  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Some say that the greatest question
  • 00:00:02.110 --> 00:00:03.010
  • in life is: "Does God exist?"
  • 00:00:03.020 --> 00:00:07.220
  • I say the greatest question is:
  • 00:00:07.230 --> 00:00:09.160
  • "Do I know the God who does exist?
  • 00:00:09.170 --> 00:00:13.040
  • Do I know about him?
  • 00:00:13.050 --> 00:00:15.130
  • Do I know him personally?"
  • 00:00:15.140 --> 00:00:18.270
  • The study of God as he reveals himself in Scripture
  • 00:00:18.280 --> 00:00:22.140
  • is the supreme study of a lifetime.
  • 00:00:22.150 --> 00:00:26.070
  • It lifts our thoughts, steadies our nerves,
  • 00:00:26.080 --> 00:00:33.080
  • purifies our motives, expands our confidence,
  • 00:00:33.090 --> 00:00:39.080
  • and strengthens our influence.
  • 00:00:39.090 --> 00:00:42.240
  • It's the greatest subject we could ever study,
  • 00:00:42.250 --> 00:00:46.190
  • for God is the apex of all reality.
  • 00:00:46.200 --> 00:00:51.000
  • 00:00:51.010 --> 00:01:01.020
  • 00:01:01.030 --> 00:01:11.000
  • 00:01:11.010 --> 00:01:21.000
  • 00:01:21.010 --> 00:01:31.010
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Discover more about God than you know
  • 00:01:32.170 --> 00:01:36.060
  • and become closer to him than you are.
  • 00:01:36.070 --> 00:01:39.230
  • 00:01:39.240 --> 00:01:48.000
  • male announcer: And now, here is your host,
  • 00:01:48.010 --> 00:01:49.290
  • Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:52.000
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Consider the wisdom of God
  • 00:01:53.040 --> 00:01:55.100
  • which is billions of times greater than human knowledge.
  • 00:01:55.110 --> 00:02:00.040
  • It is infinite.
  • 00:02:00.050 --> 00:02:02.110
  • Every bit of God's knowledge is always fully present
  • 00:02:02.120 --> 00:02:05.080
  • in his mind.
  • 00:02:05.090 --> 00:02:06.210
  • It never grows dim, nor does it fade.
  • 00:02:06.220 --> 00:02:10.110
  • God knows instantly with fullness of perfection
  • 00:02:10.120 --> 00:02:13.240
  • and he knows every possible item of knowledge
  • 00:02:13.250 --> 00:02:17.060
  • concerning everything that exists or that could exist
  • 00:02:17.070 --> 00:02:21.150
  • anywhere in the universe at any time in the past
  • 00:02:21.160 --> 00:02:25.090
  • or that may ever exist in the ages to come.
  • 00:02:25.100 --> 00:02:29.190
  • While the implications of God's knowledge of everything
  • 00:02:29.200 --> 00:02:32.120
  • including us may sound intimidating,
  • 00:02:32.130 --> 00:02:35.130
  • it is exactly the opposite.
  • 00:02:35.140 --> 00:02:37.270
  • God will never misunderstand you.
  • 00:02:37.280 --> 00:02:41.010
  • He never takes something the wrong way and nothing
  • 00:02:41.020 --> 00:02:44.050
  • you could do could ever deflect his love for you.
  • 00:02:44.060 --> 00:02:48.110
  • In today's message we continue to spend time
  • 00:02:48.120 --> 00:02:51.260
  • with the God you may not know, who is also the God
  • 00:02:51.270 --> 00:02:55.140
  • who loves you more than you know.
  • 00:02:55.150 --> 00:02:59.070
  • So stay tuned for today's edition of "Turning Point."
  • 00:02:59.080 --> 00:03:03.070
  • 00:03:03.080 --> 00:03:12.250
  • announcer: Do you know God as well as you think?
  • 00:03:12.260 --> 00:03:15.270
  • It may be time to take the journey
  • 00:03:15.280 --> 00:03:17.190
  • from knowing about God to deeply knowing him.
  • 00:03:17.200 --> 00:03:20.220
  • In Dr. David Jeremiah's book,
  • 00:03:21.040 --> 00:03:23.020
  • "The God You May Not Know," Dr. Jeremiah shares
  • 00:03:23.030 --> 00:03:25.240
  • the powerful characteristics
  • 00:03:25.250 --> 00:03:27.080
  • that God himself wants you to understand.
  • 00:03:27.090 --> 00:03:29.160
  • Dr. Jeremiah: I've spent my life being overwhelmed
  • 00:03:30.080 --> 00:03:32.080
  • with the wonder of the person of God
  • 00:03:32.090 --> 00:03:34.150
  • and it's my greatest joy to share with you
  • 00:03:34.160 --> 00:03:37.180
  • some eternal truths about the God you may not know.
  • 00:03:37.190 --> 00:03:41.230
  • My prayer is that this book will enable you
  • 00:03:41.240 --> 00:03:44.120
  • to know more about God than you do
  • 00:03:44.130 --> 00:03:47.230
  • and for you to grow closer to him than you are.
  • 00:03:47.240 --> 00:03:51.040

  • Now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
  • 00:04:30.250 --> 00:04:34.070
  • "Knowing an All-Knowing God."
  • 00:04:34.080 --> 00:04:36.080
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Has it occurred to you that nothing occurs to God?
  • 00:04:37.010 --> 00:04:41.000
  • That is, he never just remembers something.
  • 00:04:41.010 --> 00:04:43.230
  • He never has a new thought pop into his mind.
  • 00:04:43.240 --> 00:04:47.030
  • Never has an old one slipped from his memory.
  • 00:04:47.040 --> 00:04:50.120
  • Never wracks his brain to figure out what to do.
  • 00:04:50.130 --> 00:04:54.080
  • He never wonders about anything.
  • 00:04:54.090 --> 00:04:56.090
  • He is never surprised.
  • 00:04:56.100 --> 00:04:58.060
  • He instantly and eternally knows every fact about everything,
  • 00:04:58.070 --> 00:05:02.200
  • everywhere, forever, and he knows it perfectly,
  • 00:05:02.210 --> 00:05:06.170
  • completely, and unerringly.
  • 00:05:06.180 --> 00:05:10.150
  • God has never learned anything.
  • 00:05:10.160 --> 00:05:14.140
  • He cannot learn anything.
  • 00:05:14.150 --> 00:05:18.200
  • It may be startling to say that God has never learned
  • 00:05:18.210 --> 00:05:22.020
  • and cannot learn but if God could learn something
  • 00:05:22.030 --> 00:05:24.270
  • that he didn't already know, he wouldn't be infinite,
  • 00:05:24.280 --> 00:05:29.220
  • he wouldn't be perfect, he wouldn't be eternal,
  • 00:05:29.230 --> 00:05:32.230
  • and he couldn't be God.
  • 00:05:32.240 --> 00:05:35.100
  • In this message, I wanna tell you,
  • 00:05:35.110 --> 00:05:37.180
  • you have a God who knows you and loves you.
  • 00:05:37.190 --> 00:05:42.200
  • David wrote about this in Psalm 139.
  • 00:05:42.210 --> 00:05:45.160
  • Listen to his words.
  • 00:05:45.170 --> 00:05:46.270
  • He said, "You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.
  • 00:05:46.280 --> 00:05:52.020
  • You know when I sit and when I rise;
  • 00:05:52.030 --> 00:05:55.200
  • you perceive my thoughts from afar.
  • 00:05:55.210 --> 00:05:58.020
  • You discern my going out and my lying down;
  • 00:05:58.030 --> 00:06:00.270
  • you're familiar with all my ways."
  • 00:06:00.280 --> 00:06:02.170
  • Now listen to this.
  • 00:06:02.180 --> 00:06:03.270
  • "Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord,
  • 00:06:03.280 --> 00:06:07.220
  • know it completely."
  • 00:06:07.230 --> 00:06:10.220
  • According to this passage, God knows you better than
  • 00:06:10.230 --> 00:06:13.120
  • you know yourself.
  • 00:06:13.130 --> 00:06:15.170
  • He knows the status of your health.
  • 00:06:15.180 --> 00:06:18.200
  • He knows the temperature of your emotions.
  • 00:06:18.210 --> 00:06:21.140
  • He knows the level of your faith and the purity of your thoughts.
  • 00:06:21.150 --> 00:06:25.110
  • He knows the maturity of your soul.
  • 00:06:25.120 --> 00:06:28.010
  • He knows the hurts that are hiding in your past
  • 00:06:28.020 --> 00:06:31.050
  • and the fear that is clouding your future.
  • 00:06:31.060 --> 00:06:35.110
  • He knows what you're going to say tomorrow.
  • 00:06:35.120 --> 00:06:38.250
  • He knows every word you'll speak in all the conversations
  • 00:06:38.260 --> 00:06:41.200
  • you'll ever have in your entire life.
  • 00:06:41.210 --> 00:06:45.000
  • He knows when you come and go, when you sit and stand,
  • 00:06:45.010 --> 00:06:49.230
  • when you rise and fall.
  • 00:06:49.240 --> 00:06:52.210
  • David is so overwhelmed as he ponders this truth about God
  • 00:06:52.220 --> 00:06:57.170
  • that he writes in Psalm 139, "I am fearfully
  • 00:06:57.180 --> 00:07:03.090
  • and wonderfully made.
  • 00:07:03.100 --> 00:07:05.160
  • My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in secret.
  • 00:07:05.170 --> 00:07:09.290
  • Your eyes saw my substance, when I was yet unformed."
  • 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:16.190
  • And God has planned every day of David's life in advance.
  • 00:07:16.200 --> 00:07:21.100
  • Psalm 139, verse 16 says: "Every day of my life
  • 00:07:21.110 --> 00:07:25.020
  • was recorded in your book.
  • 00:07:25.030 --> 00:07:27.180
  • Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed."
  • 00:07:27.190 --> 00:07:32.250
  • How then should that make us feel?
  • 00:07:32.260 --> 00:07:35.160
  • Let David tell us, again in Psalm 139.
  • 00:07:35.170 --> 00:07:40.120
  • I love this first statement: "How precious are your thoughts
  • 00:07:40.130 --> 00:07:46.290
  • about me, O God.
  • 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:49.050
  • They cannot be numbered!
  • 00:07:53.030 --> 00:07:55.220
  • I can't count them;
  • 00:07:55.230 --> 00:07:59.080
  • they outnumber the grains of sand!
  • 00:07:59.090 --> 00:08:02.120
  • And when I wake up, you're still with me!"
  • 00:08:02.130 --> 00:08:07.290
  • I never really thought about this before.
  • 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:11.030
  • The thoughts that God has concerning me
  • 00:08:11.040 --> 00:08:15.180
  • and how precious they are.
  • 00:08:15.190 --> 00:08:20.030
  • Like all of God's other attributes,
  • 00:08:20.040 --> 00:08:22.160
  • God's all-knowing nature is impossible for us to comprehend.
  • 00:08:22.170 --> 00:08:27.100
  • When the Lord Jesus Christ was on this earth
  • 00:08:27.110 --> 00:08:29.150
  • we learned that he voluntarily divested himself
  • 00:08:29.160 --> 00:08:32.070
  • of the independent use of his attributes.
  • 00:08:32.080 --> 00:08:34.120
  • He did not play God while he was in the flesh.
  • 00:08:34.130 --> 00:08:38.080
  • But on occasions, his uniqueness and his deity
  • 00:08:38.210 --> 00:08:44.190
  • and his omniscience broke out.
  • 00:08:44.200 --> 00:08:50.020
  • Let me tell you what I mean.
  • 00:08:50.030 --> 00:08:51.200
  • In the Gospels, Jesus instantly knew
  • 00:08:51.210 --> 00:08:53.210
  • the thoughts of everybody who was around him.
  • 00:08:53.220 --> 00:08:56.160
  • Yet Matthew 12 tells a story about a demon-possessed man
  • 00:08:56.170 --> 00:08:59.170
  • who came to Jesus and the Pharisees
  • 00:08:59.180 --> 00:09:01.120
  • were muttering among themselves about the commotion,
  • 00:09:01.130 --> 00:09:04.030
  • and in verse 25 we read: "But Jesus knew their thoughts."
  • 00:09:04.040 --> 00:09:10.130
  • When a man with a withered hand came to Jesus,
  • 00:09:10.140 --> 00:09:12.170
  • the critics were really upset but Luke 6:8 says:
  • 00:09:12.180 --> 00:09:15.270
  • "But Jesus knew their thoughts."
  • 00:09:15.280 --> 00:09:18.170
  • And when the crowds wanted to hail Jesus as King,
  • 00:09:18.180 --> 00:09:21.100
  • the Bible says he withdrew because
  • 00:09:21.110 --> 00:09:23.110
  • "he knew all men, and had no need
  • 00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:26.190
  • that anyone should testify of man,
  • 00:09:26.200 --> 00:09:28.180
  • for he knew what was in man."
  • 00:09:28.190 --> 00:09:32.180
  • Likewise, John 6:61 says that, "when Jesus knew in himself
  • 00:09:32.190 --> 00:09:36.000
  • that his disciples complained about this, he said to them,
  • 00:09:36.010 --> 00:09:40.090
  • 'Does this offend you?'"
  • 00:09:40.100 --> 00:09:41.290
  • And a few verses later, John wrote:
  • 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:44.140
  • "Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not
  • 00:09:44.150 --> 00:09:47.250
  • believe and who would betray him," wow.
  • 00:09:47.260 --> 00:09:51.260
  • Even in his humanity, during the days
  • 00:09:52.260 --> 00:09:54.250
  • of his earthly ministry, Jesus seemed to possess
  • 00:09:54.260 --> 00:09:57.270
  • this perception or knowledge beyond the range
  • 00:09:57.280 --> 00:10:00.170
  • of human capacity.
  • 00:10:00.180 --> 00:10:02.010
  • In one occasion in the book of Matthew,
  • 00:10:02.020 --> 00:10:04.040
  • we read these words.
  • 00:10:04.050 --> 00:10:06.010
  • Jesus is saying this: "Woe to you, Chorazin!
  • 00:10:06.020 --> 00:10:09.020
  • Woe to you, Bethsaida!
  • 00:10:09.030 --> 00:10:10.260
  • For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done
  • 00:10:10.270 --> 00:10:13.290
  • in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented
  • 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:17.130
  • long ago in sackcloth and ashes."
  • 00:10:17.140 --> 00:10:19.080
  • Now stop and think about that.
  • 00:10:19.090 --> 00:10:21.000
  • How could Jesus know that?
  • 00:10:21.010 --> 00:10:22.250
  • How could Jesus possibly know what would have happened
  • 00:10:22.260 --> 00:10:26.180
  • in remote cities in a hypothetical situation?
  • 00:10:26.190 --> 00:10:30.040
  • From this passage, we learn that the omniscience of God
  • 00:10:30.050 --> 00:10:33.150
  • means he not only knows everything that is actual,
  • 00:10:33.160 --> 00:10:38.080
  • he knows everything that is possible.
  • 00:10:38.090 --> 00:10:41.290
  • There are no hypothetical questions for God.
  • 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:45.050
  • He knows how every contingency would resolve itself
  • 00:10:45.060 --> 00:10:48.190
  • if it were implemented.
  • 00:10:48.200 --> 00:10:50.050
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you say,
  • 00:10:51.110 --> 00:10:52.200
  • "Well, Dr. Jeremiah, that's a high and lofty truth.
  • 00:10:52.210 --> 00:10:54.200
  • He sure is worthy of our worship,
  • 00:10:54.210 --> 00:10:58.000
  • he knows everything, but what does that mean to me?
  • 00:10:58.010 --> 00:11:02.120
  • How do I process that?
  • 00:11:02.130 --> 00:11:03.220
  • How does that work in my life?"
  • 00:11:03.230 --> 00:11:05.100
  • And I'd like to give you three or four things
  • 00:11:05.110 --> 00:11:07.150
  • that you should take away from this.
  • 00:11:07.160 --> 00:11:08.250
  • First of all, let's talk about God's omniscience
  • 00:11:08.260 --> 00:11:13.040
  • and our confession of sin.
  • 00:11:13.050 --> 00:11:16.050
  • God's all-knowing nature isn't simply an academic study.
  • 00:11:16.060 --> 00:11:19.260
  • "He who covers his sins will not prosper,
  • 00:11:21.060 --> 00:11:24.150
  • but whoever confesses and forsakes them
  • 00:11:24.160 --> 00:11:27.250
  • will have mercy from God."
  • 00:11:27.260 --> 00:11:31.000
  • Isn't it kind of foolish that we try to cover our sins
  • 00:11:31.010 --> 00:11:35.230
  • from an omniscient God?
  • 00:11:35.240 --> 00:11:38.220
  • We posture, we spin, we do all of this fake stuff that happens,
  • 00:11:38.230 --> 00:11:45.140
  • and it may work with those who we know in the flesh
  • 00:11:45.150 --> 00:11:49.020
  • but it's not making much of an impression on God
  • 00:11:49.030 --> 00:11:51.180
  • because he knew you were gonna do that before you did it.
  • 00:11:51.190 --> 00:11:55.170
  • And here's the thing you have to understand:
  • 00:11:55.180 --> 00:11:58.080
  • he didn't stop loving you in the process.
  • 00:11:58.090 --> 00:12:01.140
  • And he wants you to know the joy of forgiveness for what you do
  • 00:12:01.150 --> 00:12:05.190
  • that is wrong and you don't have to get a whole bunch of steam up
  • 00:12:05.200 --> 00:12:08.290
  • to go and tell him it because he already knows it.
  • 00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:13.070
  • So confess your sin.
  • 00:12:13.080 --> 00:12:14.260
  • You know what confession means?
  • 00:12:14.270 --> 00:12:16.110
  • It means to say the same thing about your sin that God says.
  • 00:12:16.120 --> 00:12:21.040
  • Confess your sin.
  • 00:12:21.050 --> 00:12:22.290
  • Tell God you're sorry.
  • 00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:24.220
  • Get back on the track and keep going.
  • 00:12:24.230 --> 00:12:27.170
  • But to try to hide your sin or to think in some silly way
  • 00:12:27.180 --> 00:12:31.030
  • you can cover it from an almighty omniscient God,
  • 00:12:31.040 --> 00:12:36.050
  • that doesn't make any sense at all.
  • 00:12:36.060 --> 00:12:38.240
  • And it will rob you of your job and of your fellowship with God.
  • 00:12:38.250 --> 00:12:43.130
  • It won't rob you of your salvation.
  • 00:12:43.140 --> 00:12:45.200
  • David lived that way for a while, remember?
  • 00:12:45.210 --> 00:12:47.180
  • And he prayed, "Oh, Lord God, restore unto me
  • 00:12:47.190 --> 00:12:51.000
  • the joy of my salvation."
  • 00:12:51.010 --> 00:12:52.100
  • He didn't lose his salvation.
  • 00:12:52.110 --> 00:12:53.200
  • He just lost his joy.
  • 00:12:53.210 --> 00:12:55.000
  • Have you lost your joy?
  • 00:12:55.010 --> 00:12:56.100
  • Just go and tell God what's going on.
  • 00:12:56.110 --> 00:12:59.180
  • So that's how God's omniscience affects our confession of sin.
  • 00:12:59.190 --> 00:13:04.120
  • Let's talk about God's omniscience
  • 00:13:04.130 --> 00:13:06.180
  • and our fellowship with God.
  • 00:13:06.190 --> 00:13:09.110
  • When we began our relationship with God through Jesus Christ,
  • 00:13:09.120 --> 00:13:12.060
  • that's when we start to understand and rejoice
  • 00:13:12.070 --> 00:13:14.290
  • in God's omniscience for it's a tremendous encouragement
  • 00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:17.250
  • in our daily walk.
  • 00:13:17.260 --> 00:13:19.270
  • We enjoy the security of knowing that he knows us,
  • 00:13:19.280 --> 00:13:23.180
  • he knows all about us, and he still loves us.
  • 00:13:23.190 --> 00:13:28.080
  • His love, his omniscience, are infinite which means he can
  • 00:13:28.090 --> 00:13:32.020
  • never know us better or love us less than he does right now.
  • 00:13:32.030 --> 00:13:37.090
  • He is an almighty omniscient God who knows everything
  • 00:13:37.100 --> 00:13:41.260
  • about who we are and loves us eternally and infinitely.
  • 00:13:41.270 --> 00:13:45.150
  • He could never love us less, he could never love us more
  • 00:13:45.160 --> 00:13:48.200
  • because he loves us perfectly in all that we are.
  • 00:13:48.210 --> 00:13:53.100
  • Some of us struggle because in our human relationships,
  • 00:13:53.110 --> 00:13:56.180
  • love is often performance based.
  • 00:13:56.190 --> 00:13:58.290
  • "I will love you if you do such and such,"
  • 00:13:59.000 --> 00:14:01.040
  • and when we stop doing such and such,
  • 00:14:01.050 --> 00:14:02.190
  • we say we don't love them anymore.
  • 00:14:02.200 --> 00:14:04.260
  • We hear all kinds of flimsy excuses for relationships
  • 00:14:04.270 --> 00:14:08.010
  • breaking up like not being connected or,
  • 00:14:08.020 --> 00:14:10.070
  • "I don't feel your love," or whatever,
  • 00:14:10.080 --> 00:14:12.030
  • but you never have to worry about that with God.
  • 00:14:12.040 --> 00:14:14.020
  • You can count on it.
  • 00:14:14.030 --> 00:14:15.190
  • No matter what you did today, God loves you as much as
  • 00:14:15.200 --> 00:14:18.030
  • he did yesterday and he'll love you the same amount tomorrow.
  • 00:14:18.040 --> 00:14:21.220
  • He's an all-knowing God and his love never is changed,
  • 00:14:21.230 --> 00:14:26.150
  • no matter.
  • 00:14:26.160 --> 00:14:27.250
  • Now, does that mean you should go on doing things
  • 00:14:27.260 --> 00:14:29.050
  • that offend him?
  • 00:14:29.060 --> 00:14:30.150
  • Absolutely not.
  • 00:14:30.160 --> 00:14:31.250
  • Confession, that's the way to get your heart right with God.
  • 00:14:31.260 --> 00:14:37.250
  • 2 Timothy 2:19 says: "Nevertheless the solid
  • 00:14:37.260 --> 00:14:41.090
  • foundation of God stands, having this seal:
  • 00:14:41.100 --> 00:14:44.180
  • 'The Lord knows those who are his.'"
  • 00:14:44.190 --> 00:14:47.010
  • This is a special promise for believers.
  • 00:14:47.020 --> 00:14:49.140
  • He knows that you're his, that you belong to him.
  • 00:14:49.150 --> 00:14:52.080
  • You're a child of the King.
  • 00:14:52.090 --> 00:14:54.250
  • Third, these get progressively more difficult.
  • 00:14:54.260 --> 00:14:58.270
  • Not only to understand but to explain.
  • 00:14:58.280 --> 00:15:02.150
  • God's omniscience and our prayers.
  • 00:15:02.160 --> 00:15:05.130
  • God's omniscience has much to do with the way we pray.
  • 00:15:05.140 --> 00:15:09.130
  • Now listen carefully.
  • 00:15:09.140 --> 00:15:11.120
  • The Lord Jesus tells us to approach God in a simple
  • 00:15:11.130 --> 00:15:13.260
  • and sincere way, and with full assurance that he already knows
  • 00:15:13.270 --> 00:15:18.240
  • what we need before we ask him.
  • 00:15:18.250 --> 00:15:22.060
  • Listen to this.
  • 00:15:22.070 --> 00:15:23.160
  • "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?'
  • 00:15:23.170 --> 00:15:26.120
  • or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'
  • 00:15:26.130 --> 00:15:29.210
  • For after all these things the Gentiles seek.
  • 00:15:29.220 --> 00:15:33.020
  • For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things."
  • 00:15:33.030 --> 00:15:38.280
  • And I know what's going through your mind: "If God already knows
  • 00:15:38.290 --> 00:15:43.050
  • what we need why do we pray?
  • 00:15:43.060 --> 00:15:46.150
  • Isn't it a waste of time to talk to God since he already knows
  • 00:15:46.160 --> 00:15:50.030
  • what we need, what we're gonna say?"
  • 00:15:50.040 --> 00:15:53.080
  • Yet God has commanded us to pray and if we didn't know
  • 00:15:53.090 --> 00:15:55.230
  • anything else, that would be enough, wouldn't it?
  • 00:15:55.240 --> 00:15:57.280
  • Even if we don't understand all the dynamics of prayer,
  • 00:15:57.290 --> 00:15:59.270
  • we read in the Bible: "Men ought always to pray,
  • 00:15:59.280 --> 00:16:02.110
  • and not faint."
  • 00:16:02.120 --> 00:16:03.220
  • So if God says we should pray, we should pray even if
  • 00:16:03.230 --> 00:16:05.030
  • we don't understand some of the issues involved.
  • 00:16:05.040 --> 00:16:07.230
  • But let's talk about this issue.
  • 00:16:07.240 --> 00:16:10.040
  • God has commanded us to pray and,
  • 00:16:10.050 --> 00:16:11.270
  • when we pray, we're doing exactly what the Lord
  • 00:16:11.280 --> 00:16:13.290
  • has told us to do and have you discovered this?
  • 00:16:14.000 --> 00:16:16.070
  • It is often while in prayer that we ourselves begin to realize
  • 00:16:16.080 --> 00:16:21.200
  • what we really need.
  • 00:16:21.210 --> 00:16:24.240
  • Prayer is how we discover submission to the will of God.
  • 00:16:24.250 --> 00:16:27.260
  • We don't pray over our needs to remind God that we have them,
  • 00:16:27.270 --> 00:16:32.040
  • but to acknowledge him as the source of all of our provision,
  • 00:16:32.050 --> 00:16:35.240
  • to express our confidence in him and to thank him
  • 00:16:35.250 --> 00:16:38.060
  • for what he does.
  • 00:16:38.070 --> 00:16:40.170
  • God, with perfect knowledge, knows how events will unfold
  • 00:16:40.180 --> 00:16:44.140
  • and his answers to our prayers are aided by his omniscience.
  • 00:16:44.150 --> 00:16:48.200
  • He already knows what we need.
  • 00:16:48.210 --> 00:16:50.070
  • He helps us grow through prayer to submission
  • 00:16:50.080 --> 00:16:52.060
  • to his perfect will.
  • 00:16:52.070 --> 00:16:53.260
  • While we're to bring our request to God,
  • 00:16:53.270 --> 00:16:56.080
  • we don't have to frantically worry that we're forgetting
  • 00:16:56.090 --> 00:16:59.020
  • some unnecessary detail.
  • 00:16:59.030 --> 00:17:01.230
  • He knows what we need far better than we do,
  • 00:17:01.240 --> 00:17:04.100
  • and prayer is alignment with God.
  • 00:17:04.110 --> 00:17:09.050
  • Listen to me, prayer changes us.
  • 00:17:09.060 --> 00:17:12.160
  • When we pray and we connect with God in prayer
  • 00:17:12.170 --> 00:17:15.180
  • and we earnestly seek his will in our lives,
  • 00:17:15.190 --> 00:17:18.130
  • what happens isn't so much that God moves in some way for us.
  • 00:17:18.140 --> 00:17:22.060
  • We move toward God.
  • 00:17:22.070 --> 00:17:23.260
  • And when you get in sync with God,
  • 00:17:23.270 --> 00:17:25.150
  • you're under the spout of blessing, hallelujah.
  • 00:17:25.160 --> 00:17:29.140
  • Prayer is about keeping in fellowship with God
  • 00:17:29.150 --> 00:17:33.060
  • so you stay in alignment with God and, yes, when you do that,
  • 00:17:33.070 --> 00:17:37.280
  • God answers prayer.
  • 00:17:37.290 --> 00:17:39.120
  • Have you ever wondered why the Scripture says:
  • 00:17:39.130 --> 00:17:41.260
  • "If you ask anything according to his will, he will do it"?
  • 00:17:41.270 --> 00:17:46.210
  • What does that mean?
  • 00:17:46.220 --> 00:17:48.020
  • Get in alignment with God and ask anything you want
  • 00:17:48.030 --> 00:17:51.160
  • 'cause if you're in the will of God,
  • 00:17:51.170 --> 00:17:53.240
  • you can be sure he'll answer your prayer.
  • 00:17:53.250 --> 00:17:57.010
  • And then, here's one that has filled a lot of theology books
  • 00:17:57.020 --> 00:18:02.130
  • and attempts to answer this question:
  • 00:18:02.140 --> 00:18:06.210
  • the omniscience of God and our suffering.
  • 00:18:06.220 --> 00:18:11.130
  • And some of you need to listen carefully.
  • 00:18:11.140 --> 00:18:14.200
  • God's omniscience comes to bear in our suffering.
  • 00:18:14.210 --> 00:18:17.170
  • I mean, occasionally, something will happen to us
  • 00:18:17.180 --> 00:18:19.180
  • so hurtful that we don't even know how to express it,
  • 00:18:19.190 --> 00:18:23.020
  • even to our closest friends.
  • 00:18:23.030 --> 00:18:25.040
  • And we long for someone who can understand our souls and what
  • 00:18:25.050 --> 00:18:28.170
  • an encouragement to know that Almighty God is an all-knowing
  • 00:18:28.180 --> 00:18:32.000
  • friend who sticks closer than a brother and knows
  • 00:18:32.010 --> 00:18:35.040
  • every pulse of our heart.
  • 00:18:35.050 --> 00:18:37.180
  • He may not immediately disclose all the solutions to us,
  • 00:18:37.190 --> 00:18:41.190
  • but we can rest assured that he has the answers.
  • 00:18:41.200 --> 00:18:44.250
  • He knows the solutions, he resolves the difficulties,
  • 00:18:44.260 --> 00:18:48.020
  • he keeps his promises, his grace is always
  • 00:18:48.030 --> 00:18:50.220
  • sufficient and, most of all, he knows our hearts
  • 00:18:50.230 --> 00:18:53.080
  • and our hurts through every trial.
  • 00:18:53.090 --> 00:18:56.140
  • We're not omniscient but God is.
  • 00:18:56.150 --> 00:18:59.220
  • And in times of uncertainty, we can trust a God
  • 00:18:59.230 --> 00:19:02.090
  • who is certain in all things.
  • 00:19:02.100 --> 00:19:04.180
  • The Christian life is a life of faith which is described
  • 00:19:04.190 --> 00:19:07.110
  • in Hebrews 11:1 as "the substance of things hoped for,
  • 00:19:07.120 --> 00:19:11.090
  • the evidence of things not seen."
  • 00:19:11.100 --> 00:19:13.220
  • What does that mean?
  • 00:19:13.230 --> 00:19:15.140
  • We can paraphrase it this way: faith is trusting God
  • 00:19:15.150 --> 00:19:19.240
  • when the answers have not yet appeared.
  • 00:19:19.250 --> 00:19:24.020
  • Sometimes, we pray and it doesn't seem like
  • 00:19:24.030 --> 00:19:27.260
  • God is listening.
  • 00:19:27.270 --> 00:19:30.040
  • That's when faith goes into purpose.
  • 00:19:30.050 --> 00:19:34.160
  • If we know God, we know he's a worthy God who loves us,
  • 00:19:34.170 --> 00:19:38.190
  • we've looked at his holiness and his faithfulness and he never
  • 00:19:38.200 --> 00:19:41.170
  • changes and he's good and he's powerful and soon we'll learn
  • 00:19:41.180 --> 00:19:44.180
  • that he's loving, we know all of these things about God so when
  • 00:19:44.190 --> 00:19:48.020
  • we don't know what's going on, we have to hang on to the things
  • 00:19:48.030 --> 00:19:51.040
  • we do know and that's when faith happens.
  • 00:19:51.050 --> 00:19:55.140
  • We trust in the God we know when we haven't yet been brought up
  • 00:19:55.150 --> 00:19:59.030
  • to speed on what he's doing.
  • 00:19:59.040 --> 00:20:01.280
  • According to Psalm 147, verse 5:
  • 00:20:01.290 --> 00:20:04.280
  • "God's understanding is infinite,"
  • 00:20:04.290 --> 00:20:07.280
  • so he has universal knowledge of every detail
  • 00:20:07.290 --> 00:20:11.040
  • of every trial we will ever face.
  • 00:20:11.050 --> 00:20:14.050
  • He knows how those trials came about,
  • 00:20:14.060 --> 00:20:17.030
  • how many thousands of events unfolded throughout our history
  • 00:20:17.040 --> 00:20:20.070
  • to cause them.
  • 00:20:20.080 --> 00:20:21.250
  • He knows how many complicated aftereffects
  • 00:20:21.260 --> 00:20:24.230
  • the trials will produce.
  • 00:20:24.240 --> 00:20:26.250
  • He knows exactly how many tears they will bring to your eyes,
  • 00:20:26.260 --> 00:20:30.130
  • how much hurt they will bring to your heart,
  • 00:20:30.140 --> 00:20:32.190
  • how many blessings they will yield as the years go by.
  • 00:20:32.200 --> 00:20:36.210
  • He knows the end from the beginning.
  • 00:20:36.220 --> 00:20:38.250
  • So "trust in the Lord with all your heart,
  • 00:20:38.260 --> 00:20:42.060
  • and lean not to your own understanding."
  • 00:20:42.070 --> 00:20:46.290
  • That verse is just not the most famous life verse
  • 00:20:47.000 --> 00:20:50.120
  • of God's people.
  • 00:20:50.130 --> 00:20:52.030
  • It's the verse that you come to when you've asked God for help
  • 00:20:52.040 --> 00:20:56.060
  • and it doesn't seem to be happening the way you thought
  • 00:20:56.070 --> 00:20:58.290
  • it would, because you're leaning to your own understanding.
  • 00:20:59.000 --> 00:21:03.130
  • And the Bible says don't lean to your own understanding
  • 00:21:03.140 --> 00:21:06.080
  • but trust God, the God you know,
  • 00:21:06.090 --> 00:21:09.280
  • the God you're learning to know better.
  • 00:21:09.290 --> 00:21:12.230
  • The ways of God are often imponderable.
  • 00:21:12.240 --> 00:21:16.000
  • Sometimes we ask questions like this: "If God knows everything,
  • 00:21:16.010 --> 00:21:20.200
  • both what has happened in the past and what's going to happen
  • 00:21:20.210 --> 00:21:23.150
  • in the future, why does he let this happen?"
  • 00:21:23.160 --> 00:21:27.260
  • That's a reasonable question, but we must make room
  • 00:21:30.040 --> 00:21:32.140
  • for God's omniscience.
  • 00:21:32.150 --> 00:21:34.090
  • He sees things in their totality.
  • 00:21:34.100 --> 00:21:36.230
  • Listen to me.
  • 00:21:36.240 --> 00:21:38.030
  • God sees everything all at once.
  • 00:21:38.040 --> 00:21:40.040
  • We peer at life through a small crack in the wall.
  • 00:21:40.050 --> 00:21:45.130
  • God sees this; we see this.
  • 00:21:45.140 --> 00:21:47.140
  • Isaiah 55:8-9 says: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
  • 00:21:49.140 --> 00:21:53.190
  • nor are your ways my ways, for as the heavens are higher
  • 00:21:53.200 --> 00:21:57.240
  • than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways,
  • 00:21:57.250 --> 00:22:00.270
  • and my thoughts than your thoughts."
  • 00:22:00.280 --> 00:22:04.230
  • I'm sure you've had moments like I've had,
  • 00:22:04.240 --> 00:22:07.070
  • frustration that I can't figure out God.
  • 00:22:07.080 --> 00:22:11.070
  • I wanna figure out everything.
  • 00:22:11.080 --> 00:22:12.180
  • I'm just that way.
  • 00:22:12.190 --> 00:22:15.030
  • But I can't figure out God.
  • 00:22:15.040 --> 00:22:18.010
  • His ways are so high, so far beyond anything
  • 00:22:18.020 --> 00:22:23.150
  • that I can comprehend.
  • 00:22:23.160 --> 00:22:26.000
  • And when it comes right down to it,
  • 00:22:26.010 --> 00:22:28.050
  • we have to confess that God simply has
  • 00:22:28.060 --> 00:22:30.160
  • more information than we do.
  • 00:22:30.170 --> 00:22:33.240
  • And we have to trust him with the margins that exist
  • 00:22:33.250 --> 00:22:37.010
  • between our knowledge and his.
  • 00:22:37.020 --> 00:22:41.240
  • We have an all-knowing God, my friends and because
  • 00:22:41.250 --> 00:22:44.190
  • he is omniscient we should be quick to confess our sin,
  • 00:22:44.200 --> 00:22:48.240
  • which he already knows.
  • 00:22:48.250 --> 00:22:51.140
  • We should be quick to enjoy his fellowship because he loves us
  • 00:22:51.150 --> 00:22:57.000
  • even thought he knows everything about us.
  • 00:22:57.010 --> 00:23:00.030
  • We should be quick to bring him our prayers because he knows
  • 00:23:00.040 --> 00:23:04.170
  • beforehand what we need and wants to connect with us
  • 00:23:04.180 --> 00:23:07.290
  • and get us on the same page.
  • 00:23:08.000 --> 00:23:10.080
  • And we should never ever go anywhere else first before,
  • 00:23:10.090 --> 00:23:14.110
  • in times of suffering, we go to the great Shepherd.
  • 00:23:14.120 --> 00:23:19.290
  • And here it is, in one sentence: he knows us all better than
  • 00:23:20.000 --> 00:23:27.070
  • we know ourselves and loves us passionately.
  • 00:23:27.080 --> 00:23:34.230
  • And so much so that he wants to spend eternity
  • 00:23:34.240 --> 00:23:38.090
  • with every one of us.
  • 00:23:38.100 --> 00:23:40.290
  • In the Bible, it says, "And I will come again
  • 00:23:41.000 --> 00:23:43.080
  • and receive you unto myself, that where I am,
  • 00:23:43.090 --> 00:23:46.100
  • there you may be also."
  • 00:23:46.110 --> 00:23:48.120
  • God wants us to be with him forever.
  • 00:23:48.130 --> 00:23:50.190
  • I remember reading someplace that if God had a refrigerator,
  • 00:23:50.200 --> 00:23:53.240
  • your picture would be on the door.
  • 00:23:53.250 --> 00:23:57.040
  • He loves you like that.
  • 00:23:57.050 --> 00:23:59.240
  • And the beauty of it is, we now know that
  • 00:23:59.250 --> 00:24:02.160
  • he isn't loving us because he doesn't know what we're up to.
  • 00:24:02.170 --> 00:24:06.080
  • He loves us in spite of everything.
  • 00:24:06.090 --> 00:24:09.220
  • He loves us as we are and he loves us way too much
  • 00:24:09.230 --> 00:24:13.240
  • to leave us the way that we are.
  • 00:24:13.250 --> 00:24:17.090
  • And that's why we come to church, isn't it?
  • 00:24:17.100 --> 00:24:19.230
  • So we can learn more about him, become more like him,
  • 00:24:19.240 --> 00:24:23.230
  • and enjoy the benefit of being in the forever family.
  • 00:24:23.240 --> 00:24:30.200
  • Let me just say to you today, I know this God.
  • 00:24:30.210 --> 00:24:35.010
  • He's faithful.
  • 00:24:35.020 --> 00:24:36.210
  • In every situation you will ever face,
  • 00:24:36.220 --> 00:24:38.280
  • God is faithful.
  • 00:24:38.290 --> 00:24:41.170
  • And he wants to be faithful to you and if you don't know him
  • 00:24:41.180 --> 00:24:43.270
  • in a personal way, this may seem a little strange to hear
  • 00:24:43.280 --> 00:24:46.120
  • a message like this 'cause if you don't know God,
  • 00:24:46.130 --> 00:24:48.120
  • you don't understand it.
  • 00:24:48.130 --> 00:24:50.140
  • But you know God first by putting your trust in his Son,
  • 00:24:50.150 --> 00:24:53.040
  • Jesus Christ, and there's no better thing you could ever do
  • 00:24:53.050 --> 00:24:56.010
  • than put your trust in Jesus Christ.
  • 00:24:56.020 --> 00:24:58.020
  • male announcer: Dr. Jeremiah will return to close

  • About God to Knowing God," inside which Dr. Jeremiah shares
  • 00:25:14.190 --> 00:25:18.290
  • the powerful characteristics that God himself wants you
  • 00:25:19.000 --> 00:25:22.080
  • to understand.
  • 00:25:22.090 --> 00:25:23.200
  • Dr. Jeremiah's book will be sent to you as a thank you

  • announcer: And now, with one last word
  • 00:25:54.210 --> 00:25:56.090
  • for today's program, here is Dr. Jeremiah.
  • 00:25:56.100 --> 00:25:58.250
  • Dr. Jeremiah: As I learn more about God in my walk with him,
  • 00:26:00.080 --> 00:26:03.220
  • the more I understand that there is so much more I need to know.
  • 00:26:03.230 --> 00:26:08.280
  • If we turn that around, the Bible says:
  • 00:26:09.230 --> 00:26:11.150
  • "God has known everything about us from the moment
  • 00:26:11.160 --> 00:26:14.090
  • of our conception in our mother's womb."
  • 00:26:14.100 --> 00:26:17.230
  • He knows us the way a father knows
  • 00:26:17.240 --> 00:26:20.020
  • each of his unique children.
  • 00:26:20.030 --> 00:26:22.110
  • The most important thing God knows about us is that we need
  • 00:26:22.120 --> 00:26:25.200
  • to be restored to fellowship with him through faith
  • 00:26:25.210 --> 00:26:29.040
  • in his Son.
  • 00:26:29.050 --> 00:26:31.060
  • I would like to send you two free gifts
  • 00:26:31.070 --> 00:26:33.200
  • that will encourage you to take that step.

  • he takes the good and the bad, the mistakes and
  • 00:26:58.230 --> 00:27:01.070
  • all of the things we do right and, in his Sovereign,
  • 00:27:01.080 --> 00:27:04.090
  • he mixes it all together and he puts together in his plan
  • 00:27:04.100 --> 00:27:07.240
  • and according to the Scripture, he makes all things beautiful.
  • 00:27:07.250 --> 00:27:11.250
