  • James Merritt: We're living in a culture where so many people
  • 00:00:05.100 --> 00:00:06.170
  • are saying to us as the church, "I live in a big house.
  • 00:00:06.180 --> 00:00:12.280
  • I drive a nice car. I've got expensive jewelry.
  • 00:00:12.290 --> 00:00:17.180
  • I'm in a great relationship. I've got healthy children.
  • 00:00:17.190 --> 00:00:21.280
  • So, tell me again, why I need God."
  • 00:00:21.290 --> 00:00:25.170
  • announcer: Teaching people everywhere who Jesus is and why
  • 00:00:26.120 --> 00:00:29.050
  • they need him, this is "Touching Lives" with James Merritt.
  • 00:00:29.060 --> 00:00:32.140
  • James: Well, this month we're in a series that we're calling
  • 00:00:33.250 --> 00:00:36.230
  • "Music To My Ears," and what we've been doing, if you will,
  • 00:00:36.240 --> 00:00:40.130
  • is listening to some of the most beautiful songs
  • 00:00:40.140 --> 00:00:43.150
  • and most beautiful lyrics that have ever been written
  • 00:00:43.160 --> 00:00:46.090
  • in a book called Psalms.
  • 00:00:46.100 --> 00:00:48.230
  • And what you're gonna find today in this 67th psalm is not only
  • 00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:52.220
  • these incredible blessings, the incredible blessings of God that
  • 00:00:52.230 --> 00:00:56.080
  • God gives us every day, but you're gonna find that
  • 00:00:56.090 --> 00:00:58.230
  • God's blessing is a gift that keeps on giving.
  • 00:00:58.240 --> 00:01:01.280
  • So, what I want to do today, four things
  • 00:01:01.290 --> 00:01:04.260
  • that the blessing of God gives us.
  • 00:01:04.270 --> 00:01:07.140
  • Number one, God's blessing gives us grace.
  • 00:01:07.150 --> 00:01:11.210
  • God's blessing gives us grace.
  • 00:01:11.220 --> 00:01:14.120
  • Now, when you think about blessings, if I were to say
  • 00:01:14.130 --> 00:01:17.000
  • to you, have you been blessed?
  • 00:01:17.010 --> 00:01:18.140
  • Can you count your blessings?
  • 00:01:18.150 --> 00:01:20.100
  • Automatically, you would start thinking about
  • 00:01:20.110 --> 00:01:22.160
  • one of three things.
  • 00:01:22.170 --> 00:01:24.030
  • So, we'll say, "Oh, yes, I've been blessed.
  • 00:01:24.040 --> 00:01:25.250
  • You know, I live in a big house. I drive a nice car.
  • 00:01:25.260 --> 00:01:29.010
  • I wear elegant clothes.
  • 00:01:29.020 --> 00:01:31.020
  • I've got--I get a good paycheck every week.
  • 00:01:31.030 --> 00:01:33.030
  • I have expensive jewelry."
  • 00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:35.020
  • And so, we think about possessions but there's
  • 00:01:35.030 --> 00:01:37.120
  • also we think about position.
  • 00:01:37.130 --> 00:01:39.270
  • We think, "Oh, man, you know, I have been blessed.
  • 00:01:39.280 --> 00:01:41.260
  • I'm the president of my company, I'm the principal of my school,
  • 00:01:41.270 --> 00:01:45.010
  • I'm the provost of the university,
  • 00:01:45.020 --> 00:01:46.280
  • I'm the pastor of a church."
  • 00:01:46.290 --> 00:01:48.160
  • And those are all fine blessings, I admit that.
  • 00:01:48.170 --> 00:01:51.210
  • But this songwriter does us a favor.
  • 00:01:51.220 --> 00:01:54.100
  • He points out to us the greatest blessing we all enjoy,
  • 00:01:54.110 --> 00:01:59.030
  • the greatest blessing we all have, and that is not what
  • 00:01:59.040 --> 00:02:05.030
  • God gives us, but the God who gives to us.
  • 00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:10.290
  • The greatest blessing is God himself.
  • 00:02:11.130 --> 00:02:14.130
  • So, he begins with this verse in verse 1.
  • 00:02:14.140 --> 00:02:17.030
  • He says, "May God be gracious,"
  • 00:02:17.040 --> 00:02:19.050
  • there's the word gracious, grace.
  • 00:02:19.060 --> 00:02:21.000
  • "May God be gracious to us, and bless us,
  • 00:02:21.010 --> 00:02:24.020
  • and make his face shine on us."
  • 00:02:24.030 --> 00:02:28.050
  • Now, what the psalmist is saying here is this, "Wake up and
  • 00:02:28.060 --> 00:02:31.090
  • smell the coffee, wake up and smell the roses."
  • 00:02:31.100 --> 00:02:33.210
  • The greatest blessing we enjoy every day is God Himself because
  • 00:02:33.220 --> 00:02:38.220
  • when you've got the face of God shining on you and the mouth
  • 00:02:38.230 --> 00:02:42.110
  • of God smiling at you, there's not a better place to be.
  • 00:02:42.120 --> 00:02:46.160
  • There's not a greater blessing that you can receive
  • 00:02:46.170 --> 00:02:48.240
  • than the blessing of God Himself.
  • 00:02:48.250 --> 00:02:51.180
  • You know, when I read that verse where the psalmist says,
  • 00:02:51.190 --> 00:02:53.220
  • "God, would you just make your face shine on me?"
  • 00:02:53.230 --> 00:02:57.110
  • You could just smile at somebody and you can make
  • 00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:00.290
  • their day just with a look.
  • 00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:04.050
  • You don't need any words, you can really give them a glow
  • 00:03:04.060 --> 00:03:07.180
  • and a shine just by the way you look at them.
  • 00:03:07.190 --> 00:03:10.160
  • And the reason why the psalmist is asking for God's blessing
  • 00:03:10.170 --> 00:03:14.080
  • in a shining face is because when God looks at you with
  • 00:03:14.090 --> 00:03:17.290
  • a shining face and God looks at you with a smile on his face, it
  • 00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:22.130
  • is signaling to you that God has just given you the two greatest
  • 00:03:22.140 --> 00:03:26.160
  • things we need from God, his love and his acceptance.
  • 00:03:26.170 --> 00:03:31.240
  • 'Cause you think about this, it doesn't matter who
  • 00:03:31.250 --> 00:03:37.080
  • else rejects you if God accepts you.
  • 00:03:37.090 --> 00:03:41.230
  • It doesn't matter who else hates you if God loves you.
  • 00:03:41.240 --> 00:03:46.030
  • So, when God's face shines upon me, I know what God is saying,
  • 00:03:46.040 --> 00:03:49.220
  • "James, I know your flaws, and there are many.
  • 00:03:49.230 --> 00:03:52.250
  • I know your faults, and there are many.
  • 00:03:52.260 --> 00:03:55.140
  • I know your failures, and they are many,
  • 00:03:55.150 --> 00:03:58.220
  • but I love you and I accept you."
  • 00:03:58.230 --> 00:04:02.130
  • Now, you may be thinking I'm trying to over spiritualize
  • 00:04:02.140 --> 00:04:04.180
  • God's blessings, and I'm not trying to ignore
  • 00:04:04.190 --> 00:04:06.150
  • all the material blessings that we have.
  • 00:04:06.160 --> 00:04:08.240
  • And we've all been so blessed in so many ways with people,
  • 00:04:08.250 --> 00:04:12.040
  • and with possessions, and with positions, and I get that.
  • 00:04:12.050 --> 00:04:16.000
  • But I would like to challenge you with this, I'd like
  • 00:04:16.010 --> 00:04:18.070
  • for you to think about something, not everything
  • 00:04:18.080 --> 00:04:21.000
  • that we consider a blessing is a blessing.
  • 00:04:21.010 --> 00:04:25.070
  • Not everything that we consider a blessing is a blessing.
  • 00:04:25.080 --> 00:04:31.120
  • Money can be a curse, and not a blessing.
  • 00:04:31.130 --> 00:04:36.050
  • Fame can be a curse, and not a blessing.
  • 00:04:36.060 --> 00:04:39.260
  • Popularity can be a curse, and not a blessing.
  • 00:04:39.270 --> 00:04:45.070
  • Position can be a curse, and not a blessing.
  • 00:04:45.080 --> 00:04:49.120
  • If the greatest spiritual blessing of all blessings is
  • 00:04:49.130 --> 00:04:52.220
  • the favor, and the love, and the acceptance of God, and if
  • 00:04:52.230 --> 00:04:55.260
  • the greatest blessing of all is knowing God, and if that
  • 00:04:55.270 --> 00:04:59.080
  • blessing does not lie as the foundation of all your other
  • 00:04:59.090 --> 00:05:02.090
  • blessings, including our possessions, including our
  • 00:05:02.100 --> 00:05:05.170
  • people, including our position, including our material things,
  • 00:05:05.180 --> 00:05:09.150
  • then all the other blessings can wind up being a curse.
  • 00:05:09.160 --> 00:05:14.290
  • Because let me tell you, we're living in a city right now.
  • 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:17.190
  • We're living in a community right here, and they
  • 00:05:17.200 --> 00:05:21.010
  • have substituted the blessings for the blesser.
  • 00:05:21.020 --> 00:05:27.060
  • They have substituted the gifts for the giver and when you do
  • 00:05:27.070 --> 00:05:32.070
  • that, what was meant to be a blessing actually becomes
  • 00:05:32.080 --> 00:05:36.100
  • a curse because I'm telling you, we're surrounded right now,
  • 00:05:36.110 --> 00:05:39.290
  • we're living in a culture where so many people are saying to us
  • 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:42.290
  • as the church, "I live in a big house.
  • 00:05:43.000 --> 00:05:48.110
  • I drive a nice car. I've got expensive jewelry.
  • 00:05:48.120 --> 00:05:53.020
  • I'm in a great relationship. I've got healthy children.
  • 00:05:53.030 --> 00:05:57.040
  • So, tell me again, why I need God."
  • 00:05:57.050 --> 00:06:01.240
  • And what is happened is the blessing has become
  • 00:06:01.250 --> 00:06:05.080
  • a curse because let me tell you the greatest
  • 00:06:05.090 --> 00:06:07.170
  • curse you'll ever live under.
  • 00:06:07.180 --> 00:06:09.150
  • The greatest curse you'll ever live under, is when you think
  • 00:06:09.160 --> 00:06:12.120
  • more about your blessings than you do the one that's blessed
  • 00:06:12.130 --> 00:06:15.080
  • you, when you think more about what's been given to you
  • 00:06:15.090 --> 00:06:18.140
  • than the one who gave it to you because I want you
  • 00:06:18.150 --> 00:06:21.140
  • to notice the purpose of God's blessings.
  • 00:06:21.150 --> 00:06:23.180
  • It's not what we think.
  • 00:06:23.190 --> 00:06:25.100
  • The psalmist says, "God, make your face shine upon us.
  • 00:06:25.110 --> 00:06:28.050
  • Be gracious to us." Why?
  • 00:06:28.060 --> 00:06:30.280
  • "So that your ways may be known on earth,
  • 00:06:30.290 --> 00:06:33.220
  • your salvation among all nations.
  • 00:06:33.230 --> 00:06:35.280
  • May the peoples praise you, God, may all the peoples praise you."
  • 00:06:35.290 --> 00:06:39.100
  • Listen, the purpose of God's blessing us is not so that other
  • 00:06:39.110 --> 00:06:43.080
  • people will marvel and go, "Man, look how God has blessed you."
  • 00:06:43.090 --> 00:06:47.280
  • The purpose of God's blessings is so that we will always
  • 00:06:47.290 --> 00:06:51.120
  • testify to other people, "This didn't come from me,
  • 00:06:51.130 --> 00:06:54.050
  • it came from him.
  • 00:06:54.060 --> 00:06:55.250
  • Don't brag on me, brag on him. Don't look at me, look at him.
  • 00:06:55.260 --> 00:07:00.100
  • I want him to have all the glory and all the honor so that you
  • 00:07:00.110 --> 00:07:05.100
  • can know the God that has blessed me as well."
  • 00:07:05.110 --> 00:07:08.210
  • In other words, we are not to be dams of God's blessing,
  • 00:07:08.220 --> 00:07:12.090
  • keeping it to ourselves.
  • 00:07:12.100 --> 00:07:15.090
  • We're to be reservoirs of God's blessings,
  • 00:07:15.100 --> 00:07:17.270
  • sharing it with others.
  • 00:07:17.280 --> 00:07:20.110
  • If you don't hear anything else I say, I want you to hear this,
  • 00:07:20.120 --> 00:07:23.140
  • God never blesses you so you will be blessed.
  • 00:07:23.150 --> 00:07:30.060
  • God blesses you so you will be a blessing to others, always.
  • 00:07:30.070 --> 00:07:36.270
  • That's what grace is all about.
  • 00:07:36.280 --> 00:07:39.140
  • God's blessing gives us grace so in turn, we can share
  • 00:07:39.150 --> 00:07:43.230
  • with others the best news of all that God wants to share
  • 00:07:43.240 --> 00:07:47.010
  • his grace with everyone because his blessing to the entire
  • 00:07:47.020 --> 00:07:51.050
  • human race is nothing less, nothing else, and nothing
  • 00:07:51.060 --> 00:07:55.050
  • but, his grace and his salvation.
  • 00:07:55.060 --> 00:07:58.190
  • So, number one, God's blessing gives us grace.
  • 00:07:58.200 --> 00:08:03.280
  • Now, I haven't told you anything you don't already know.
  • 00:08:03.290 --> 00:08:05.190
  • I mean, you probably heard this before.
  • 00:08:05.200 --> 00:08:07.050
  • I'm not the first man thought of that, won't be the last one.
  • 00:08:07.060 --> 00:08:11.070
  • But the second thing is a shocker because the psalmist
  • 00:08:11.080 --> 00:08:15.270
  • now tells us that God's blessing gives us guidance.
  • 00:08:15.280 --> 00:08:21.000
  • God's blessing gives us guidance.
  • 00:08:21.010 --> 00:08:23.250
  • Now, before I go any further, I'm gonna surprise you 'cause
  • 00:08:23.260 --> 00:08:26.130
  • it's not what you think because I want you to listen now to one
  • 00:08:26.140 --> 00:08:30.160
  • verse in this psalm that's both a comforting verse,
  • 00:08:30.170 --> 00:08:34.090
  • but it's a very shocking verse.
  • 00:08:34.100 --> 00:08:36.130
  • He says, "May the nations--"
  • 00:08:36.140 --> 00:08:39.220
  • Now, he's talking now to China, North Korea, Iraq, Iran,
  • 00:08:39.230 --> 00:08:47.090
  • Venezuela, Canada, the United States,
  • 00:08:47.100 --> 00:08:52.080
  • Cuba, Algeria, Kenya.
  • 00:08:52.090 --> 00:08:55.210
  • "May the nations be glad and sing for joy."
  • 00:08:55.220 --> 00:08:59.120
  • Now, watch this, "For you rule the peoples with equity,
  • 00:08:59.130 --> 00:09:04.070
  • and you guide the nations of the earth."
  • 00:09:04.080 --> 00:09:08.100
  • Now, let me just be honest, that sounds a little bit, "really?"
  • 00:09:08.110 --> 00:09:14.170
  • Because when I read the newspaper,
  • 00:09:14.180 --> 00:09:19.000
  • it doesn't seem like that's right.
  • 00:09:19.010 --> 00:09:23.110
  • When I go on the Internet, when I listen to CNN, or Fox,
  • 00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:27.150
  • or MSNBC, or ABC, or CBS, it doesn't look like
  • 00:09:27.160 --> 00:09:33.100
  • God's ruling too well, and it doesn't look like
  • 00:09:33.110 --> 00:09:37.100
  • God's guiding all that well.
  • 00:09:37.110 --> 00:09:40.180
  • And what the psalmist is saying is this at the end of the day,
  • 00:09:40.190 --> 00:09:45.090
  • presidents win and presidents lose, kings live and kings die,
  • 00:09:45.100 --> 00:09:51.140
  • dictators come and dictators go, but God's blessing
  • 00:09:51.150 --> 00:09:55.140
  • is he rules over the earth with equity.
  • 00:09:55.150 --> 00:09:59.140
  • He guides the nations of the earth.
  • 00:09:59.150 --> 00:10:02.110
  • Look, I'll be the first one to admit to you,
  • 00:10:02.120 --> 00:10:04.160
  • does it always look like it?
  • 00:10:04.170 --> 00:10:06.080
  • Absolutely not. Does it always sound like it?
  • 00:10:06.090 --> 00:10:08.180
  • Absolutely not. Does it always feel like it?
  • 00:10:08.190 --> 00:10:10.290
  • Absolutely not.
  • 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:12.220
  • But I can tell you with 100% confidence, every single nation,
  • 00:10:12.230 --> 00:10:18.060
  • every single government, and every single ruler that
  • 00:10:18.070 --> 00:10:22.060
  • is in place, God is using them to move the flow
  • 00:10:22.070 --> 00:10:26.210
  • of history where he wants it to go.
  • 00:10:26.220 --> 00:10:30.160
  • God is not just an American God.
  • 00:10:30.170 --> 00:10:34.170
  • God is the Russian God, and God is the North Korean God,
  • 00:10:34.180 --> 00:10:39.160
  • and God is the Chinese God, and God is the Iranian God,
  • 00:10:39.170 --> 00:10:44.010
  • and God is the French God because Jesus Christ is Lord
  • 00:10:44.020 --> 00:10:47.270
  • over every square inch of land.
  • 00:10:47.280 --> 00:10:50.010
  • And Jesus Christ is Lord over every single drop of water.
  • 00:10:50.020 --> 00:10:53.110
  • Listen, I don't care what Kim Jong Il thinks,
  • 00:10:53.120 --> 00:10:57.040
  • God's running the show.
  • 00:10:57.050 --> 00:10:59.240
  • God's calling the shots. God is making the terms.
  • 00:10:59.250 --> 00:11:03.280
  • And not only does the psalmist say he rules over the peoples
  • 00:11:03.290 --> 00:11:06.200
  • of the earth, watch this, he guides the nations.
  • 00:11:06.210 --> 00:11:10.010
  • Now, when we think of the guidance of God,
  • 00:11:10.020 --> 00:11:12.010
  • we always kind of bring it down to individuals, right?
  • 00:11:12.020 --> 00:11:14.160
  • And God does guide us, I'm grateful for that.
  • 00:11:14.170 --> 00:11:16.180
  • Yes, God guides us to light when we're in the dark.
  • 00:11:16.190 --> 00:11:19.200
  • God guides us to peace when we're in trouble.
  • 00:11:19.210 --> 00:11:22.000
  • God guides us to safety when we're in a storm.
  • 00:11:22.010 --> 00:11:24.180
  • But what the psalmist says is this, in God's own way, and
  • 00:11:24.190 --> 00:11:28.180
  • God's own time, using his own methods for his own purposes,
  • 00:11:28.190 --> 00:11:33.120
  • God guides the nations, every nation.
  • 00:11:33.130 --> 00:11:38.010
  • There's no nation out there running around on its own.
  • 00:11:38.020 --> 00:11:40.130
  • They may think they are, but they're not.
  • 00:11:40.140 --> 00:11:42.170
  • Now, this is where I'm gonna quit preaching and
  • 00:11:42.180 --> 00:11:44.130
  • I'm gonna meddle for 30 seconds.
  • 00:11:44.140 --> 00:11:48.180
  • If that is true, that's why even in our politics,
  • 00:11:48.190 --> 00:11:54.070
  • we ought to keep God in mind.
  • 00:11:54.080 --> 00:11:57.280
  • That's why we ought to pray for leaders of both parties.
  • 00:11:57.290 --> 00:12:01.110
  • That's why we pray for the president,
  • 00:12:01.120 --> 00:12:03.030
  • no matter who gets elected.
  • 00:12:03.040 --> 00:12:04.290
  • That's why we pray for people we agree with and
  • 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:07.000
  • pray for people that we don't agree with.
  • 00:12:07.010 --> 00:12:09.260
  • Because at the end of the day, God's guiding, God's moving,
  • 00:12:09.270 --> 00:12:14.200
  • God puts up one, God sets down another,
  • 00:12:14.210 --> 00:12:17.280
  • and that's why we ought to pray for the leaders of other
  • 00:12:17.290 --> 00:12:20.070
  • countries because God does guide.
  • 00:12:20.080 --> 00:12:23.000
  • Listen, I'm not trying to, you know, to call anybody to task
  • 00:12:23.010 --> 00:12:26.190
  • here, but I want to ask you an honest question.
  • 00:12:26.200 --> 00:12:30.190
  • Have you even one time, just once, pray
  • 00:12:30.200 --> 00:12:36.020
  • that Kim Jong Il would be saved?
  • 00:12:36.030 --> 00:12:40.010
  • Have you ever prayed even one time, rather than
  • 00:12:40.020 --> 00:12:42.190
  • look at him with--look, he's a--you know, I can say
  • 00:12:42.200 --> 00:12:45.190
  • this 'cause I'm not the president.
  • 00:12:45.200 --> 00:12:46.290
  • I'm not trying to win election.
  • 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:49.000
  • Man's evil, he's incarnately evil.
  • 00:12:49.010 --> 00:12:52.010
  • His whole regime is evil.
  • 00:12:52.020 --> 00:12:53.240
  • And I don't understand how all that works.
  • 00:12:53.250 --> 00:12:55.230
  • What I do know is this, God can save him too.
  • 00:12:55.240 --> 00:13:00.050
  • And if God is guiding the nations and God is ruling
  • 00:13:00.060 --> 00:13:02.280
  • overall, I know God would want us to pray even for him because
  • 00:13:02.290 --> 00:13:07.040
  • God's hand is on the steering wheel, and I don't think anybody
  • 00:13:07.050 --> 00:13:10.030
  • will deny this world will be 180 degrees different and
  • 00:13:10.040 --> 00:13:13.270
  • 180 degrees better if every nation really lived as if in God
  • 00:13:13.280 --> 00:13:18.010
  • we trust and really trusted the God that gave us who we are.
  • 00:13:18.020 --> 00:13:22.080
  • So, there's a blessing of God, not that just gives us grace,
  • 00:13:22.090 --> 00:13:27.040
  • but gives us guidance.
  • 00:13:27.050 --> 00:13:30.270
  • But the psalmist isn't finished.
  • 00:13:30.280 --> 00:13:34.000
  • He said, if you believe those two things are true, then
  • 00:13:34.010 --> 00:13:37.210
  • number three, God's blessing gives us gladness.
  • 00:13:37.220 --> 00:13:42.050
  • There ought to be a joy in our heart about
  • 00:13:42.060 --> 00:13:44.100
  • what we've just said.
  • 00:13:44.110 --> 00:13:45.200
  • Listen, anytime a fault or a phrase is repeated in the Bible,
  • 00:13:45.210 --> 00:13:48.140
  • this is just one way to kind of clue you on
  • 00:13:48.150 --> 00:13:50.080
  • how to interpret the Bible.
  • 00:13:50.090 --> 00:13:51.200
  • Whenever a word, or a thought, or a phrase is repeated in the
  • 00:13:51.210 --> 00:13:54.130
  • Bible, that is the Bible's way of putting an exclamation point.
  • 00:13:54.140 --> 00:13:58.220
  • That's the Bible's way putting something in
  • 00:13:58.230 --> 00:14:00.150
  • bold print, italicizing it, underscoring it.
  • 00:14:00.160 --> 00:14:04.020
  • It's the Bible's way of saying, pay attention to this.
  • 00:14:04.030 --> 00:14:08.100
  • Now, in this psalm, the psalmist does that very thing.
  • 00:14:08.110 --> 00:14:11.080
  • He repeats something twice.
  • 00:14:11.090 --> 00:14:13.090
  • Verse 3, "May the peoples praise you, God,
  • 00:14:13.100 --> 00:14:15.250
  • may all the peoples praise you."
  • 00:14:15.260 --> 00:14:17.190
  • Verse 5, "May the peoples praise You, God,
  • 00:14:17.200 --> 00:14:19.240
  • may all the peoples praise you."
  • 00:14:19.250 --> 00:14:22.160
  • Now, when something is said twice, listen twice as big.
  • 00:14:22.170 --> 00:14:26.020
  • When something you said twice, do it twice as hard.
  • 00:14:26.030 --> 00:14:29.050
  • In this case, what the psalmist is saying is, we
  • 00:14:29.060 --> 00:14:32.050
  • ought to praise God twice as much.
  • 00:14:32.060 --> 00:14:35.060
  • God's blessing ought to make us glad.
  • 00:14:35.070 --> 00:14:39.140
  • I don't care what else is going on in your life.
  • 00:14:39.150 --> 00:14:41.090
  • I mean, I do but I don't in this sense.
  • 00:14:41.100 --> 00:14:43.090
  • It doesn't really matter what else is going on in your
  • 00:14:43.100 --> 00:14:45.030
  • life right now that may not be a good thing.
  • 00:14:45.040 --> 00:14:50.080
  • If what he says about God is true and if you know that God,
  • 00:14:50.090 --> 00:14:53.010
  • you ought to be glad.
  • 00:14:53.020 --> 00:14:55.290
  • We ought to be glad that God rules all the people.
  • 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:59.270
  • We ought to be glad that God guides all the nations.
  • 00:14:59.280 --> 00:15:03.180
  • We ought to be glad that God's salvation
  • 00:15:03.190 --> 00:15:05.160
  • is available to everyone.
  • 00:15:05.170 --> 00:15:07.110
  • We ought to be glad for all the goodness that God
  • 00:15:07.120 --> 00:15:09.150
  • brings in our everyday life.
  • 00:15:09.160 --> 00:15:12.030
  • You know the--I didn't know this.
  • 00:15:12.040 --> 00:15:13.260
  • Did you know that the word "blessing," the word
  • 00:15:13.270 --> 00:15:16.270
  • "blessing" is used 415 times in the Old Testament?
  • 00:15:16.280 --> 00:15:25.160
  • In other words, that word on average is used
  • 00:15:25.170 --> 00:15:28.230
  • 12 times in every book in the Old Testament.
  • 00:15:28.240 --> 00:15:32.030
  • People sometimes wonder, "Why should I read
  • 00:15:32.040 --> 00:15:33.170
  • the Old Testament?"
  • 00:15:33.180 --> 00:15:34.270
  • I'll tell you why, it's a book of blessing.
  • 00:15:34.280 --> 00:15:36.140
  • It's a book of blessing.
  • 00:15:36.150 --> 00:15:37.250
  • There are so many references to the blessing of God.
  • 00:15:37.260 --> 00:15:40.190
  • See, you know what's really funny to me?
  • 00:15:40.200 --> 00:15:44.050
  • Every day when we get up out of our bed and we leave our home,
  • 00:15:44.060 --> 00:15:49.110
  • we jump into an ocean of God's blessings
  • 00:15:49.120 --> 00:15:53.010
  • and don't even realize we just got wet.
  • 00:15:53.020 --> 00:15:55.220
  • And then to make the point, the psalmist continues
  • 00:15:55.230 --> 00:15:58.020
  • by saying this, he said the land yields its harvest.
  • 00:15:58.030 --> 00:16:01.140
  • God, our God, blesses us. Now, let me ask you a question.
  • 00:16:01.150 --> 00:16:05.240
  • Why would the songwriter all of a sudden,
  • 00:16:05.250 --> 00:16:08.000
  • he's got this beautiful song going on, all of a sudden
  • 00:16:08.010 --> 00:16:09.250
  • he goes Farmer Jones on us.
  • 00:16:09.260 --> 00:16:12.130
  • He starts talking about a harvest.
  • 00:16:12.140 --> 00:16:13.280
  • Why in the world would he start talking about a harvest
  • 00:16:13.290 --> 00:16:16.100
  • right in the middle of the blessings of God?
  • 00:16:16.110 --> 00:16:19.240
  • Well, keep in mind, unlike who I'm talking to today, he
  • 00:16:19.250 --> 00:16:24.160
  • was not talking to an industrialized society, he was
  • 00:16:24.170 --> 00:16:27.230
  • not talking to a mechanized society, he was not talking
  • 00:16:27.240 --> 00:16:30.200
  • to a computerized society, he was talking
  • 00:16:30.210 --> 00:16:33.090
  • to an agricultural society.
  • 00:16:33.100 --> 00:16:35.270
  • And one of the most visible ways you can see the goodness
  • 00:16:35.280 --> 00:16:38.030
  • and the blessing of God was in a harvest.
  • 00:16:38.040 --> 00:16:40.040
  • As a matter of fact, most scholars even believed this was
  • 00:16:40.050 --> 00:16:42.050
  • a harvest song that the farmers and other people would sing
  • 00:16:42.060 --> 00:16:45.260
  • when they were bringing in their crops.
  • 00:16:45.270 --> 00:16:47.240
  • Because if you've ever done any farming, you know the
  • 00:16:47.250 --> 00:16:50.210
  • most important word to a farmer is the word "harvest,"
  • 00:16:50.220 --> 00:16:56.190
  • because to a farmer, that word is the difference
  • 00:16:56.200 --> 00:17:01.230
  • between plenty and poverty.
  • 00:17:01.240 --> 00:17:05.110
  • That word is the difference between surviving and thriving.
  • 00:17:05.120 --> 00:17:10.130
  • That word is the difference between life and death.
  • 00:17:10.140 --> 00:17:15.130
  • And what the psalmist is saying is to all those farmers that
  • 00:17:15.140 --> 00:17:18.050
  • we're out there, nothing represents the goodness of God
  • 00:17:18.060 --> 00:17:21.110
  • more than the harvest because you can plow the ground, and
  • 00:17:21.120 --> 00:17:28.140
  • you can plant the seed, but only God can give the harvest.
  • 00:17:28.150 --> 00:17:34.010
  • And when God gives the harvest, he ought--you ought to realize,
  • 00:17:34.020 --> 00:17:37.250
  • he is the one that blessed you.
  • 00:17:37.260 --> 00:17:40.130
  • Farmer Jones, you can't guarantee the harvest.
  • 00:17:40.140 --> 00:17:44.010
  • Farmer Jones, you cannot give the harvest,
  • 00:17:44.020 --> 00:17:46.140
  • but God can do both.
  • 00:17:46.150 --> 00:17:48.240
  • And let me tell you the cold, hard truth of the matter.
  • 00:17:48.250 --> 00:17:51.020
  • This is true whether you're black or white,
  • 00:17:51.030 --> 00:17:53.000
  • this is true whether you're liberal or conservative,
  • 00:17:53.010 --> 00:17:54.270
  • this is true whether you're Republican or Democrat, this is
  • 00:17:54.280 --> 00:17:57.080
  • true no matter where you are in your ages and stage of life.
  • 00:17:57.090 --> 00:18:00.200
  • The truth of the matter is, whether it be health, or wealth,
  • 00:18:00.210 --> 00:18:04.130
  • or life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,
  • 00:18:04.140 --> 00:18:07.160
  • it's all the blessing of God.
  • 00:18:07.170 --> 00:18:10.270
  • All of it, it all comes from him.
  • 00:18:10.280 --> 00:18:13.150
  • Listen, I got news for you.
  • 00:18:13.160 --> 00:18:15.030
  • I don't care how much money you got in the bank,
  • 00:18:15.040 --> 00:18:16.260
  • I don't care what you got in your 401(k).
  • 00:18:16.270 --> 00:18:18.280
  • I don't care what you got in your retirement account.
  • 00:18:18.290 --> 00:18:20.280
  • I don't care if everything you got is paid off.
  • 00:18:20.290 --> 00:18:23.070
  • We all live from hand to mouth, his hand to our mouth.
  • 00:18:23.080 --> 00:18:29.160
  • And the psalmist says, we ought to be so glad every day
  • 00:18:29.170 --> 00:18:33.090
  • of our life because of the blessing of God.
  • 00:18:33.100 --> 00:18:37.210
  • But he's not finished, and I thank God he didn't
  • 00:18:37.220 --> 00:18:40.000
  • because I would have missed it.
  • 00:18:40.010 --> 00:18:43.040
  • He said, "You know it's true that God's blessing
  • 00:18:43.050 --> 00:18:47.050
  • gives us gladness, and gives us guidance, and gives us grace.
  • 00:18:47.060 --> 00:18:54.290
  • But the ultimate purpose of the blessing is
  • 00:18:55.000 --> 00:18:57.050
  • not any of those things."
  • 00:18:57.060 --> 00:18:58.280
  • He says, "God's blessed sin gives him glory.
  • 00:18:58.290 --> 00:19:02.220
  • God's blessing gives him glory."
  • 00:19:02.230 --> 00:19:05.050
  • So, here's the way it works, when you finally wake up and you
  • 00:19:05.060 --> 00:19:08.180
  • smell the coffee, and you finally realize that God gives
  • 00:19:08.190 --> 00:19:12.260
  • us grace, and guidance, and gladness, and goodness, when
  • 00:19:12.270 --> 00:19:16.290
  • you finally realize that and you acknowledge, we acknowledge,
  • 00:19:17.000 --> 00:19:20.140
  • we make sure we acknowledge by our lips and by our lives,
  • 00:19:20.150 --> 00:19:24.030
  • that he gets the glory.
  • 00:19:24.040 --> 00:19:26.120
  • Let me tell you why this is so important for us as a church.
  • 00:19:26.130 --> 00:19:30.050
  • We cannot expect the world to let God guide them
  • 00:19:30.060 --> 00:19:35.140
  • if we're not going to allow God to guide us.
  • 00:19:35.150 --> 00:19:39.060
  • We cannot expect the world to desire God's grace
  • 00:19:39.070 --> 00:19:42.210
  • if we don't testify we're the blessing of God's grace.
  • 00:19:42.220 --> 00:19:46.050
  • We will not ever, ever have a world that is full of gladness
  • 00:19:46.060 --> 00:19:50.180
  • rather than madness and sadness if we don't display by our
  • 00:19:50.190 --> 00:19:54.070
  • everyday life that we have the gladness of God because
  • 00:19:54.080 --> 00:19:58.100
  • ultimately, every blessing that you have, I hate to spoil the
  • 00:19:58.110 --> 00:20:02.090
  • party, every blessing that you have is not for your good
  • 00:20:02.100 --> 00:20:05.110
  • ultimately, it's for his glory, and it's for his honor.
  • 00:20:05.120 --> 00:20:11.130
  • So, the psalmist closes by saying this in verse 7,
  • 00:20:11.140 --> 00:20:15.000
  • "May God bless us still," so that we could buy a bigger
  • 00:20:15.010 --> 00:20:21.060
  • house, so we could trade in the old car for a newer car,
  • 00:20:21.070 --> 00:20:27.220
  • so we could graduate from a Timex to a Rolex, so we could
  • 00:20:27.230 --> 00:20:32.010
  • go from blue jeans to a tuxedo.
  • 00:20:32.020 --> 00:20:34.120
  • No, "May God bless us still so that all the ends
  • 00:20:34.130 --> 00:20:39.270
  • of the earth will fear Him."
  • 00:20:39.280 --> 00:20:44.050
  • God desires all of the earth to fear him, to give him the
  • 00:20:44.060 --> 00:20:47.170
  • reverence, and the respect, and the response that he deserves,
  • 00:20:47.180 --> 00:20:50.270
  • to give him the worship and the witness that he desires, to give
  • 00:20:50.280 --> 00:20:54.020
  • him the love and the obedience that he demands.
  • 00:20:54.030 --> 00:20:57.180
  • And I want to say today to every believer in our campuses, and
  • 00:20:57.190 --> 00:21:01.010
  • I want to say to our campuses of every believer,
  • 00:21:01.020 --> 00:21:03.210
  • if we want others to give God glory, we must give God glory.
  • 00:21:03.220 --> 00:21:08.030
  • If we want others to honor God, we must honor God
  • 00:21:08.040 --> 00:21:12.010
  • because when you go back--and I'll wrap this up.
  • 00:21:12.020 --> 00:21:14.010
  • When you go back to the very first verse when the psalmist
  • 00:21:14.020 --> 00:21:16.140
  • says, "God, would you make your face shine on us?"
  • 00:21:16.150 --> 00:21:19.150
  • If you know your Old Testament, you'll know this,
  • 00:21:19.160 --> 00:21:21.120
  • if you don't, I'll tell you.
  • 00:21:21.130 --> 00:21:23.060
  • What the psalmist was actually doing was referring back to
  • 00:21:23.070 --> 00:21:26.030
  • a prayer that Moses actually prayed to God thousands
  • 00:21:26.040 --> 00:21:29.080
  • of years before that in the 33rd chapter of Exodus.
  • 00:21:29.090 --> 00:21:32.240
  • And in that chapter, Moses asked God for three things.
  • 00:21:32.250 --> 00:21:35.270
  • He said, "God, number one, would you so teach me your ways
  • 00:21:35.280 --> 00:21:41.130
  • that I would know you and find favor with you?"
  • 00:21:41.140 --> 00:21:46.210
  • And God said, "Moses, I can answer that prayer."
  • 00:21:46.220 --> 00:21:50.060
  • He didn't pray, number two, "God, would you promise me
  • 00:21:50.070 --> 00:21:54.050
  • that you will never ever take your presence away
  • 00:21:54.060 --> 00:21:56.290
  • from me or from my people?"
  • 00:21:57.000 --> 00:22:01.130
  • And God said to Moses, "Moses, I can do that.
  • 00:22:01.140 --> 00:22:05.170
  • Now, it's dependent upon you and your people obeying me,
  • 00:22:05.180 --> 00:22:08.180
  • and loving me, and worshiping me, and staying faithful to me,
  • 00:22:08.190 --> 00:22:11.130
  • but yes, I can do that."
  • 00:22:11.140 --> 00:22:14.210
  • But then Moses prayed, "God, would you let me look on
  • 00:22:14.220 --> 00:22:19.150
  • your face, and would you let me see your glory?"
  • 00:22:19.160 --> 00:22:26.280
  • And God said, "Moses, I can't do that."
  • 00:22:26.290 --> 00:22:32.120
  • "Well, God, why can't you do that?"
  • 00:22:32.130 --> 00:22:35.140
  • Here's what he said, "You cannot see my face, for
  • 00:22:35.150 --> 00:22:39.290
  • no one may see me and live."
  • 00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:45.080
  • All right, buckle your seatbelt. That was true.
  • 00:22:45.090 --> 00:22:52.170
  • Until Jesus came and when Jesus came, when you looked
  • 00:22:52.180 --> 00:22:58.160
  • into his face, you saw the face of God.
  • 00:22:58.170 --> 00:23:03.040
  • When you looked into his eyes, you saw the eyes of God.
  • 00:23:03.050 --> 00:23:07.130
  • When you heard him speak, you heard him
  • 00:23:07.140 --> 00:23:10.080
  • speak the voice of God.
  • 00:23:10.090 --> 00:23:12.160
  • When you touched his skin, you felt the skin of God.
  • 00:23:12.170 --> 00:23:16.240
  • And one day, listen to me, one day, we will all see God in all
  • 00:23:16.250 --> 00:23:22.190
  • of his glory when all of the redeemed people of the world
  • 00:23:22.200 --> 00:23:26.070
  • that are drawn from every tribe, and every tongue,
  • 00:23:26.080 --> 00:23:28.200
  • and every nation, come before his throne.
  • 00:23:28.210 --> 00:23:31.160
  • And one day we'll see every race bathed in amazing grace,
  • 00:23:31.170 --> 00:23:35.030
  • and we will all see his face and what a blessing it will be.
  • 00:23:35.040 --> 00:23:40.210
  • But it will only be because of the greatest blessing of all and
  • 00:23:40.220 --> 00:23:45.110
  • that was when God sent his Son to die on the cross and come
  • 00:23:45.120 --> 00:23:49.170
  • back from the dead so he could live in our hearts.
  • 00:23:49.180 --> 00:23:54.230
  • And as Tiny Tim said, "Bless us everyone."
  • 00:23:54.240 --> 00:23:59.140

  • pray for the ministry, and thanks for watching.
  • 00:25:53.160 --> 00:25:56.040
  • James: When we think about blessings, what comes to our
  • 00:25:57.180 --> 00:25:59.180
  • mind are things that we have such as possessions, and family,
  • 00:25:59.190 --> 00:26:03.160
  • and many of those are blessings from the Lord,
  • 00:26:03.170 --> 00:26:05.040
  • no doubt about it.
  • 00:26:05.050 --> 00:26:06.240
  • But if we're not careful, we can place too much emphasis
  • 00:26:06.250 --> 00:26:10.160
  • and importance on material things and anytime something
  • 00:26:10.170 --> 00:26:13.000
  • becomes more valuable to us than God like money,
  • 00:26:13.010 --> 00:26:16.050
  • it is no longer a blessing.
  • 00:26:16.060 --> 00:26:18.040
  • It's a curse.
  • 00:26:18.050 --> 00:26:19.210
  • God Himself is the greatest blessing
  • 00:26:19.220 --> 00:26:21.210
  • any of us could ever receive.
  • 00:26:21.220 --> 00:26:24.000
  • His unending love for us can never be surpassed.
  • 00:26:24.010 --> 00:26:27.150
  • When we carry this in our hearts, it shows in
  • 00:26:27.160 --> 00:26:29.170
  • our actions when people see the love of Jesus shining
  • 00:26:29.180 --> 00:26:31.250
  • through us and in that, God is glorified.
  • 00:26:31.260 --> 00:26:35.010
  • God's blessing also gives us guidance through life.
  • 00:26:35.020 --> 00:26:37.240
  • When we're focused on him, he will use us for his purposes.
  • 00:26:37.250 --> 00:26:41.120
  • And it's a blessing to know that the God of the universe wants
  • 00:26:41.130 --> 00:26:44.130
  • to use you and me to further his kingdom.
  • 00:26:44.140 --> 00:26:47.220
  • Following him doesn't mean that life will always be easy.
  • 00:26:47.230 --> 00:26:51.030
  • His blessing ensures that we can find gladness and
  • 00:26:51.040 --> 00:26:53.150
  • joy in all circumstances.
  • 00:26:53.160 --> 00:26:55.260
  • I pray that you're able to rest in the blessing of the love
  • 00:26:55.270 --> 00:26:58.100
  • of God and I hope you will meet me here next week as we wrap up
  • 00:26:58.110 --> 00:27:01.190
  • our "Music To My Ears" series.
  • 00:27:01.200 --> 00:27:04.040
  • Thank you for your prayers and your financial support.
  • 00:27:04.050 --> 00:27:07.170
  • Those are blessings to us and we appreciate so much
