesus answered
  • 00:11:46.040 --> 00:11:50.270
  • them and said,"most assuredly, I say to you, you seek me not because you saw the
  • 00:11:50.290 --> 00:11:57.180
  • signs,but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not--" someone say do not--
  • 00:11:57.200 --> 00:12:05.000
  • "--labor for the food which perishes, but labor for the food which endures to everlasting
  • 00:12:05.020 --> 00:12:11.000
  • life, which the son of man will give you because God the father has set his seal on him.
  • 00:12:11.020 --> 00:12:17.030
  • Then they said to him,'what shall we do that we may work the works of God?' Jesus
  • 00:12:17.050 --> 00:12:22.240
  • answered and said to them,'this is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he
  • 00:12:22.260 --> 00:12:28.050
  • sent.' Therefore they said to him, what sign will you perform, then, that we may see it
  • 00:12:28.070 --> 00:12:33.170
  • and believe you? What work will you do?'"
  • 00:12:33.190 --> 00:12:35.160
  • This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard anybody say in my entire life. If you do
  • 00:12:35.180 --> 00:12:39.220
  • something awesome,we'll believe in you. He just fed them miraculously with the little
  • 00:12:39.240 --> 00:12:44.080
  • kid's lunchbox.What more proof do you need? You know, the quest to get proof in
  • 00:12:44.100 --> 00:12:49.150
  • order to believe, that's one of those common things. If I saw God do a miracle, then I'd
  • 00:12:49.170 --> 00:12:52.280
  • believe. No, you wouldn't. Jesus said, if you saw someone rise from the dead, you
  • 00:12:53.000 --> 00:12:57.200
  • wouldn't believe, if you didn't believe at the preaching of the word.

  • 00:13:42.150 --> 00:13:47.030
  • You see, you have to have faith that comes by hearing,and hearing by the word of
  • 00:13:47.050 --> 00:13:51.110
  • God. So these people who had seen a sign still didn't believe him because the sign
  • 00:13:51.130 --> 00:13:55.230
  • only exists to point to the sermon. And if you don't listen in response to the sermon, no
  • 00:13:55.250 --> 00:14:00.150
  • matter how many signs you see and no matter how many miraculous things that God
  • 00:14:00.170 --> 00:14:03.200
  • does, you'll find a way to write it off or to still keep persisting in your unbelief.
  • 00:14:03.220 --> 00:14:09.020
  • So they got a sign.What do they want? Another sign.They got a meal. What do they
  • 00:14:09.040 --> 00:14:13.140
  • want? Another meal.How do you know that's what they want? Well, notice what they
  • 00:14:13.160 --> 00:14:16.000
  • suggest him to do.We'll believe you if-- look at this, verse 31 -- "our fathers ate the
  • 00:14:16.020 --> 00:14:20.200
  • manna in the desert. As it is written, he gave them bread from heaven to eat." Oh,
  • 00:14:20.220 --> 00:14:24.210
  • that's tricky of them.Why?The bread from heaven in the wilderness wanderings lasted
  • 00:14:24.230 --> 00:14:29.150
  • 40 years. So they're being sly. They're like, that meal was great, but if you give us
  • 00:14:29.170 --> 00:14:33.270
  • bread for 40 years, then we'll really believe that you're-- well played. Well played, guys.
  • 00:14:33.290 --> 00:14:39.100
  • Verse 32, "Jesus said to them, 'most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you
  • 00:14:39.120 --> 00:14:45.000
  • the bread from heaven.My father gives you the true bread from heaven, for the bread
  • 00:14:45.020 --> 00:14:49.210
  • of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.'" Then they said
  • 00:14:49.230 --> 00:14:55.020
  • to him, that's awesome,Lord, give us that kind of bread always. Give us that bread
  • 00:14:55.040 --> 00:14:59.130
  • always. If there's living bread we don't know about, give us that bread. "Jesus said to
  • 00:14:59.150 --> 00:15:03.160
  • them, 'I am the bread of life. And he who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who
  • 00:15:03.180 --> 00:15:11.080
  • believes in me shall never thirst.'"
  • 00:15:11.100 --> 00:15:17.050
  • There's something magnificent about the number seven. There's just something about
  • 00:15:17.070 --> 00:15:24.040
  • that number.It's everywhere. There are seven continents on this planet. There are
  • 00:15:24.060 --> 00:15:29.210
  • seven wonders of the ancient world. You probably know that, within the musical scale,
  • 00:15:29.230 --> 00:15:35.260
  • there are seven notes,the Western scale anyhow. And inside of every rainbow, there
  • 00:15:35.280 --> 00:15:40.160
  • are seven colors.
  • 00:15:40.180 --> 00:15:43.120
  • Seven,seven,seven.Seven books in the Harry Potter series. Whoa. Whoa, seven. It's
  • 00:15:43.140 --> 00:15:49.280
  • every--there are seven bones in the neck of almost all mammals. There are seven
  • 00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:55.240
  • spots commonly found on any given ladybug. Seven is everywhere, even within you and within me.
  • 00:15:55.260 --> 00:16:03.280
  • They say that seven is the number of days it takes for your skin to regenerate itself.
  • 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:09.230
  • Every seven days,you have a new layer of skin covering your entire body, your
  • 00:16:09.250 --> 00:16:13.150
  • epidermis. A whole new layer of skin is on the outside of you And what happened to
  • 00:16:13.170 --> 00:16:17.240
  • the old layer?You vacuumed it up. You dusted it up.
  • 00:16:17.260 --> 00:16:21.210
  • The majority of dust found in any building is all human skin that's no longer needed
  • 00:16:21.230 --> 00:16:29.110
  • because,like a snake, you just shluffed it off. Every sevendays. But your body-- that
  • 00:16:29.130 --> 00:16:35.190
  • was gross, right--your body is an entirely new version of itself in totality every seven
  • 00:16:35.210 --> 00:16:41.180
  • years,for every single cell in your body is basically brand-new every seven years. So
  • 00:16:41.200 --> 00:16:51.010
  • you're a brand-new you every time seven years goes by.
  • 00:16:51.030 --> 00:16:54.180
  • Your memory, too, has a connection to the number seven. They say seven is this
  • 00:16:54.200 --> 00:17:00.270
  • magical number that represents the upper limits of our working memory, or what they
  • 00:17:00.290 --> 00:17:08.000
  • refer to as channel capacity. What does that mean?Here's what it means. If I rattled off
  • 00:17:08.020 --> 00:17:13.140
  • a series of letters or numbers, almost every one of you would be fine up to seven plus
  • 00:17:13.160 --> 00:17:19.100
  • or minus two. Some people hang on till nine, some people drop out at five. Any of you
  • 00:17:19.120 --> 00:17:25.280
  • like, that's me?Simple Simon, never did well at that. You know that game, you know,
  • 00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:29.060
  • where-- remember those games? You had to, like, remember the colors. Red, blue,
  • 00:17:29.080 --> 00:17:33.160
  • five, green, five, five. I don't know. I don't know. Pull it, bop it, tap it, punch it.
  • 00:17:33.180 --> 00:17:39.260
  • So seven is basically how many we can hang onto, which is why there are seven
  • 00:17:39.280 --> 00:17:48.160
  • numbers in every phone number in America. They experimented with other numbers,
  • 00:17:48.180 --> 00:17:54.070
  • but they've found that if they went up to eight, the amount of wrong numbers when
  • 00:17:54.090 --> 00:18:00.280
  • people were calling each other, if that's still a thing that is done when you're not texting
  • 00:18:01.000 --> 00:18:05.110
  • each other,right,that if they went up to eight, the amount of wrong dials skyrocketed.
  • 00:18:05.130 --> 00:18:11.040
  • And the Bell Telephone Company, when they were deciding this, they wanted the
  • 00:18:11.060 --> 00:18:15.260
  • biggest number possible so that they would have to have fewer area codes, because
  • 00:18:15.280 --> 00:18:20.080
  • you know how exponential increase works in compound interest. Just even adding one
  • 00:18:20.100 --> 00:18:25.020
  • more number to it opens up a whole new plethora of possibilities. But they had to stick
  • 00:18:25.040 --> 00:18:30.290
  • with seven because most of us can hang on up to seven.
  • 00:18:31.010 --> 00:18:35.240
  • The psychologist George Miller in his prolific and very well widely respected essay,
  • 00:18:35.260 --> 00:18:41.290
  • Seven: The Magic Number Plus or Minus Two-- that's the title of it-- had this to say. He
  • 00:18:42.010 --> 00:18:48.010
  • said, "there seems to be some limitation built into us either by learning or by the design
  • 00:18:48.030 --> 00:18:53.040
  • of our nervous systems, a limit that keeps our channel capacities in this general range
  • 00:18:53.060 --> 00:18:58.030
  • of seven. Seven is also a number that you find magnificently displayed across the
  • 00:18:58.050 --> 00:19:04.120
  • entire panorama of scripture, rom Genesis, where seven represents the prototypical
  • 00:19:04.140 --> 00:19:11.010
  • week, seven days to the week, six and one, six days of work, and then that day of
  • 00:19:11.030 --> 00:19:17.240
  • resting, and all the way across to Revelation, where you have sevens everywhere.
  • 00:19:17.260 --> 00:19:23.110
  • There are seven letters to seven churches, there are seven trumpets, there are seven
  • 00:19:23.130 --> 00:19:27.020
  • seals, there are seven bowls. In fact, seven shows up in the Bible so often someone
  • 00:19:27.040 --> 00:19:32.260
  • added them up and,would you bel0 instances of the number-- God,
  • 00:19:32.280 --> 00:19:37.120
  • you're just showing off now, right-- in the Bible. And one of those sevens is seven times
  • 00:19:37.140 --> 00:19:46.100
  • in the Gospel of John Jesus chose to identify himself to us by telling us who he is.And
  • 00:19:46.120 --> 00:19:55.020
  • one of those we just read.
  • 00:19:55.040 --> 00:19:57.050
  • He is the bread of life. And what we're going to be doing in these magical days is we're
  • 00:19:57.070 --> 00:20:02.240
  • going to be, a week at a time, grabbing one of these statements where Jesus says
  • 00:20:02.260 --> 00:20:07.070
  • who he is in his own words-- this isn't someone else talking about him, this isn't like
  • 00:20:07.090 --> 00:20:10.250
  • here's what I think Jesus is like, this is Jesus in his own words. This is Jesus from his
  • 00:20:10.270 --> 00:20:15.180
  • own mouth. And he's going to tell us seven times who he is. And the seven in the
  • 00:20:15.200 --> 00:20:20.150
  • scripture represents completion or fullness, like a full week or like a full
  • 00:20:20.170 --> 00:20:24.290
  • the fullness of the musical scale. He's going to tell us fully in his mouth who he is.
  • 00:20:25.010 --> 00:20:29.110
  • And I love that he didn't choose 11, I love that he didn't choose 19. I love that he said,
  • 00:20:29.130 --> 00:20:33.080
  • no,I want you to be able to hang on to this. You'd forget if I told you 14 things about
  • 00:20:33.100 --> 00:20:37.210
  • me, but I think you'll be able to hang on to the fact that I am the bread of life, I am the
  • 00:20:37.230 --> 00:20:41.080
  • true vine,I am the door,I am the shepherd, I am the way, the truth, and the life. I am,
  • 00:20:41.100 --> 00:20:46.290
  • I am, I am, I am the resurrection and the life.
  • 00:20:47.010 --> 00:20:51.200
  • I think we'll save that one for Easter Sunday, seven weeks from today, and we'll
  • 00:20:51.220 --> 00:20:57.030
  • celebrate the risen, triumphant, magnificent,resplendent king who saved us from our
  • 00:20:57.050 --> 00:21:05.070
  • sins and has our names written on the palm of his hand. Seven times.The upper limit
  • 00:21:05.090 --> 00:21:11.230
  • of our working memory, our channel capacity. Jesus says, you want to know who I
  • 00:21:11.250 --> 00:21:17.100
  • am? Here's who I am.
  • 00:21:17.120 --> 00:21:19.290
  • And we're starting with I am the bread of life, which is so important for us to delve into
  • 00:21:20.010 --> 00:21:24.110
  • because, number one-- jot this down-- we tend to focus only on what we eat
  • 00:21:24.130 --> 00:21:30.110
  • physically. That's why I think he began with this one, because he was speaking to a
  • 00:21:30.130 --> 00:21:35.150
  • group of people who pretty much only were in it for what they could get out of it, for
  • 00:21:35.170 --> 00:21:39.240
  • their stomach.They followed him across the lake, and all they wanted was more food.
  • 00:21:39.260 --> 00:21:45.150
  • Jesus just called them out. He said, y'all are a bunch of moochers. You don't want
  • 00:21:45.170 --> 00:21:48.260
  • nothing to do with me.You don't care about me. You only want more food. You only
  • 00:21:48.280 --> 00:21:56.070
  • want more food. Now, food is important.Otherwise, he wouldn't have given them food
  • 00:21:56.090 --> 00:21:59.230
  • at all. Food is important. It's important to feed people. But again, Jesus used the
  • 00:21:59.250 --> 00:22:04.240
  • giving of the food to point to something that was more important, something below the surface.
  • 00:22:04.260 --> 00:22:10.140
  • Here's the thing you need to know-- the sign was only meant to point to the sermon.
  • 00:22:10.160 --> 00:22:15.220
  • The sermon was full of the substance. And they ignored the sermon and only cared
  • 00:22:15.240 --> 00:22:20.200
  • about the sign. But imagine how silly that would be if you saw a sign in your thirst,
  • 00:22:20.220 --> 00:22:25.060
  • maybe walking through an airport, you saw a sign that said drinking fountain this way,
  • 00:22:25.080 --> 00:22:28.290
  • and you went up to the sign and started licking it. That wouldn't satisfy your need.
  • 00:22:29.010 --> 00:22:35.160
  • The sign is meant to point to the sermon. If you went-- to use another airport
  • 00:22:35.180 --> 00:22:40.210
  • analogy-- that's all I have,it's really all I know--if you went to an airport and said,
  • 00:22:40.230 --> 00:22:46.170
  • flight number 6545 to LAX right here, and there was a sign that said that and you sat
  • 00:22:46.190 --> 00:22:51.220
  • in a chair and wondered when you were going to be in LAX, no, the sign was pointing
  • 00:22:51.240 --> 00:22:55.010
  • to the gate where you enter a plane that's going to take you somewhere. The sign
  • 00:22:55.030 --> 00:22:58.130
  • doesn't get you there,it just tells you where to get to where you need to be so you
  • 00:22:58.150 --> 00:23:02.060
  • can get to where you want to be. You see what I'm saying?
  • 00:23:02.080 --> 00:23:04.020
  • And all of Jesus' miracles, they were merely signs.He said that Moses' pouring down
  • 00:23:04.040 --> 00:23:10.120
  • of bread from heaven,the manna that fell from heaven, that was merely a sign. That
  • 00:23:10.140 --> 00:23:15.020
  • wasn't supernatural bread, that was just regular bread that was meant to illustrate the
  • 00:23:15.040 --> 00:23:19.110
  • fact that there is coming a day when real bread is going to come to heaven. And that
  • 00:23:19.130 --> 00:23:23.190
  • day is now, and you're missing it because all you care about is getting more bread.
  • 00:23:23.210 --> 00:23:27.270
  • [GOBBLING NOISES]All you care about is what you're putting into your stomach.
  • 00:23:27.290 --> 00:23:33.150
  • It's easy to live that way because the needs of our physical bodies are so pressing. And
  • 00:23:33.170 --> 00:23:39.130
  • we can't see our spirits. nd we've never been to heaven, and we've never gotten to
  • 00:23:39.150 --> 00:23:43.120
  • see hell. So all we see is this physical world that we are trapped in. But let me just tell
  • 00:23:43.140 --> 00:23:48.170
  • you something-- it's all temporary. It's all temporary.
  • 00:23:48.190 --> 00:23:52.290
  • Not only are you a different version of yourself every seven years, so your body clearly
  • 00:23:53.010 --> 00:23:58.080
  • isn't even you, it's just a house you live in that's in the process of becoming a different
  • 00:23:58.100 --> 00:24:02.000
  • one you're going live in seven years from now, but you yourself are your soul because
  • 00:24:02.020 --> 00:24:06.100
  • the day's going to come when not only is your mom going to stop vacuuming up your
  • 00:24:06.120 --> 00:24:09.230
  • last layer of skin that's now turned into dust, but your entire body is going to turn to dust after you die.
  • 00:24:09.250 --> 00:24:15.290
  • Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. But you are not your body. You have a body. You are a
  • 00:24:17.040 --> 00:24:25.230
  • soul. And when your body turns to ash or dust, you are going to be standing before
  • 00:24:25.250 --> 00:24:30.220
  • God. And in Jesus' words, from there it's either judgment or it's life. It's blessing or
  • 00:24:30.240 --> 00:24:37.040
  • cursing. And he's saying, I'm the difference between those two things, because food
  • 00:24:37.060 --> 00:24:42.120
  • that you eat now, it can only give you energy. But it's going to perish. Food spoils, it
  • 00:24:42.140 --> 00:24:49.080
  • goes bad. You eat it, it's eliminated, and you're hungry again.
  • 00:24:49.100 --> 00:24:52.170
  • And isn't that a picture of how so many people live on this earth? Looking to get high
  • 00:24:52.190 --> 00:24:56.150
  • needing to get high again. Looking to get wasted, waking up hungover, needing to get
  • 00:24:56.170 --> 00:25:01.120
  • drunk again.No one ever gets drunk and goes, that's it, I never need to get drunk
  • 00:25:01.140 --> 00:25:05.110
  • again. That was the greatest experience of my life, I never need that again. Next Friday,
  • 00:25:05.130 --> 00:25:09.000
  • want to get drunk?No, I was drunk last Friday. It was awesome. Never need to do that again.
  • 00:25:09.020 --> 00:25:12.230
  • No, the payoff is needing more. And you sleep with someone, you're swiping right,
  • 00:25:12.250 --> 00:25:18.010
  • swiping wrong and all--and what's the payoff? The payoff is needing to do that again
  • 00:25:18.030 --> 00:25:22.150
  • and again and again.That's why they say sexual dysfunction and addiction is
  • 00:25:22.170 --> 00:25:26.290
  • skyrocketing along with those who are utilizing the apps that facilitate casual sexual
  • 00:25:27.010 --> 00:25:32.200
  • encounters.And people are deleting and reinstalling the app compulsively. Never again,
  • 00:25:32.220 --> 00:25:37.030
  • one more time, never again, one more time, never again, one more time, never again, one more time.
  • 00:25:37.050 --> 00:25:42.060
  • The payoff for taking in is needed to take in again. And so that's the mistake, to only
  • 00:25:42.080 --> 00:25:47.010
  • focus on what we eat.What we need to be focused more on is not just what we eat, but
  • 00:25:47.030 --> 00:25:48.260
  • what we need.What we need. And that is bread of a different sort. That's bread of a
  • 00:25:48.280 --> 00:25:58.140
  • different kind entirely. The most important eating we do is spiritually. Themost important
  • 00:25:58.160 --> 00:26:04.270
  • eating we do is spiritually.
  • 00:26:04.290 --> 00:26:06.210
  • Listen to me very carefully. What you're truly hungry for is not more followers on
  • 00:26:06.230 --> 00:26:11.030
  • Instagram, it's not more money in the bank account, it's not fine meals and fancy trips.
  • 00:26:11.050 --> 00:26:17.070
  • It's not any of the things that, in this body, we hunger for. What you truly are hungry for
  • 00:26:17.090 --> 00:26:22.040
  • is God. And that's why Jesus said-- listen to me-- I am the bread of life.
  • 00:26:22.060 --> 00:26:31.130
  • You are speaking to me asking me for more bread and more fish, but you should be
  • 00:26:31.150 --> 00:26:36.160
  • asking me to give you what will truly satisfy the ache of your soul-- a relationship with
  • 00:26:36.180 --> 00:26:41.270
  • me. We don't need something from God, we just need God. And so often we do the
  • 00:26:41.290 --> 00:26:48.180
  • same thing they did. Here, listen. This is the guy who framed the world with his breath.
  • 00:26:48.200 --> 00:26:54.080
  • Every star in the sky,it came because of the creative energy coming from Jesus' mouth.
  • 00:26:54.100 --> 00:26:59.270
  • Through the power of God's spirit, everything that was made was made, and at the end
  • 00:26:59.290 --> 00:27:04.040
  • of the world is going to be remade in perfection, where there's not going to be sin or
  • 00:27:04.060 --> 00:27:07.140
  • disease or death or decay anymore.
  • 00:27:07.160 --> 00:27:09.200
  • That's all what's in store for . And it's going to happen because of Jesus. He's going
  • 00:27:09.220 --> 00:27:13.210
  • to rule and reign with a rod of iron. He's the one who's going to return. He's the one
  • 00:27:13.230 --> 00:27:17.240
  • who's even now working in people's lives, seeking to show himself kind toward them.
  • 00:27:17.260 --> 00:27:22.070
